I usually go for a long walk on Saturday mornings so today I decided to fire up the Nick Cave playlist on my Ipod and wander along through a couple of suburbs for my constitutional, down past the Veneto Club to Bulleen Park so I could watch some of the Coburg practice match.

I arrived during the quarter time break and made myself comfortable on the fence. I have no idea what the score was at that stage and the solar-powered scoreboard remained incommunicado throughout the game, giving nothing away.

By my rough reckoning, each team kicked 9 goals and chump change in the those three quarters so whoever was leading at that first break probably won, not that either team was particularly excited at the end of the game. They just shook hands, chatted and wanderered off the field like good little professional and wannabe professional sportsmen, no doubt turning their thoughts to ice-baths and vegetarian pizzas.

Firstly who didn't play. There was no Edwards, Derickx, Hislop, Griffiths, O'Reilly or Hicks. They obviously joined Newman, Jack and Moore on the sidelines.

That left us with Taylor, Post, Westhoff and MacDonald who all played up forward, Gourdis who played down back, Browne, who rucked and played full-forward and Webberley, Nason, Jakobi, Contin and Keddell (if he was no 5) who were all on the ball.

The on-ballers. Nason and Webberley played on the wings and Jakobi, Contin and Keddell were rotated through the middle. Isn't that a fitting metaphor for the Tigers at the moment? Listed players on the wings and rookies and VFL boys in the guts. Nason and Webberley were both good on the overlap and generally presented as running options. Each turned the ball over occasionally but both presented well. Contin and Keddell both won plenty of hard ball in the middle. Jakobi looked like he was tagging Meli, who kicked a couple of nice goals but Jakobi gave plenty of drive. All five had good games. All five were outstanding with their tackling.

Browne did well in the ruck, positioned himself well at centre bounces and throw-ins and presented for several marking contests. Unfortunately, he pretty much dropped every mark he attempted, even the easy ones and missed at least one easy goal. When he finally held a mark in the last quarter he deserved a bronx cheer but the crowd of a couple hundred trainers, coaches, team-mates, girl-friends, hangers-on, sausage-sizzlers and me were much too polite for that. He is not quite right yet but at least he is getting to the right places.

Post was very vocal, led well and took some very good marks. He had a very good game, when he was on the field, playing exclusively as the Full-forward. Westhoff did a couple of nice things across half-forward and Taylor didn't seem to spend much time on the field at all, maybe five minutes on and 15 off. I'd say he was mainly rested.

MacDonald is smart across half-forward. He runs hard, kicks well, even under pressure and is lively. He projects as someone who can hold down a lead-up spot in a couple of seasons. Reasonably impressed with what I saw.

Gourdis was a rock in defence. He marked very well and spoiled effectively when in a pressure situation. The only time I saw him outmarked was in the third quarter when a Bendigo forward flew between Gourdis and another Coburg defender. Gourdis pulled out of the spoil because he thought his team-mate had it covered, which of course, he didn't.

I watched his disposal carefully and he hit every target-it was not his fault that at least three of his passes were straight to players who dropped easy marks but they will probably go down in the book as ineffective kicks.

He also provided some nice lols deep in the last quarter with a 50m run past a collection of slow-moving opponents, bouncing the ball and running closer and closer to the boundary until he ran out of space and was pinged for running too far. His team-mates in the "stand" thought it was hilarious. Unfortunately, he was exhausted after that, came off the field and Bendigo kicked a couple of goals to finish the game in his absence, and most likely, win. Nonetheless, he is impressively quick.

Was also at the game, very good summary T70, I thought we were all over Bendigo just lacked finishing class, if Posty can develop his composure in the air and start holding hs marks he can become a very important forward should have finished with 5 or 6 today
agree Goo was all over Little, had the state full forward pulling his hair out all day conceded a couple of goals to him late in the last quarter from other players turnovers, his contested and intersept marking and run out of the backline was very good
Made it a point to speak briefly to both boys after the game, as there has been questions about both their pre seasons so far,
Jay has had a couple of niggling injuries that have set him back a month but is fine now
Dave is still suffering from a stomach virus he got at the end of season trip to Phuket and has struggled a bit over the pre season said he's still not 100% but getting there
Expect big improvement from both boys over the next month
Aslo agree Nas and Webs worked hard into attack and more importantly defence, very good signs
What ever the result was Coburg should have won by 5 goals, alas the story of last season

Thanks for all that info Spock. That might explain why they have'nt give David G. a run in the NAB. It sounds positive. Hopefully he can get to full health/strength and press for a position in the 1st's.

