Saints part ways with high-performance chief and assistant coaches

St Kilda’s high-performance chief Matt Hornsby and assistant coaches Aaron Hamill and Adam Skrobalak will depart in the wake of the Saints’ poor 2021 campaign.

Head physio Andrew Wallis is also leaving the club.

Club sources said Hornsby, who had been at the Saints for six seasons after more than a decade with Richmond, will leave as part of St Kilda’s off-field changes following a year in which Brett Ratten’s side failed to make the finals.

Former captain Hamill had been on the club’s coaching staff for a decade, while Skrobalak had also been at the Saints since the early days of Alan Richardson’s tenure.

The Saints struggled with a long and crippling injury list for much of the season, with key players such as Zak Jones, Rowan Marshall and Paddy Ryder all missing sizeable chunks of football.

At one stage during the middle of the campaign the Saints had only 29 players to select from, such was the extent of their injuries.

Further off-season change is expected at Moorabbin. Ratten has one year remaining on his contract, having taken the senior job at the end of 2019 and taking the club to the finals in his first full season at the helm.

The Saints ended the year strongly, thrashing Fremantle to finish in 10th with a 10-12 record.

Timing is right for a change up. Skrobolak/Lade/Hamill have been in the primary assistant roles for a while now. Would love to get someone senior - Teague/Dew/Leppitsch etc. Even a Matthew Knights type would be great.

Surely we could find someone more credentialed than The Skrob to be in charge of the midfield

We get smashed in the clearances by bog average teams, just doesn't seem like there's a good collective strategy at centre stoppages

Richo loved to surround himself with turkeys so that he could make himself look better. Slowly but surely, the stench of Alan Richardson is being removed from Moorabbin.

About time we had a St.Kilda person involved in our coaching.
It depends on the St Kilda person Barry.
McQualter or X Clarke might have the credentials now, given their record at Richmond.
Would Harvey invest in an assistant role given he is unlikely to be required at Collingwood and he missed the senior role at Moorabbin?
Is there anyone else that springs to mind?

Lade to move to specialist ruck and midfield/stoppage coach.
Teague to coach the forwards/ball movement.
Buckley to coach the defensive setup with Pendles in at half back as playing coach of the defence.

Since we kept Lade, I think we should make a run at the tallest coaching setup in the league. Get Sandi over as midfield coach, Peter Street to coach the backs, and get Mason Cox on a player-coaching deal. Maybe see if Blake McGrath wants to come back as a development coach.

But keep Benny McGlynn just for the lols when he stands next to them.

Hornsby had to go we looked so unfit at the start of the year & that played onto our skill level. poor preseason we finally got some fitness mid season & results showed.
I've been saying this all season as well. Was a bit surprised in the Q&A when Rath and co answered the question as saying that the stats and eye test looked like they were fit.

Maybe that was just a bit of a cover up to save face and fast forward 4 months and our head of fitness is departing.

It was clear to me anyways that at the start of the season the players actually looked like they were busting a gut, but were nowhere near the sustained effort that was required to win games of footy. The only player that looked it was Steele due to his own program and also Bruce mentioning the work them 2 hvae put in while in Canberra during the off season.

I'd be throwing some big bucks at Darren Burgess and trying to get him away from the Dees.

I think you'll find it is McGlynn that is responsible for clearances - and on shaky ground. Skrobolak went of his own volition.

Why would he leave them though? Unless we made him a godfather offer, but that would cripple the rest of our soft cap.
Well i'd be enquiring to see what he is getting at the Dess... Looking at the coaching line up they have assembled, i think we would have a lot more room to move then what they do.
