Malthouse Resigns

malthouse_150.jpg

In a move that has shocked the Magpie community, Coach Mick Malthouse has resigned from his position as senior coach due to health problems. While the Collingwood Football Club were sad to see him go, they understand that his health must come first. They wish him the best of luck in the future and that he can continue his support of the club. It is believed that in honour of his efforts at both Collingwood and West Coast, once a year, their match will be named the "Malthouse Cup".

Williams appointed Magpie Coach

Just days after the shock resignation of senior Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse, the club has once again sent shocks to the AFL by appointing little known journalist, Peter Williams to lead the club in 2008 and beyond. "We are very pleased to have Peter at our club and his insight and knowledge of which no one else has will be invaluable to our club" President Eddie McGuire said. Peter Williams had this to say "I am honoured to be able to coach the greatest club in the land and I hope I can help lead the Collingwood Football Club into bigger and better things in 2008".

Williams pleased despite losses

Collingwood Coach Peter Williams has announced that he is pleased with his side's pre-season despite losing all four games. "It's easy to look at the pre-season and say, well they are going down the drain... That's not the case at all. Obviously each loss was worse as it went on because we were playing our youngsters. They will learn with time. The only game I really focus on is the first one, where we only just fell short of beating Brisbane at ANZ. That's the only main one. Now we focus on Round 1" Williams said at a press conference yesterday.

2008 AFL Season - Round 1
Collingwood vs Hawthorn @ MCG

COLLINGWOOD: 5.6 ~ 9.12 ~ 12.14 ~ 17.17 (119)
HAWTHORN: 2.1 ~ 2.7 ~ 6.14 ~ 11.18 (84)

In Collingwood's first official match with Peter Williams as Senior Coach, they came up against and equally young Hawthorn side. While nearly everyone was either focusing on Buddy Franklin as he lined up at CHF, or John Anthony's debut in the black and white, it was the Pies forward line that got them off to a flyer. They kicked nine goals to two in the first half, and while it was inaccurate, their second quarter demolition in which saw the Hawks kick six behinds, set them up for the match. Buddy probably was wishing he could kick six behinds because John Anthony was with him every step of the way, and kept the superstar scoreless in his debut match. Franklin ended up with a lowly 11 possessions and 8 marks. Not much different to Anthony Rocca up the other end, except Rocca kicked 4 goals to complement it. While Hawthorn's more experienced midfield of Hodge, Crawford and Mitchell was on top of the Pies' youth brigade, it was the delivery into the forward line that gave the Pies' the upper hand. Collingwood travel to Subiaco next week full of confidence after the 35 point win.

2008 AFL Season - Round 2
Collingwood vs Fremantle @ Subiaco

COLLINGWOOD: 4.3 ~ 5.5 ~ 5.11 ~ 9.15 (69)
FREMANTLE: 3.3 ~ 7.9 ~ 14.9 ~ 17.12 (114)

As the hot, humid overnight temperature of 34c set in, the Collingwood players began to wilt. After a brilliant first quarter in which they topped the locals by a goal, they only kicked one more goal for the next two quarters. Fremantle kicked 11, which blew the game wide open with a lead of 52 points at the final break. A call from coach Peter Williams to at least drag back some respect saw them marginally outscore the Dockers and bring the margin back to 45 points in a night that was certainly not theirs. Rocca was good, not on the stats sheet, but 4 goals at least got his team fired up. Three of which were in the first quarter. Ryan Lonie continued his great form, being the best in a Magpie jumper. But it was Chris Tarrant, who, much to the Magpie Army's disgust, was on fire, kicking 5 goals. It was a bid by Coach Williams that didn't pay off, with his other defenders closely checking Pavlich and co. It was a disappointing result for the Magpies, but now they fly home, ready to bounce back against the Kangaroos in a week's time.

Yeah it does, but as long as you have the lists, it doesn't matter that much, after all, it's just a title.

2008 AFL Season - Round 3
Collingwood vs Kangaroos @ Telstra Dome

COLLINGWOOD: 1.0 ~ 4.0 ~ 6.1 ~ 8.2 (50)
KANGAROOS: 3.4 ~ 7.8 ~ 8.10 ~ 13.15 (93)

After a disappointing match on the road against Fremantle, the Pies were looking to make amends to their supporters. While many had questioned their accuracy in past times, tonight they were spot on, only kicking two behinds, one of which was rushed by a Kangaroos player. While their first three quarters had been pitiful, only managing six goals, they were only 21 points down at the last break. A comeback was possible, but instead they were blown away by a faster, fitter, Kangaroos side producing a 5-2 goal quarter to down the Pies by 43 points. While Coach Williams was left scratching his head, with having a near full side he said that "experimenting" players in different positions may be the go, after the "shock loss". Scott Pendlebury and Josh Fraser were once again amongst the best for the Pies while Rusling and Rocca were the only multiple goal scorers for the Pies with two a piece.

I will play the next round later but just out of interest any ideas? Should I play Chris Dawes as a back because I realise I have a very weak backline in terms of strength. Maybe bring Thoolen in and give him a run? Move O'Bree to a flank and maybe shove Didak in the middle?

I have being slaughtered with clearances so I need to fix that. Perhaps play the match rather than skipping it? Any ideas people?

