Let the melts begin..

Sensible selection to replace Crouch but if he fails to perform that's it, stamp his papers, it's over.
I suppose MacKay is still in. Ok with Gibbs but why are we not trying the kids. Maybe Nicks feels there is a chance for finals still.

I'm no fan of the Gibbs we have but the melts are ridiculous. Seems like people want to excuse our young players for being terrible cos no seniors around them then melt when we swap a senior for a senior to try to give them that support.

So with Gibbs in, Kelly likely back for Doedee, and both Atkins and Knight in the mix, let's check in on the list of available senior players who aren't being considered this week:

Why would we want to swap a terrible senior player who provides no support for another terrible senior player who provides no support?

I think it is important that we try to win this game - and pick our best available team accordingly... but not for the reasons we saw in previous years.

In 2018 & 2019, it was a case of "get one win, the players will regain confidence and we'll win more - enough to make the finals". That was a complete failure, which resulted in picking our oldest team week-in-week-out, regardless of how poorly they were performing.

In 2020 it's about getting a win, to minimise the psychological scarring & damage being done to our youngsters by losing week-in-week-out. This is about winning a game for the psychological wellbeing of our players, particularly the youngsters.

Winning this game won't cost us pick #1, and in all likelihood it's our last winnable game for the season. There is no downside to winning this week, and significant downside to losing.

I'm not sure picking more and more experienced players accomplishes that goal. I feel we'd be more likely to win if guys like Gibbs and Kelly weren't selected.

Gibbs replaces Brouch, Kelly replaces Doedee. Both outs are due to injury. It is highly unlikely that we'll see any other changes when the team is named tonight. They're not dropping young kids to make way for these senior players, they're replacing injured players who simply weren't available.

I have to say, this is genuinely some of your best work.

So? I think we are more likely to win with someone other than Kelly in Doedee's position, for example

We're trying McAsey, Jones, O'Brien, Hamill, Himmelberg, McPherson, Stengle still. Hopefully don't drop any more kids to be replaced by senior players.

Other than paying out a lot of contracts, are we actually doing anything different this year? Really starting to feel like a rinse and repeat, except with a cheaper coaching group.

It's difficult to know whether we are playing kids because we genuinely want to, or because we are forced to based on our list profile and injuries

Bring them all in Matty!

The man just looks so far out of his depth, he’s now starting to tie his own noose and he’s oblivious to it, despite it being head shake worthy there’s a slight morbid fascination watching his desperation starting to take hold. It’s car crash television.

I don't disagree. It's no coincidence that our ball movement last week was the best it's been all season - without Kelly's momentum killing possessions.

However, the selectors clearly disagree, given that Sholl has rarely even been named on the emergency list. They obviously don't think he's ready and/or good enough for AFL.

Which developing youngster should they be picking ahead of Gibbs? Please don't say Poholke...

Schoenberg has rarely (if ever) made the emergency list. He's a first year draftee, and they obviously don't think he's ready for AFL selection yet.

Other than Schoenberg, the options are ....

We need another paper stamping game?

Sigh. What a shitshow.

I would pick every other player on the list ahead of Bryce Gibbs, even Rory Atkins and Riley Knight, with the exception of Patrick Wilson and Ayce Taylor

"try" is probably the best word there. The problem is we know Gibbs is cooked. He's had about 4-5 games in the last 18 months which should have seen his papers stamped.

If you're going to select seniors to support kids, they actually need to be capable of that. Gibbs isn't and therefore, this is a complete waste of time.

Atkins/Knight/Gibbs/Poholke - it's all just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. None of them should (or probably will) be on our list in 2021, so what difference does it make if they go with Gibbs rather than the other three? We're talking about choosing between one 2/10 player, or another 2/10 player, or another 2/10 player. None of them will make the team better, and none of them are any better than their peers within this group.