Went to the game as well. Some match observations.

We played two stay at home wingers (Nason and Webberley). From what I could gather from the PA/Alice Springs game, this is a Richmond game style that Coburg adopted. They are/were release players. Last year the release player was on the defensive 50. he's moved 50 metres up the ground.

All the RFC players (Nason, Webberley, Contin and MacDonald) when getting possession on the wing would, if at all possible, turn back inside and hit up a player on the forward edge of the square. This led to risky, thread the needle passes, but was done every time possible. The riskiest passes hit less than 30%.

The players all looked very heavy legged. Nason got run down a number of times. Brownie struggled to kick the ball 30 metres. Post dribbled a couple off the boot. After half way through the 3rd (when we were comfortably in front) we just had no more run. In the 2nd quarter we killed them. Ran hard and looked very smooth and slick. (BTW: The heavy legs makes sense to me. Closed sessions last week and this. RFCO stating it is getting intense. It would be the natural build up to the season for the final 4 week training block. Two very heavy weeks and then freshen up into round 1.)

They played a zone for about 3 full quarters. We played a partial zone and partial man on man. A full time stay at home FB (Gourdis). We ripped their zone to shreds in the 2nd q. Couldn't breach it for the rest of the game.

We won most of the hitouts. Browne was immense in the rucks. We lost most of the center clearances. we won most of the contested ball and round the ground stoppages. So when the player numbers at the ball were limited (center bounces) we lost. When the numbers were greater we won. Part of the reason for losing the center clearances was that our wingers did not enter the square. Bendigo's did. So it became a 6 on 4 contest.

Our tackling was superb. Bendigo had more run. We tackled and tackled hard. Very, very good technique side on and there will be some very sore Bendigo boys today. All the RFC boys executed good tackles. Brownie rag dolled a couple of Bendigo boys. Funny to see.

As Forbesy stated, the RFC players (Nason, Contin Webberley) were noticeable when in congested situations they would invite the tackle, make sure they got their arms free and then hand pass. They all worked hard to draw players and free someone up.

Much as I hate to say it, the umpires were very, very good. if the AFL games get umpired this way this year, we will enjoy the football. At every occasion the player going for the ball was given every protection. If you had your head down and your focus was the ball, you got protected. The player sweating on a player going for the ball got nothing.

I'll do a player for player break down for the RFC boys.

Troy Taylor: Lasted 15 minutes. Went on with a strapped up calf. Got one touch. Seemed only a twinge. He seemed pretty relaxed and happy and was "in" with the RFC boys who came down, Griffiths, Conca, O'Rielly, Hicks, Astbury (had a compression bandage on his calf/ankle), Vickery. Troy is tall. Only just shorter, say about 3 cm, than Jayden Post. He has filled out. In the warm up he just looked so good. His handling was a step above anyone else on the park.

Nick Westhoff: Played forward pocket/forward flank. Kicked two goals from what I could work out. Definitely 1, the first, which was a very smart piece of play. He is agile and good below his knees for a tall guy. Does lack intensity at times and got called for it by Adam Potter at 3/4 time.

Jayden Post: Played stay at home FF for the first 2 and a bit quarters. Kicked 2 or 3 goals. Could not buy a mark in the first half. Had very hard hands early on. Started taking marks the longer the game went on. Looked more and more assured the longer the game went. Had a couple of really weird kicks in the 1st quarter. One went 5 meters. As though he had no feeling in his legs. Worked hard both ways.