2008 AFL Season - Round 4
Collingwood vs Richmond @ MCG

COLLINGWOOD: 3.1 ~ 6.4 ~ 9.5 ~ 12.7 (79)
RICHMOND: 2.2 ~ 6.5 ~ 8.8 ~ 13.10 (88)

Friday Night Football was back at the G' and two fierce rivals took to centre stage, both looking for their second win for the season. With a new looking midfield, the Pies got the early hand with Rocca seemingly unstoppable at full forward. While Pendlebury was dominating in the midfield, Rocca was putting it on the scoreboard. But once again, Collingwood couldn't finish out the match being outscored five goals to three in the final term. While John McCarthy's debut was promising, the Pies are still a step away from being a good, consistent unit. Next week's ANZAC Day clash will be the pivotal moment in their season.

Just realised while editing the players, I have left Marty Clarke's Endurance as '4'. Obviously meaning to be '64' or '74'. So for the record, him even running out a game is amazing.

P.S. The next lowest Endurance in my side is '52'.

Collingwood vs Essendon @ MCG

COLLINGWOOD: 8.2 ~ 14.7 ~ 18.9 ~ 23.11 (149)
ESSENDON: 4.2 ~ 8.5 ~ 13.7 ~ 19.13 (127)

It was here once again that we honour the ANZAC's and what they did. How would the Pies perform on the biggest stage while going through a rough patch. As Darcy Daniher lined up on Anthony Rocca, few knew what could happen. 15 minutes later, he was assigned the newbie in Dawes, after Rocca had belted three. By the end of the quarter, Rocca had five, with the Pies leaving the forward line open one on one for him. They were killing them in the midfield duels with Pendlebury already having 10 Possies, 3 Marks and 4 Clearances. All was well until 4 minutes into the second quarter when Travis Cloke went down with Broken Ribs. Less than two minutes later, his replacement in Dawes, kicked a goal. While Rocca only kicked one goal in the second quarter, he didn't need to do much. Pendlebury rested in the forward line and kicked a couple as did McCarthy. During the middle of the third quarter, the Bombers mounted a comeback kicking four goals while Dawes and O'Bree rested on the bench. Then the arm wrestle occured for the last ten minutes until Rocca booted another one from the goal square to bring his total to eight for the match. After all that hard work, the Bombers had only won the quarter by a goal. The heavens began to close and the clouds came in. This made the Pies push harder as everyone was chipping in, but once again the Bombers came back, outscoring the Pies by one more goal in the final term but it wasn't enough as this was the Pies' day to shine.

2008 AFL Season - Round 6
Collingwood vs Carlton @ MCG

COLLINGWOOD: 4.3 ~ 11.6 ~ 12.7 ~ 14.12 (96)
CARLTON: 7.1 ~ 12.5 ~ 24.9 ~ 26.13 (169)

Both these arch rivals had big wins last week, but it was Carlton who blew the Pies away in the opening quarter kicking the first seven goals of the match. From there, the Pies got into gear, kicking the last four goals of the quarter to be only 16 points down and have a bit more confidence. When Reid kicked the first of the quarter, the Collingwood morale went up. Then Carlton kicked three on the trot and the see-saw momentum continued. As a gale force wind blew towards the Magpie goals, Carlton set into lockdown, securing the forwards, even with Fraser standing there stretching their limits. Sean Rusling appeared to be the hero, coming on to replace the tired Dawes, kicking a goal and setting up a couple more as suddenly and surprisingly the margin was just five points. With the wind now blowing towards the Carlton end, the Magpies needed to keep it tight. Carlton blew away with five goals in the opening eleven minutes. Game over by three quarter time, with the lead a massive 74 points. To sum up the anger that the Magpie box was feeling, Coach Peter Williams stormed out only to return just before the siren. Carlton had kicked twelve goals to one that quarter. Collingwood's attacking style of play was destroyed by the wind. When things couldn't possibly go any worse for the Pies, Sean Rusling strained a quad at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter. Infact according to the Magpie Coach, he was "relieved" when the final siren went. The Blues had embarrassed the Pies by 73 points.

2008 AFL Season - Round 7
Collingwood vs Bulldogs @ MCG

COLLINGWOOD: 7.5 ~ 10.9 ~ 19.13 ~ 19.16 (130)
BULLDOGS: 4.2 ~ 9.5 ~ 9.10 ~ 16.15 (111)

Two teams wanting to make a proper start to the season and claim their third win met on a Saturday Afternoon in lovely sunshine. The Bulldogs had Brad Johnson in their lineup despite being injured, he was benched 17 minutes in. In the first quarter, the hard slog was evident with goals coming from great plays which the crowd loved. With a three goal breeze blowing Collingwood's way, they found themselves 19 points up at quarter time. The Bulldogs came out firing kicking the first five goals of the second quarter. An armwrestle was followed, but Collingwood were the ones who managed to put it on the scoreboard kicking the next three goals and holding a ten point break at the half. Collingwood responded straight away in the second half kicking three goals in four minutes as Ryan Hargrave went down and the Bulldogs had 20 fit players. Then a knee injury to Ryan Lonie forced him off the field. Many were wondering if the Pies would fail in the third quarter last week. It was to be quite the opposite, with them kicking nine goals and keeping the Bulldogs goal less. Rocca had another bag of six goals already. With the margin at a mammoth 63 points, the Pies hoped they could hold on with the strong breeze now favouring the Bulldogs. As expected the Bulldogs came back kicking six goals to zip, but it wasn't enough as the Pies triumphed by 19 points.

Ouch... that's gotta hurt losing to Carlton like that:confused:

Realistically they played alright for three quarters but had a shocking third quarter. I tried everything but nothing would work. I could have flooded but I chose to keep trying to play attacking footy.
