Coldplay - Viva la Lida or Death and All His Friends

Go to coldplay.com and put your email in and you can download Coldplay's new song, Violet Hill.
Alternatively you can listen to their song on their myspace page.

Violet Hill is a bit different, but I like it, it takes a few listens

New album "Viva La Lida and Death and All His Friends" comes out June 14. Cant wait. :)
 
Hmm...I'm a big fan of theirs but my first impression of Violet Hill isn't great.

Hopefully there are a couple of hidden gems on the album, I fear for them if this is supposed to be the drawcard track though.
 
Have listened to the Violent Hill single 2 times and already i think it is alright, will have to listen to it a few more times obviously, but it seems to have more guitar effects then previous singles. Reminds me strangely of Muse, which isn't the best thing i must admit. I find Chris Martin doesn't have the voice to go up against a laden guitar effect background, i found is voice gets drowned out a bit.

Anyway, will buy the single and subsequent album. Hopefully it is a cracker.

I've been a Coldplay fan from the very beginning, and Parachutes is still easily my favourite of their records.

I am however quite happy with Violet Hill. Its just the first single.. which is usually the most radio friendly. If this is in fact the most commercial song on the record, then they're really backing up their pre-album talk about doing something different.

I think its great that they havent just written a radio song to get airplay (like Speed of Sound).
Reminds me of U2 bringing The Fly out as a first single from Achtung Baby all those years ago.

I have complete faith is Brian Eno and Coldplay!

I like Coldplay, but they're what I refer to as 'dessert music'. Very rich in melody, but it's easy to get sick of them after a few listens. Ultimately, most of their songs are very simple compositions.

The single isn't bad. Very similar to their X&Y album with a more noticeable guitar influence. It's easy on the ears; what more do you want from Coldplay?

Vocals seem a bit...I dunno. A bit odd. Dunno if I'm a fan, to be honest...maybe a few more listens might sway me over, but first impressions don't grab me much at all.

As for my top 5 Coldplay songs, would look something like this:

Rush Of Blood To The Head
Clocks
One I Love
Shiver
White Shadows
 
I listened it to it again - it is growing on me but it really sounds like the same song, with no real chorus.

My 5 favourites are:

First time I listened I thought it was pretty average. Listened to it twice more and yep, its grown on me to the point where I love it. :thumbsu:

2. In My Place
3. Yellow
4. Fix You
5. Everything's not Lost

Brilliant band, probably my favourite. It was tough naming my 5 favourites because I could've named a lot more.
 
What do we think of Swallowed in the Sea from their last album?

Personally I don't think it is given enough credit, great little track.

I agree Swallowed in the Sea was great, which was a favourite after What If.

Violet Hill has really grown on me after listening to it a lot. Can't wait for the new album.

Considering a lot of them are earlier songs, and there is hardly any X&Y there, I hold out hope for you all!

'Warning Sign' is pure U2, while 'Everything's Not Lost' is pure Oasis. Surprised there isn't more love for Amsterdam...

Does anyone else agree their earlier minimalist sound is infinitely better than the current one, and suits Martin's voice better?

VERY nearly made my list. As I said it was hard narrowing it down to 5, any number of other songs could have made it in. High Speed is also very good and gets better with each listen, even to this day.

His voice is drowned out a bit so I hope it is a bootleg, but sounds VERY U2ish to me.

listened to violet hill a few days ago didnt really click to me but over time i reckon i will.

yawn fest for the first minute. eno has lost the plot. the guitars are way to distorted and loud for martins vocals. he aint no freddie mercury.. it just aint strong enough. Its an Epic Failed atempt at something slightly more interesting and "Arena Rock" LOL
