Injury Christian Petracca's injury - A disgrace he was allowed to come back on the field

I dunno, docs can only make calls off the symptoms that are being reported and rib injuries are pretty common in the AFL with the vast majority of players just playing out the game after a jab

It was the players call and based off the info available at the time the doctors had no reason to drag him

Medical facilities must be improved at the MCG for immediate diagnosis.
If we are going to go that route every ground that is used for AFL games should have similar equipment would also need a standard of what is getting checked as well

Are we scanning after every big hit or pain symptoms?

Not the first player to play on with similar injuries. Mason Cox last year. And a long time ago Jeff White played on for a quarter with a ruptured spleen. It’s far from ideal but not really diagnosable. Probably more on the player for saying he can go on. But I do see the argument that the decision should be taken away from the player. Again. How much can the doc know without scans.

It's not. Hindsight makes everything easy. Guarantee a big part of him going back on the ground was then asking Pettracca about how he felt and him saying he was good to go back out there.

My opinion is he was showing too much severe pain so long after the event for it to not have been somewhat serious. I am absolutely no doctor and maybe pain reactions vary etc etc just from past incidents it made me think of Rockliff punctured lung more than the usual broken rib reactions I have seen

So the argument against Melbourne medico negligence is that they’ve been negligent for twenty years? ;)

After given pain relief. The guy has four broken ribs, a punctured lung and lacerated spleen. Like they wouldn't have known the extent of his injury after he was given the all clear to come back on the field. Win at all costs is all clubs care about and not the players well being.

A disgrace.
And you base this statement on what? You've spoken to Petracca and the Melbourne medicos and been given a full run down of all the facts, have you?

I think it’s just one of those things that’s an easy call to make in hindsight it’s obviously not ideal but if pain is the only symptom that the doctors have to go off it can literally be any number of things and most of them fine to continue playing under

The vast majority of similar incidents turn out to be non story’s so no point jumping up and down when these isolated incidents occur

As others have mentioned Mason Cox had a similar injury last year and played through it… they didn’t even pick up on the injury for a few days after the fact

Does any stadium have an x-ray machine suitable for that diagnosis?
No they don't, but medical facilities on site must be improved. Petracca's injury and severity is not common despite the amount of collisions per game, but the players must be protected as much as possible. Gone are the days when a player says to the Doc " She'll be right mate".

If the equipment is there...yes!
I dunno
Just don’t really see it as practical for a small handful of incidents

Would need multiple machines (mri, x-ray and ultrasound if we want to get complete and accurate diagnosis to begin with) radiology staff to operate and also report what the images are saying

I think the current system is fine with club doctors and medical staff on site to make general assessments/ treatment and if something seems worse they have paramedics and ambulance’s on site

They can't even get goal line cameras working

AFL needs to stop being so tight and provide MRI/Ultrasound/X Ray machines at all stadiums, like what happens at NFL in USA
Probably worth baring in mind that the NFL is a ~AUD$28 billion industry, compared to the AFL which is a ~AUD$1 billion industry. They're on different scales.

This is a bit of an after the event/benefit of hindsight thread
They wouldn't have known at the time the extent of the injury and may have thought he could run it out
Nobody could have predicted the actual injuries but every single person watching - and playing - knew that Trac shouldn't have been out there.
