Player Watch Charlie Dean

I said it 2 years ago and I’ll say it again now. This kid will leave no stone unturned to make it. His attitude is exceptional. Loved his interview and great to see how much murph has been teaching him his role. Says a lot about Murph and his character. If Murph does decide to retire I reckon he will have a career at clubland, in a coaching or similar role.

And then still saying that Frampton didn't do much wrong and will certainly be picked ahead of him.

Not a lot of belief that Dean had clearly put himself ahead of Frampton with his performance.

That's what "head and shoulders better than Frampton" means.
I think that Frampton will get first crack purely based on the fact that Dean has been out for so long and they want to set him up to succeed rather than throw him in to the deep end.
Having said that, if he keeps putting up performances like that in the VFL he’ll surpass Frampton in quick time, because as you said, he’s much much better with ball in hand, and in my opinion, has a far better game awareness too.

Thought he was really solid when given the opportunity. If he ends up being the equivalent to Sam Collins (similar VFL pathways although Collins was at an AFL club from memory before Werribee) then we’ll be in front.
He's going to play quite a few games this year. He just has that aura about him.

Howdy folks, just wondering about this fella. Thought he played well the other night then was browsing through his stats and saw 12 touches, 8 marks in just 37% ToG.
How far off a game is he? Literally had never heard of him until this game

He was the winner of the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal prior to joining the Pies.

He's had 2 years of foot injuries since arriving at the club in 21.

Played well in the last 3 VFL games last year, particularly considering he'd not played for 2 years.

We're all hopeful he is over his feet problems & can fulfil his potential. Depending on what happens with Murphy, he may get his chance early on.

Had a career threatening foot injury the past 2 years, I think they'll be conservative with him and build up his match fitness in the VFL over the first month.

KPD usually need to play 90% of game time so theres still question marks over his match fitness

If Murphy retires Dean should wear number 28 in honour of Murphy

Loved his performance the other night, but I agree with people that he needs more than a month of solid and injury free football in the reverses. Would be insane to debut him in the opening round considering how little he’s played these last 2 seasons. Looks like a player though.

Or do we play him because he actually is injury free.

He is a mature age player? Should be ready to go?

I’m not convinced he needs month in the VFL to be in the frame of selection. It took Murphy all of one game in the VFL to get back into the side after struggling with injuries for a few years.

Frampton's one advantage is versatility. I think he'll become our band-aid to play wherever as Dean eventually locks down a role. We'll likely need another ruck at some stage this year and I'd have Frampton in over Steene. Aiden Begg is unlikely to play AFL this year.

Hard disagree. Frampton was just adequate as a relief ruck when we literally had nobody else. I fully expect Begg or Steene to be given a crack as second ruck if we require it at some stage this year now they have some extra development in them.

Begg will be our last resort. His tank is minimal and he struggles against VFL-standard rucks. Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in form, he is first chop. Steene still has a young body.

Apologies for repeating myself here but as I keep saying, people very easily forget that Dean was touted as the best defender in the VFL when we grabbed him.

We clearly had him earmarked as a long term pillar of the defensive structure and I'm not sure why that would change once his body gets the all clear.

Given his performance against AFL opposition the other night, as long as his body holds up I suspect he'll be in the seniors sooner rather than later.

I like Frampton's versatility...a lot. But purely as a defender, I'm taking Dean.

I personally want to see Frampton basically as a permanent sub all things being equal. He's just perfect for the role simply because you can play him in any key post including ruck.

If Dean can play full back , I'd like to see Frampton get an opportunity to play Howe's role as intercepting 3rd tall.
While Billy is tall and strong and should in theory be a KPB, I think hes actually better suited to coming over the top for a mark or spoil rather than being the guy who gets body on body and reads the play.
If Murph comes back, I could see a world where both he and Dean play.
I dont think Howe will be a lock all year, either through injury or form.

He can kick on the run. Good running goal against the Suns last year, seen brief moments of it at other times.

Tend to agree regarding the Howe comments. I love Jezza but I was surprised he got a two year extension when he did. I think his best is behind him and he will be pushed more and more from emerging talent starting this year...

I thought one of Dean’s strengths in the VFL prior to joining Collingwood was as an intercepting backman.

I could be wrong though…

I don’t you’ve been paying attention with Begg recently tbh.

It seems like you’re in furious agreement with me here, because the bolded is pretty much exactly what I was saying in the post you quoted.