David Gourdis: played stay at home full back. Kicked well. Very well. Read the play very well and took some very good intercept marks. Got very badly outbodied once. At least once he spoiled back into traffic and cost a goal. (He was obviously called on it as he consciously spoiled to the boundary line thereafter.) Provided the comical moment in the game, late in the last quarter. He picked up the ball in the back pocket, saw no teammate in front of him to pass to so he took off. He ran around the boundary line for about 150 meters taking on 3 or 4 Bendigo players and just burning them off with pure speed. Finally got forward of the wing and the final Bendigo player, tried to run around him and would then have had an 80 meter run to goal. Got pinged for holding the ball.

Andrew Browne: Dominated the ruck work both in the center and around the ground. Got sharked at the center bounces 80% of the time. Had very hard hands when taking marks and dropped at least 5 sitters in the first 3 quarters. Finally held some marks in the 4th. Had three shots at goal from within 35 meters. Only made the distance once. Very good hands and handballs in traffic. Also laid good blocks/shepherds. When Hamish Dahl rucked we won the center clearances. Bendigo seemed to have a clear plan for Brownes tapouts, not so for Dahl. Andrew laid some beautiful tackles and was well rewarded for his effort. He hit the Bendigo rover a beauty with a swinging arm tackle that lifted the rover and then he body slammed him.

Pat Contin: When he was on (about 15 to 18 minutes a quarter) we won the center clearances or at least locked the ball down. Forbesy noted that. Contin on, no Bendigo run. Contin off, Bendigo got their running game up. Very good in traffic. Good hands and very good kicking. Just tried the high risk/high reward pass a little too often for my liking (though given that all the RFC boys were doing that, I'm guessing game plan approach). Got cut off too often on the high risk/high reward passes. Hit some very good passes to create scoring chances.

Jeremy Webberley: The best of the RFC boys IMO.Played his role as the stay at home wing, release player very well. Linked up well. Tackled well and worked well in traffic and was good at drawing the player taking the tackle and still getting a good handpass out. Had between 20 and 30 possessions by my reckoning. Missed some long kicks but also hit some beautiful long passes to great advantage (and goals), especially when he could go back inside and drive long to forward of CHF.

Ben Nason: Struggled early on. Got run down a number of times. Looked very sluggish. He, Post, Browne and McDonald looked the most heavy legged. As the game wore on got into it and started to hit passes and link up well. Laid some brilliant tackles. I think he got the same Bendigo player twice in a 5 minute period. That boy will be sore today. Ben absolutely slammed the guy from sideon and drove his shoulder into the boy's ribs. Great to see. Hit some beautiful long passes. Also got cut off a number of times when trying to thread the needle.

Dean McDonald: From what I could tell got limited game time. Seemed to be a sub and replaced Troy when he got injured. May have kicked a goal. Has very good composure in traffic and a very nice kick. Hit some good passes but like Pat, Jeremy and Ben tried to thread the needle a couple of times and got cut off. Looked nackered at the end of the game and definitely had less ground time than many of the boys.

Overall an enjoyable day. Coburg had a few of their good players in Dahl, No 24 (Morris ??) and a few out: Nick Carnell, Sam Power., etc. I think Coburg will do OK this year. No 24 (Morris ??) played half back and was very, very good. Possibly BOG for Coburg.

Apparently I missed Ben Jakobi and Mitch Keddell. I'll blame my mate who couldn't identify either of them.

Sensational stuff HK, thanks a ton mate :thumbsu:

I hope what you say about the heavy training routine of recent is on the money, might help explain a pretty lacklustre effort on Fri night by the main group.

For two years, I've said Browne is our best tap ruckman by a distance, just doesn't have the mobility. Is still only 20 I think, hope he sticks at it, has time on his side.

A lot of praise there for Patty Contin, will be interesting to see if he gets a go in the 1's this week against the Crows.

I believe Astbury has been troubled with a leg niggle for a few weeks now, hopefully nothing more than a niggle. He may still only be a rookie, but from what I've seen, our backline desperately needs him! Took a fantastic contested pack mark on Fri night early in the game, competing against most of Hawks tall forwards... unfortunately, ball was touched off the boot, which he didn't realise, and he was mugged after coming to ground with the ball.

Once again, thanks for the comprehensive info.
