Interesting. Rail might be more efficient, but how many people are just going to drive instead?

Presumably they've crunched the numbers on X amount of cars vs plane travel over those routes..

I've seen it first hand in Germany with the company i work for.
Its really easy to fly into Frankfurt, and catch a high speed train , first class is not expensive, you get internet and a small table in front of your seat.
But....no the company constantly travel over 100km by taxi to the airport. Status you see.

Somehow they need to convince people that trains are better.
If you can get the business class on board you achieve it.

Paris to Lyon is 500km.
By car that's a fair hike.
By Plane, its park your car and half hour, then half hour in the air, then land and frig about and get transport to where you're going.
High speed rail 2 hours.

Rail is one of the most carbon efficient means of moving people. ( In France its just about all Nuclear ).
Even Diesel trains are just incredibly more carbon efficient than Aircraft.

Trains just don't offer the flexibility of other transport. Wish they did or the world went balls deep on rail centuries ago to build tracks to allow for two way travel, etc.

You can go pretty much everywhere in Europe.
In Australia we have less rail than we had in the past.
Passenger jets aren't that flexible. You can only fly from an airport to an airport.

Planes could leave at any time and it doesn't matter if there's another plane coming on the reverse trip, but good to hear how it works in Europe. Everywhere should be like that.

I know the UK has also less rail than before.

People would always take the most convenient choice or the cheapest ( Carbon tax)?

A 150 minute train trip from Melbourne CBD to Sydney CBD would be pretty damn convenient.
9 hours 20 minutes by car and add some charging time if you go by electric car.

Aircraft may be slightly more convenient than trains, just as petrol cars are more convenient than electric cars.
No-one has even a model of low carbon aircraft that they are talking about.
Derigible airship anyone?

Another Oz invention
Better storage capacity than Li ion batteries. Some developments with this battery near Pt Augusta, although smaller than world wide developments of same battery.
Also a better option for storage from wind turbines.

So why are Australian states throwing money at Elon? ( Who developed "lightweight" batteries ).

South Australia has been effectively powered by green energy for a week, with one expert predicting it could extend to a month by early next year.

Key points:

Renewable energy exceeded SA's energy needs for a week
It's understood to be a world-first achievement for a jurisdiction of its size
An expert says the state could be powered using green energy for a month by next year
From December 12 to 19, National Energy Market data showed wind and solar contributed on average 103.5 per cent towards the state's energy demand.

No coal was used during the period, but gas accounted for 5.9 per cent of electricity when renewable sources were not enough to power the state at points at night.

The state's connection to the national electricity grid saw it import three per cent of its net energy demand.

The average cost of a megawatt hour dropped to -$26.35.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said it was a significant step.

That has never occurred ever before in the history of the country," Mr Malinauskas said.

"We understand that it's also a world-first for an entire jurisdiction to have all of its energy needs met across a seven-day period exclusively by renewables," he said.

I don't know or care about what an Andrew Tate is, but it sucks that he's proof that the upcoming generation of people, mostly the male ones, aren't getting any better at a lot of things than the last one, if stains like that end up with a platform.

I mean there's a difference between being a influencer by being lucky enough to be born good looking and wealthy enough to just be able to live off Instagram posts and free stuff from companies, and then being an influence by preaching misogyny and other awful things.

Short range/ local travel EVs in Oz:

Long range EVs currently or near available:

China becoming dominant.
Personally I would wait for the BYD Atto4 (Seal)- long range version.

Due to the war in Ukraine at least one LNG tanker has arrived in Europe from Australia.

I wondered how much LNG (>90% methane) was on that ship, and what profit the oil and gas cartel were making. And how much CO2 would be generated.
What numbers do I need?
1. Volume of LNG transported on the European shipment:
174,000 cubic metres
2. Temperature of storage of LNG:
-163.5C
3. Density of LNG at -163.5C:
426kg per cubic metre (about 43% of the density of room temp water)
4. Because LNG is sold by its energy capacity in gigaJoules (10^9 Joules):
16grams LNG yields 890kJ of energy
(1kJ is10^3 Joules and converting kJ to GJ implies dividing kJ by 10^6)
5. CO2 emissions:
16grams of LNG yields 44grams of CO2

So, on that LNG tanker, using that data:
Weight of LNG: 74,124 tonnes
Energy content of that weight: 4.123mill GJ
CO2 emissions: 203,800 tonnes

Now lets get down to money making. The spot price of LNG is through the roof. Transactions are in $US, and I will assume:
Spot price: $US25 per GJ
Cost of production: $US6 per GJ
Profit: $US19 per GJ
Total profit on shipment of 4.123mill GJ:
$US78.3mill

Note that oil and gas cartel use antiquated energy units of mmBTU = 1.055GJ
Note that for transport within Asia about 6% is lost in off gases, often used to help power the ship. More will be lost in transit to Europe.
Note for simplicity I have assumed LNG is 100% methane - approximately correct

This can not be an actual person. Surely the whole thing is acting.

No, he’s real and he’s influential and he’s dangerous.
