Unofficial Preview Changes & Pre-match Discussion - RD 4 vs. Carlton. Thur 03/04 @ 7:30pm (MCG)

Might be a bit to play out with Curnow. See how he plays this week.
He didn’t look ready to play last week, so he either badly needs match practice or might hit the stands again by our match as they are playing him injured.
Third game in against us - Charlie will be up and about.

It’s been 3 games so the equal leading goal kicker is a bit much.

I’m not hating on Membrey, but I definitely prefer CoxMM over MMM. Happy to keep trialing MMM, but I don’t think it should be a “no discussion” policy.

Cameron’s usage will need to be managed during the season and McStay is quite horrible in the ruck.

the F50 set up works because any of Mihocek, Membrey, McStay, Hill or Elliot can kick 4 in a game. Cox can't do that.

I could see if they keep him to double team DeKonning but that wouldn't be at Membrey's expense.

I also like MMM to stretch Weitering. Whoever gets him needs to drag him away from marking contests as much as possible.

You know, we keep saying stuff like this and yet the players never seem to do it

We kick to Gawn
We kick to Weitering
We kick to McGovern
We kick to Taylor

There's nothing surer lol

Every club does that. It all depends how much pressure they are under to dispose of the ball. The other option is to kick it backwards

TDK was immense in Carlton’s last game - DC and Cox would be far more effective against him than DC and McStay.
Why? I think TDK's mobility once it hits the deck actually makes it more troublesome for Cox to play, let alone the fact that Cox would actually be going up against Cripps or someone else (I imagine Voss has to one day see reason there).

TDK has been immense all season and it's been rather meaningless for Carlton's success. I don't think we should worry too much about that area of the game & picking a team to suit it when we'd be better suited elsewhere by keeping more mobile. I don't like the idea of long-bombs to contests with Weitering around.

Players can't really do it because backmen defend positions more than specific players, especially the best KPDs. But having players who can be hit on short leads (ie everyone but Cox) gives us an option there

Agree. Although when it mattered most we changed the angles magnificently and took out the interceptor.

WHE is the only one I've seen really get the interceptors off their game and it's through agility and being able to find dangerous spots - the bigber KPPs not so much - Membrey might be able to do it WHE style.

Our current plan though seems to be 2023 handball chains to run at the defence and get it over the top of the higher up the ground interceptors. At the end of last year, we were entering to a pack with a couple of talls in it on the boundary line to bring it to ground and get stoppages. So theres' a few different options that we go with.

100% this. Look how the Hawks forwards carved through Carlton. A more mobile forward line will cause headaches for them. Put McStay on Weitering to halve the contests and let our smalls go to work.

McGovern will be gassed and useless by the 3rd quarter.

I still feel like many think the game is more complicated than it is

If you see a player in an area, kick it where they're not

It's not that complicated. We have some pretty good kicks down back. I find it incredibly frustrating that we seem to refuse to kick to the open side of the ground where one or two could lead into space.

Yet on the rare occasion we do kick through the middle or the empty side of the ground, it almost always ends in a goal. Funny that.

Players need a free target on the fat side before they can go there. The reason it is rare to make that kick is because it is relatively rare for the opportunity to arise - at least forward of CHB.

Kicking to a contest on the fat side is a good way to give away goals.

Don’t you think that if it was so simple, we’d be doing it?

I always like it when the Pies kick to space going forward.

Kind of lets us get onto it more.

Never like us kicking right into packs.

Think our game style is more for the out on the wings and flank style play.

And the MCG suits us this way.

Like it getting out there into space.

We played like that in 1990 even tho was like 35 years ago but we have the run and speed to chase and run onto the ball.

Hence kick goals.

Dont like this set shot stuff.

Love goals on the run and in general play.

Perfect example was the Cox intercept on the wing turn over then run along and kick out to vacant forward 50.

Kind of what you call out the back type goals

You'd think so. Why on earth would we deliberately want to make life harder for ourselves than it needs to be?

Who thinks its about time and over due too that we beat Carlton by a juicy say 40 points.

Always too close v Blues for mine.

Cant recall the last time it was a purely one sided match.

Love a scoreline at quarter time as Pies 34 to Blues 6

Half time Pies 59 to blues 18

3q time 90 blues 38

Full time Pies 119 blues 52

Something like that and the Pies kick the first 3 goals of the game too in the first 6 mins

I can't quite get the tune.

I can't quite get the tune.
I input it into ChatGPT:

This would work perfectly as the spoken intro to a post-rock or indie rock tune—think The Drones, The War on Drugs, or even something off a Midnight Oil B-side if they’d gone full footy tragic.

But if you want a more chanty, pub-style footy anthem feel, like something The Killers would rip into during a Grand Final set, it could go:

(Mid-tempo, driving beat kicks in)
I always like it... when the Pies kick to space going forward...
We get onto it more... we get onto it more...
None of that pack-stuff grind, no, we want that open door...
(clap clap)
Out on the wings, runnin’ wild and free,
The MCG... yeah it suits our speed...
Like '90 again, chasing it down,
From the flank, to the post, to the scoreboard sound...

(Instrumental builds)
Don’t like the set shot, we want the burst,
Cox with the intercept, make ‘em hurt...
Kicking out to space, goals on the run,
That’s how the Pies get the job done...

Want me to write it out like a full verse/chorus-style footy anthem?
