Collingwood and Richmond request to play each other twice in 2013

COLLINGWOOD and Richmond are hoping to rebuild their once-storied rivalry, having requested that the AFL schedule the clubs to play each other twice again next year.
Now on one hand it's not an unreasonable request as the two sides haven't played each other twice since 2007.
However, considering clubs now only play return matches against 5 of the 17 other sides, which sides you play twice has never been more important, for branding, revenue and most importantly the difficulty of the fixture.
Note: both Collingwood and Richmond are wanting to play Essendon and Carlton twice as well as each other
So Collingwood, a team that has played in at least 3 Grand Finals in 2010-2012 wants to play 3 teams outside the top 8 twice. There is no question that Collingwood has had the hardest fixture in 2012, but playing at least 3 return matches against sides outside the 8 seems a little easy.
Financially, all clubs marketing departments like Home matches against Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon.
11 out of 17 clubs will get a Home match against the Pies in 2013. So you'd expect about a 2/3 chance of getting one.
However, assuming Collingwood will play 9 Home and 5 Away at the MCG, 2 Home and 1 Away at Etihad and 5 outside Victoria we can assess each sides chance of getting one
Interstate
Sydney 100%
Other Non-Victorian sides 4/7=57%
MCG
Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, Richmond 100%
Hawthorn, Geelong 1/2=50%
Etihad
St Kilda, Bulldogs, North 1/3=33%

Very surprised that it didn't happen this year, really.

Spent a good hour err, 5 minutes trying to wrack my brain about the second Richmond/Collingwood game this year.

I wouldn't have a problem if Essendon didn't have a guaranteed return fixture against Collingwood or Carlton. Restricts the rest of the fixture too much.

As for the Pies and Tigers, they're due a return fixture, it's been five years. Until this year, we hadn't played North twice since 2001. We haven't played Melbourne twice since 2005. The inequity of the fixture is not good.

How many rivalries do you want ?

Heres the tip richmong, you probably only played collingwood once a year nbecause you got Carlton and essendon twice per year.

AND a rivalry can thrive on one game per year, can it not ? Hawks are still essendons 'rivals'

given the 18 clubs in 22 games split you should be playing just one of those teams twice per year on a rotating basis
These big 4 dreams were cute before but in the current expanded league means they are an unaffordable luxury

Surprised it’s not already the case.

We play all of Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond twice, I doubt there’s ever been a year when we haven’t.

Collingwood playing Essendon, Carlton and Richmond twice is exactly the same thing.

Who gives a shit where they finished, we all know it’s not a consideration anyway. The draw is about the money.

At the risk of firing up the richmond hawthorn crowd pissing contest I'd suggest Hawthorn are the ones who should be getting these return games (except against richmond of course)

But I personally believe the fixture should be rotated on a fair basis. I could concede one rivalry per club as an exception in the spirit of growing the game in NSW Qld, perth and adelaide

Richmond already want to play Carlton, Essendon and Melbourne twice a year, don't they?

Wish we got to play Richmond twice a year.

Collingwood v Geelong/Hawthorn have been bigger clashes than Collingwood/Richmond the last few years.

That looks like it will flip back to Richmond in the coming years so they'll probably just take our place in playing them twice.

Let's just **** Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon & Richmond off and they can have their own league. They can play each other 7 times a year. The rest of us can worry about playing each other twice (home and away) and get on with it.

Requesting return fixtures against Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton does strike me as being a little greedy, when some disadvantaged Victorian teams will struggle to get even one of those teams as a home game.

If the request is granted, you have been given something on one hand by the AFL, but you must lose something on the other hand as a consequence.

Whether that be 6 or more interstate trips or hosting nearly or all non-Victorian teams at home will be left up to the AFL.

OH yeah let's do that, because I bet Hawthorn have NEVER requested a game. Get over yourself mate, every club does it.

Looks like someone is feeling excluded.

Funny thing is, apart from Collingwood, we wouldnt lose much at this point in tme

I like how the OP left out this part so be can ram down his hatred towards all things Richmond.

'The Tigers have backed Collingwood's push to have the clubs play twice a season'

'Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert confirmed that the Magpies had formally requested the AFL schedule two games against Richmond in 2013'

Yeah, only 5 of your top 7 crowds for the year would disappear.

Not to mention 5 wins from 6 games leaving as well.

That fixture requests are not only solicited but potentially accommodated is an utter farce

I don't mind the AFL asking and clubs making requests, but the priority should be a fairer fixture.

e.g. Richmond & Carlton ask to play each other in a season opener should be OK (when they play doesn't affect the fairness of the fixture after all), but asking to play another team twice shouldn't be allowed (* - all teams allowed 1 'rival' they can play twice to ensure derbies, etc and cut down on travel for non-vic teams).
