Strategy Changes: Round 3 West Coast Eagles vs. Fremantle Dockers

Speaking of Erasmus, there was a few mistakes today but he did at least 2-3 things I’ve never seen Worner do.

Young and Fyfe are out. Give him a go until they return at the very least. I’d even try him in Banfield’s role with midfield stints if no smalls return by then.
Had a pretty reasonable game but I would have liked to see him kick that goal. I didn't think he made any more mistakes than anyone else though. Letting Sheldrick run off him so easily which resulted in that goal was the one major error though

His kick inside fifty to Voss should’ve meant the game was over. Thought that moment was quite classy for someone that’s supposed to have poor skills.

Eagles looked pretty good today.
They’ll be tired after the flight, heat and humidity but I’d say they’ll give us. Good run and won’t be surprised if they beat us.

Could be a long week ahead if we don’t win this well, which I’m tipping is what will happen.

I only just finished watching the game and watching Voss go back for a set shot from 35 out on an angle was just hilarious. He had an opportunity to just step inside and kick on the run. The Guy doesn’t even consider other options thinking his goal kicking is Pavlich like.

If Frederick can’t kick a goal from 30 out right in front why is he in the team?

People think that our list is great. We’ve got a good best 10 then it really drops away.

We miss Hayden Young immensely.

I think our top ten players this season so far differs quite significantly from what you’d consider the top ten players on paper we had out there today.

Our good players outside of 4-5 are just as much of the problem.

No one has JOM, Johnson and NOD in that bracket but they’re all probably been in our top ten players so far. They’re the types we needed to improve but we’ve had others go backwards. FWIW I don’t think any of our players so far have been elite so far.

I think I’d go with Sharp if we wanted to send a message tbh. Might just need to wait for Young and Fyfe (allowing JOM to go back to the wing) to return to do it though.

Think Sharp has a future if he can learn to lower his eyes a bit but his inside 50s were as much to blame for us losing than Cox’s one defensive effort.
Sharp has gone backwards.
Same with Clarke.
These guys were shining when they first arrived.
Amiss is floundering after a stunning start to a career.
What has happened ??

I remember the first game Clark played for us he had about 700m gained and lead the ground in both rebounds and i50s. He was running all day.

Today every time he marked it he waited his full measure before kicking it. He has speed and never backs himself in to use it anymore. It’s been coached out.

To get where we needed to go after 2022 Clark needed to push on to AA. Cox needed to push to AA level. Freddy needed to get towards AA squad level. Similarly chappy. None of that has happened.

Young has improved. Serong has albeit poor start to this season, Treacy has taken his game to the next level. But those improvements aren't even covering regression in other areas.

Id love to see Cox out. Send a message. Effort is a non negotiable.

Sharp out. Send a message we value method.

Let aish play fatside winger. At least he lowers his eyes.

Id play O'Driscoll at HB. He played decent but we need some run, carry and dare off half back goodness knows we arent getting any from Ryan or Clark

I want to keep Ras in, and push him on two way running, tackling and see how he goes.

Needs time in the team to pick up the pace of the game, then his strengths will come to the fore.

We do need a big body to replace Fyfe long term, and Ras was solid enough with the ball to suggest he’s worth persisting with this season.

I just want Banners to succeed because he is a ripping bloke, but he just lets us down in the big moments.

Aish to replace Walker but as sub, Fyfe for Banners with Bolton to spend more time forward.

Tell him to be front and centre all day.

In- Brodie, Simpson, Narkle, Worner
Out- Walker, Erasmus, Bainfield, Fredrick

B- Ryan Draper Cox
HB- Clarke Pearce Wagner
C- Brayshaw Brodie Sharp
HF- Bolton Treacy Reid
F- Voss Amiss Simpson
FOLL- Jackson O’Driscoll Serong
I/C- Chapman, O’Meara, Johnson, Worner
Sub- Narkle

It shouldn't surprise anyone that the key ball movers, which Clark and Sharp were, during our wins get clamped down on when sides start taking us seriously.

Same reason Amiss has his space blocked in front instead of back shoulder.

Same reason Serong is closely tagged.

Same reason the likes of Erasmus find the guy on the mark rush back to be outside the five so he kicks long.

Same reasons.

It's why I want us taking contested marks and winning clearances, it's the most controllable part of the game and the hardest to work out.

Everyone tries to take contested marks and win clearances though? unless youre suggesting always sending an extra to the stoppage and the oppo having a spare a kick down the line. Which adds to one but takes away from the other.

The most controllable part of the game is game style and method. A good game plan should be hard to negate and have layers to it. Ours does not.

The problem is clark and sharp are our key ball movers. Or at least meant to be. Neither are elite with disposal. Clark is a decent long kick but isnt creative. Sharp had 4 i50 entries after relatively little pressure late on in the game and nothing came of them.

Narkle, Fyfe and Aish to come in. If Fyfe isn’t ready Brodie.

That Harley **** will try run riot and bully us again. Need to be on standby.

Voss needs to go back and work on skills. Walker out and Banners out.

Aish to play back, Narkle to be injected in the fwd line and Fyfe as Sub.

If we feel like we are a bit short in the fwd line with Voss coming out..we can always swing Draper there who started sub rd 2.

This team needs to have strength injected around the contest. Brayshaw/Serong are too much of the same player in the midfield and have been bullied yet again.

We could definitely use two of our three most important players coming back in Young and Darcy.

Do we rely on key players too much? Yes.

But we also relied on the likes of Frederick kicking one of his two shots at goal. On Voss kicking more than one goal out of five shots at goal. On Banfield taking a mark instead of it going through his legs. Erasmus kicking a set shot in front. None of them are our stars.

Amiss could have tapped the ball onto Bolton to dance in for a goal instead of taking possession and being tackled.

Our system and "layers" gave us a lot of looks at goal. Any of the above goes slightly more our way and we are talking about how we beat a side that has thumped us at home for years in a character defining slog.

Fyfe has to play. Just him being there as sub gives the team more experience and inspiration. I think Fyfe is more inspiring than Moose and JL combined. Get him in the side and hopefully he will get them across the line.

If our spread is on top, if we are covering opposition running through the corridor from the midfield and half back line, then Fyfe in will be good.

But if we are seeing opposition players run through the middle on us now, before adding in another who can't/won't be able to chase it won't tip the scale.

Unless that player also pushes so much in the other direction that the ball lives in our forward fifty.

Is 2025 Nathan Fyfe able to play as 2015 Nathan Fyfe off an interrupted preseason?

I'd rather play Hayden Young

Fyfe and Walters will retire. Who would want to go out like this?
