Obviously the press is focused right now on the Trade Period, but one thing we havent heard a great deal about is who replaces Sam Mitchell? The club would be doing its best in the background to identify people it would be interested in. Who looks the goods and would be able to offer something to the game style and culture that Simmo has introduced and develop in the last five years?

I have a feeling the club will just shuffle the ranks and add a new development coach - not someone to directly replace Mitchell.

Hickmott maybe? - been there a long time now.

Bloody tough to replace him.

To a player, every player in the midfield has made a statement publicly at some point about how much of an influence he has been on them and has helped to improve them.

Even during all this talk of Gaff/Lycett leaving - he was the one I felt we would miss the most.

But I am grateful for the two years he spent with us and for the instrumental role he no doubt played in helping us win the premiership.

What a bloody resume he is compiling? But more than that, the kudos he is getting from the players is probably the most impressive of all.

Gonna miss you Sam, you Gatorade-throwing shit stirrer.

Who replaces him? NFI, but he/she better have a good Gatorade throwing game.

Luke Webster will get a promotion no doubt. Similar to when we had Graham promoted from East Perth.

Oh dear I sincerely hope not.

Is he not a good coach?

Watching him coach East Perth these last few years, I was not at all impressed, his game day coaching is woeful.

We seem to apppoint underwhelming assistant coaches who don’t have many runs on the Board , Mitchell was the exception, as he has a brilliant football brain.

I would think as reigning Premiers an assistant gig in the midfield would be a plum role , that would be a sought after appointment. An opportunity for an aspiring coach to see up close how Simpson operates and learn from his tutelage.

Therefore I would like us to cast a wider more expansive search rather than just an internal appointment.

If we did go for a newbie I would prefer someone who has reciently played the game at the highest level.

I like the Glass suggestion ( by way of an example ) as it’s someone not that long out of the game and also someone who has been exposed to the fruitful Clarkson Coaching Tree, which incidentally has produced the last three Premiership Coaches. Beverage, Hardwick and now Simpson.

True but some underwhelming ones have lead to good assistant coaches over the years. Hickmott, Longmuire & David Teague are some good examples.

Ex players and current players have spoken about those 3 quite highly over the years.

I remember the winging on here when Pyke got a job with us - next minute all want him to replace Simmo

Yes those you mention have all worked out well and all had a good body of coaching work behind them before they joined us .

Webster not so .

Nepotism is a very dangerous thing and needs to be avoided.

Well with the precedent set by Geelong it would seem Mitchell will be remaining as an assistant coach at WCE next year

After all a contracts a contract and family circumstances don’t outweigh that

Surely we can claim that a Brownlow medal winner and premiership midfield coach at the WCE is a valuable enough asset to hold him to his contact but I guess 2nd in the Geelongs BnF is a bigger deal (yes I am partisan)
