This young fella with the big frizzy hair got me really excited.

He goes hard at the ball, chases and tackles and can kick a goal when needed :thumbsu:

Also loved his hard running and smooth ball skills.

Wish we had guns like this at the Saints :p

Personally i would like to see in the midfield all game. I could just see him blaze away at centre bounces kicking the ball to pav on the lead. His speed is just incrediable.

There's a big plus side to his game. He has a contagious energy about him. He'll be selected for effort alone, I'd love to see him work on his composure when taking set shots though. I can't watch when this kid kicks for goal from a set shot. On the run or if he plays on he seems to have no dramas. It's when he has too much time to think about it.

He certainly runs his heart out putting pressure on the ball coming back out. Not sure if he'll make the leap to consistant goal kicker, but certainly does more than enough to earn a spot in the team.

Was fantastic again on the weekend. The thing I love best about him is his defensive pressure. He really tries to harass the opposition like Farmer at his best. And he's quick.

Really, this gives me a lot to be optimistic about. If we can get Mayne at pick 40, then we could (with luck) pick up another 1-2 quality players in this year's draft. Things could be turning around for Freo sooner rather than later. :thumbsu:

If Mayne continues with his good form, you would expect him to receive a Rising Star nomination before the season is finished. Not a bad return to collect three in a year, given we apparently have no young talent coming through and haven't had a nomination since Mundy in 2005.

If his performance against Essendon is any indication of his form thus far he definately deserves a nod sooner rather than later.

the fact he's usually getting the ball just beyond half forward means we perhaps don't get to chance to see what he can do in a bit of space - he seems to ahve the chutzpah to really take guys on and have a few bounces a la your ryan griffen or jason gram, and unlike a brett peake he has the poise (and skill) to do something useful with it after having a run.. he's almost like a bigger version of dale thomas - without the ego it seems.

I have become a huge Chopper fan. He looks the goods, one of the things I like about him is that he makes every mark and loose ball a contest and goes in hard. He could be a super star.

He could be even quicker if someone coached him on how to run. Bloody arms and legs flying everywhere and his head rocking around getting ready to fall off. (Could be a job for "Chops-a-Must"). Top player though, would be interesting to have Campbell in the forward line with him, two players who are very hard at the contest.

Mayne is still a nobody to the media set here in Victoria. But I think he is probably the draft pick up of the season.

I am not saying he is necessarily better than Palmer (who I think will get the rookie of the year award) but I think when you consider that Mayne was taken at pick 40, FFC clearly got their draft recruitment right this time around.

I think the fact that a player with Mayne's quality and intensity can be picked up at pick 40 just shows how futile tanking efforts can be.

No doubt there are some supporters at your club that advocate "tanking". But I think Freo would really struggle with the pressure of the number 1 pick. I mean when you consider that you guys got the Pav at No. 4 it just shows you that you dont need the number 1 pick in order to get a top quality player.

Well done FFC on the Mayne pick up.

Having said that, I think you guys should consider cashing in your David Mundy chips at the end of the year. You would probably get a first round pick IMO.

i think the crazy thing about someone like chris mayne is that you see all the joy, enthusiasm and courage he brings into every game and wonder - why the heck don't they all play like he does?

Some good point you make there checkers :thumbsu::thumbsu:
Absolutely agree with the tanking thing. Unfortuately, like any club, we have those that lack honour and want to Fremantle FC to tank , but I'd rather always play for the win.
We don't need to tnak anyways... we are at least guareenteed a top ten pick now anyways....
I happen to agree with you in regards to if Fremantle landed the first pick, and with our sometimes sketchy past trading record we would come under enormous scrutiny..
..and if the football media love on thiung it is to go after Fremantle FC as we all know..

Can't talk about the others, but I LOVE Chopper's enthusiasm..for anything really. He's always in there for big team hugs, getting sandwiched between Pav and Taz (!), and giving a mate a pat on the butt.
Hopefully he will win the Best Clubman award at the B&F later this year.
( I realise that in saying that it is almost a kiss of death as other recipients of this award tend not to fare well in the future!).

Got to agree. It wouldn't matter who we picked it would be known as the "freo draft blunder", inspite of drafts where Collingwood picked Fraiser above Pav and Hase :)

I know Matt Barber has been trying to get access to him at Perth, because no-one is teaching him how to run at Freo. Runs 11 flat for a hundred AFAIK, and with better technique would regularly run 10s, but is the fastest at Freo over 100 AFAIK.

Runs with his arms across his body, which is the mayne problem. Very easy to fix, partly with upper back strength - easy to work in with variations on the lat pull down machine.

I thought Thomas was actually quite tall, and Mayne actually looks like he is going to be more than handy size wise. Maybe not key position size, but with flair and pace he brings a pretty handy dimension to our forward line.
Mayne is the perfect 3rd tall/ option. Perfect foil for Tarrant and Pav. Plays much taller than what he is. :thumbsu:

Personally i'd perfer to develop Mayne as a half forward. An O'Keefe or Murphy type player rather than a midfielder. Quality players like these two are rare and invalueable:thumbsu:
I don't understand what the obsession is with turning him into a midfielder. O'Keefe is exactly what he should be modelled on. Thought that a few weeks back.

If you turn him into a mid, you take away his best asset, his speed. People don't seem to understand that. It's the whole juniour coach attitude, "Oh you can run real fast... go in the middle." Genetics and muscle dynamics doesn't work like that. Dumb.

Not bad for pick 40, inni?

Chopper will be an elite forward in 3 years time.
Played very well against us. I was very impressed.

Good point about him being a good pick up at no. 40. Just shows that there is quality in all rounds of the draft and that good recruiters are vital to a club. We got Houli and Reimers in the 40's also. Drafts look much better when you pick up that bargain late in the draft. Believe that Lonergan went in the 50's in 2005.

Like the look of Mayne.

Let's hope Freo keep him away from Perth then.
