At least Gibbs was the clear standout player in the scratch match on the weekend, it sounds like from what Nicks said that they were looking for that type of dominant performance before even considering him for selection. He would surely know this is his last chance to save his career, so hopefully that brings out his 2018 form.

Kelly over Butts or Worrell just infuriates me though, it’s so short sighted.

There has not been one new player since McPherson debuted over a month ago, are they seriously telling us none of the youth have performed to a standard where they deserve selections over the likes of Hartigan/Kelly/Knight/Atkins in a rebuild? Seriously?
Outside the most recent draft, it appears the club has drawn a line through most of our rookies.

If you haven't debuted and you were recruited '18 or before you've got little chance of avoiding the cut.

You don't announce a 4 year rebuild if rate your list

So if it’s all about the rebuild who are kids we are actually playing:
Jones
Hamill
McAsey
Moose

McAdam I guess although he’s mature as is Stengle.

That it?
He's 3 years younger than McAdam I think.

And yep if we are to win I want them in the best 5 players.

I've always felt that you need a spread across three broad categories

Those who are good players now
Those who you think will be good players one day
Experienced players who will help the second group develop

The trouble is that we've got a bunch who don't really fit in any of those categories. Instead we have experienced players who have minimal influence on the game or the development of other players. Also players who should be in their prime who haven't come on or have regressed. And young players with question marks over their future quality.
Yep, reckon you're spot on. No doubt they've banked on the Tex, Sloane and Crouch's of the world playing a much more significant role in the development of the up and comers (both in terms of mentoring and leadership, but also doing the heavy lifting on gameday). No question in my mind that it's the main reason we're seeing Jones stagnate a bit this year.

I guess we classify Stengle a kid. Certainly in terms of games - although 4th year in the AFL system.

Shown some signs as a mid actually - not sure his tank will ever allow that though

People saying Poholke shouldn't have come in for Crouch. Crouch plays exactly the role we drafted Poholke for and this would have been one of the few chances to play him in that role. So clearly Myles is cooked at the AFC.

As for bringing in Kelly...
Yeah good call forgot about Myles.

Seems like it.

Plays well as a mid/forward, then gets dropped when we play him as a forward

I thought that last week, he's just so evasive and uses it well.

Probably compliments the more defensive minded Keays in there too.

Can everyone stop criticising Gibbs selection, I know his recent form has not been good but give him another chance. I mean yes we are rebuilding but we've blooded so many young players this year and probably will continue to have a few more debutants this year.

I say reserve your judgement on him until after tomorrow's game and if he plays poorly than fair enough he shouldn't be rewarded any more games but if he has a good game what will you all say then?

How many shit games does one bloke get?

I would say 80% of the crows squad won’t play in their next premiership. So we get rid of them now. These experience players over the next 3 years would do the ground work of developing the younger players.

Yeah because we saw at Carlton how excellent Gibbs was at support junior play development. Really paid dividends for them over there didn't it.

Maybe wait for the final 22 unless people have been given the team sheet already?

I just hope Gibbs is coming in to play on ball not as a Doedee replacement down back.

The talk was that when they interviewed him, they loved Nicks vision for the club. IIRC he understood that his job was to bring through a new group of players. I would love to know if we are still on plan, or if everything that he sold us on has now been thrown out of the window. I was never a fan of Nicks. Did not excite me in the slightest. But given we made the call, the club should be making it clear to him that his job doesn't depend on how many wins he gets, but how he improves the list.

Credit him for those names. But I feel like something is wrong when he thinks getting a couple of wins on the board is more important than extending that list of games into young players. Something is massively wrong.

I do wonder if we need to assess selection over the 4 week block.

I have no idea if they have strategised it that way, but it seems like something that needs to be done given the closeness of the matches.

But I will be interested in his performance, the comments about him from the coaches have been cryptic at best, hopefully he has resolved what ever issues he had.
A fully fit and focused Bryce Gibbs can be a big bonus for us and I hardly think his selection is going to stop us from playing the kids, will be good to have experience to guide our youth. Hoping he can perform this time

Purely based on age. Gibbs, as a 31 year old, is literally zero chance of being in our next finals team. Same with Mackay. Zero chance of being around in 3-4 years.

Atkins, Knight and Poholke are still a chance. Sure, an outside chance and I think all three will be moved on. But a non-zero chance. Outside of that, players like Atkins have genuine trade value.

That's why I'd have Gibbs and Mackay as some of the very last players I would have picked this year
Are you saying we will be making finals with our list in 3 to 4 years

You are dellussioal

Yeah - I mean we all need to be aware that it’s a compressed season, short breaks, hard on young bodies.

But you can get set they we get almost a full season into DMac which is disgraceful given we have Sholl

I think the club is desperate for a win, and I mean to an extent I am too. I dont want a winless season...... but we can still beat North playing a whole bunch of hungry kids

We will get a win when we are good enough to win. It's disappointing we are deviating from and compromising the strategy to force a win, rather than letting it happen through development and genuine improvement.

Playing guys like Gibbs and Mackay to win isn't that much of a win. I certainly wouldn't be impressed if the win was driven by players I expect to be delisted, rather than strong performances from youth. Is that sort of win worth having? Or is it just papering over some cracks?

A winless season will damage our reputation but it's not like our club's reputation could be damaged any further than it has been

Oh come on, you are ignoring the good footy he played for us in 2018 and in 2019 he had reported personal issues and lets face it the coaching staff last year didn't help him. The way I see it in 2018 he was able to play his natural position as Brad Crouch was out for the season and he excelled finishing 4th in the b&f.

Then comes 2019 and Brad Crouch is back and the coaching staff were trying to turn him into a different type of player which didn't help, they were expecting him to change his game style. I think Gibbs has been a victim of having too many of the same types as him.

Well put.

The question you could also ask is to what extent our reputation is enhanced by going from 0-17 to 1-16, particularly when that 1 win was gained at the expense of young players

Surely Worrell is the Doedee replacement... & not Kelly. We need to try him during the compressed period & allows us to mix it up forward/back with McAsey.

Just need to get games into our young talent.
