Probably not. With more than a handful of draft picks, we need to make a fair bit of space. But Garthwaite is serviceable. I won't melt if we keep him.

I think Garth is quite a different player to Astbury. Maybe he only gets compared to Astbury because he lacks attacking flair, and is blonde. His not as tall or strong. He is a much better runner. Different strengths and different weaknesses. Probably a better fit for the Broad or Valstuin positions - and his a loooong way back for those. The fact his been depth for Dave says a lot about our faith in the depth of KPDs.

With everyone available, my back 7 would probably be something like:

Balta, Grimes, Broad
Short, Vlas, Rioli (Stack)
Personally I think Mansell has done enough to make that back 7

Get ready for a few more retirees end of the year or early next. With injuries and tired bodies, with three premiership medals under their belt and Dave retiring I’d be looking at Edwards, jack, cotchin———young families, commitments etc.

outside of that grimes might be a surprise at some point.

Astbury’s decision did not turn Grimes’ head towards the idea of retirement yet.

“I have got a few more years left yet hopefully. If the body holds up I have certainly got a few more years in me,” Grimes said.

His been great, huh. One of the highlights of the season. Who goes out to make way? Rioli, Stack or Short?
You need a couple on the bench.. but I think Short to the wing might be good use of his attributes. Nank drops back and intercept marks well. Chol to a lesser degree. Now, hopefully, CJ when he's rucking.

I'd take him over Rioli, but option would be there to move Short or him to a wing.

I reckon Short would be a natural winger for most teams, but it'd take a change in the match committee's philosophy for it to work for us. We've been valuing hardness in our wingers over all other attributes, I reckon. KMac, Pickett and Caddy just don't let the ball pass them. They're good defensively in the air and on the ground. Things like kicking efficiency have just been secondary to hardness for our wingers. Whether punters like us agree with the philosophy or not, it's part of a premiership winning philosophy.

Doesn't mean Shorty to the wing can't happen. The match committee clearly have to change a fair bit on what we've done this season. And I agree it'd be a good use of his natural advantages.

The premiership game plan has disappeared off the face of the earth. Flushed deep down the sewage system at AFL house. I think we need to rethink every position on the field. I don't know if chaos kings like Kmac or George have a place.

Kmac , George and Aarts If we want to go forward need to be replaced in the side.

Game plans all get worked out in the end.

I'm working on the theory that our best players were so ****ing good at what they did that they were worth more than one player. Rance, Cotch, Riewoldt - all impacted like they were 2 players. Dusty even more so.

Maybe that allowed us some liberties.

Maybe we could afford to set our defensive press further forward and more aggressively because Rance could beat two opponents if the ball got over the back.

Maybe we could afford to play "transition mids" and pressure specialists because Cotchin could break even against all comers in the clinches.

Maybe we could afford to play chaos small forwards because Riewoldt could always bring the ball to ground, no matter how many he was jumping against.

Then those players age, get injured, get tired and just can't deliver the super-human effort any more... And it all turns to custard.

Well we/ the players are making the calls and beginning to pass the torch. This will transition us to our next era.

Houli and Astbury so far, the question is will any more follow in 2021 or will the bulk of the next group (Riewoldt, Cotchin, Edwards) call it at the end of 2022?

I just checked clearance stats by team, on the AFL website. We are just about last in every clearance sub category. In 2021, I think we might see a different game plan centred around clearance winners.
Until "STAND" no rule change affected us. This seems to be our kryptonite
oops 2022

Reckon that rule is overplayed a bit. Go through our midfield, where clearances emanate from and every one of them had an average to poor season in regard to what they can do.

Dusty never really hit his straps consistently. Cotchin had to shoulder to much, also carried injuries. Edwards and Prestia were injured. Nank and Soldo injured, Nank has carried his still after coming back. Lambert was injured for a fair period.

Jack Graham tried but is not quiet there yet. Bolton was a little disappointing, but young and fair enough. Baker came on as a utility but couldn't keep going. RCD showed a bit, as did Parker. Ross failed to come on as anticipated.

Absolutely cruelled by injury and form and really relyed on a patchwork of young and old. Not a bad effort considering we had a hangover all year.

Injury? Dusty & Lambert & Balta the difference.
2020 Cotchin missed 4/17games prefinals; missed 6/23 this year: Edwards 2020 missed 7/17 games, 2021 7/23; Prestia 2020 missed 8/17 ; 2021 12/23 games. Lambert missed a lot more this year; Nank played 11/20 last year 16/23 this year. He gets a lot of clearances. Bolton actually has the most clearances for us.
But backline with Astbury 17/123 wasn't as injured as last year. But Broad played 14/23, and Balta out at same time compounded problems.

Captain is too one dimensional now. Dont get me wrong I love him. Has lost significant speed. can only be played in middle. Edwards is your link player type like cotchin but injuries are preventing him. Hope I am wrong.
cotch could go either way from a playing perspective, his leadership is key around the club though especially with a few senior guys leaving. completely disagree on edwards though

It worked so well because everyone knew exactly what to do and did it well. You could gamble and take risks because most of the time the structure and talent could cover it not going well.

Injuries mounting up and having to bring in guys that don't know the system as well (because of covid ruining the 2s for like 2 years now) as well rule changes making your game plan less effective which all leafs to trusting the game plan less and being unsure which leads to more mistakes which just spirals.

The second half of the year was just so obvious that no one really knew what to do anymore. There was so much decision making that would never ever happen the 4 years before. Was it Prestia the other day that just could not decide what to do wtih the ball and got caught? Never seen that every before.

Hopefully a long off season will help this next season, because we can play so much better than we did. This isn't just an ageing stars thing, it was a game plan and confidence thing.

Cotchin still provides plenty. His stats are actually quite comparable to 2019 with most people just above or just below

We've ben hit hard by injury for quite a few years now.

I am saying one or the other, you dont have to be einstein about what I am saying. well get more out of edwards. my thoughts only.
