You expect to break contracts without paying them out?

You want to talk about values, virtue, honour or loyalty well we gave the lad a start. we gave the lad support, we gave him the honour to coach HFC and loyalty for 17 years. NOT ONCE did we not give him everything he wanted.

clarko could show some LOYALTY and support Sammy in some way perhaps show some high moral standards by still being in the background but then again who knows mitch might have said NO so this could all be a moot point i guess.

I love how so many of the responses are questioning the validity of the names as coaches or comparing/reaching to compare with other coaches.. It's a great stat, people still can't appreciate it for that!

Wait a second, the club agrees to a full pay out and then after the fact changes its mind when they actually look at what that entails. And it is Clarko's (read Manager) fault for making them stick to the agreement.....really? I'm actually quite impressed with Clarkson's Manager he is making sure his Client is getting maximum return. Although unfortunately at Hawthorn's expense, club needs to learn from its mistakes in contract negotiation and cancellation.

Always amazes me why clubs still insist on giving coaches these big multi year deals.

Every single time it ends in a s..t show and costs the club millions of $.

Even for a legend like Clarko I just can't see why you would give more than a 2 to 3 year deal with performance based triggers for subsequent years.

You would think as we become more professional it was catch up, but it’s almost gone in the other direction.

Yeh I think you are on the money.

Imagine how much cleaner it would be if a club stated "we are giving coach X a 2 year initial contract. If he meets our performance criteria at the end of the 2 years he will get an automatic extension otherwise the board will review his contract."

Instead of "we are giving coach X 5 years purely on hope and we will more than likely sack him after 3 to 4 years costing the club a couple of mill"
