If I recall correctly the FS processes had been evolving prior to the Cats cleaning up. Had previously moved from 50 games to 100 games qualification. There was talk of abolishing it altogether so at a minimum was always going to be tightened but it all just took time. GAJr - 2001 draft, Hawkins - 2006, Moore (1st year of bidding) - 2014.

That’s my memory of the progression of the stipulations around it, but the bidding was introduced earlier. It goes back at least to 2008 when Ayce Cordy was bid on in the 1st round by St Kilda.

Out of curiosity I wonder which side has had the most father sons in at one time, in one game?

Geelong must have been thereabouts.

We have had Moore Daicos Brown in a game.
I’m holding out for Moore, Daicos, Daicos, Brown, Brown.

In 2005-06 we had all 3x Cloke's and 2x Shaw's at the club. Did all 5 ever play in the same game?
What a great pick up.
Would surely be a record if it’s 5 players in one team.

But did it happen, have to admit, don’t recall that, i think it would be something I’d pick up on as these quirks I find fascinating.

Probably got banned and then renamed himself. Did anyone come on board with really high posting numbers not long after he disappeared?
Not banned on his / her avatar.

Might either have wised up, and left it all behind. Found other things to do.

Moved on.

Father son a strange future...

Key backs: W Kelly ~ D Moore
Key Centreline: A Buckley ~ J Buckley
Forwards: J Daicos ~ N Daicos
On ball types: T Brown ~ C Brown

Just did a quick check and as far as I can see we only ever played 4 together, R20 2006 v Port. Cam Cloke missed out.

In 05 Rhyce Shaw did his knee if I remember correctly and missed the a lot of footy till mid 2006.

I just don’t recall five of them playing.

I’m sure that’s a quirky thing I’d think of and pick up.

But you never know.

Four sounds the marker.

What does that mean though? "Held back?"

I'm not familiar with how it all works.

As an example I played cricket with Brett Voss and his son Jackson. Jackson when he was 16 didn't really care about footy or if he did only playing junior footy with his mates. I thought at the time he is not interested in making it. All of a sudden he is 18, playing centre for Sandringham under 18's and dominating...

NAB league under 16's doesn't mean much, a lot of kids will get found out for the first time at that level and a few kids will totally bypass it and still be among the first picked for under 18's when it becomes serious.

Under 16's are plucked from junior level from all over the place from playing well at under 15 local level but it's a big step up when kids have to play on kids their own size and talent, that's what sorts the wheat from the chaff and who is genuinely an elite talent. Only those ones go to under 18's and some kids can skip under 16's and we still be recognised an as elite talent for 18's, especially father sons who have a pedigree, they will give them a shot if they want it.

Here's a game from 2007 where Geelong had 5 Father-Sons playing: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2007/030920070407.html

Gary Ablett jnr., Nathan Ablett, Mark Blake, Tom Hawkins & Matthew Scarlett.

I don't know for sure what the record is for the most F-S players in a team, but it would be very surprising if this could be beaten.

Surely it would be this (or at least equal), with five players.

It’s quite remarkable.

I do love the father son so it’s a great celebration of tradition.

NB: Mark Blake is the great get, being Rod’s son.

Looking at your footer we had 5 premierships by this stage of the 20th century already... we need to make our move in this century to stamp ourselves, we have played enough Grand Finals.
A quick burst of 2 or 3 flags won in a short period of time would change the look of things dramatically, and help push some bad memories into the background. I'm hoping that good run starts this year! It just might!

I would just love to overtake Carlton and Essendon on the flags tally...

Yeah, I love the father-son rule; it's a great thing for the game to see sons playing at the club where their fathers played. It's interesting to see just how well some clubs (e.g. Collingwood, Geelong and Western Bulldogs) have done out of it over the years, yet the likes of Hawthorn and St Kilda have fared horribly.

Currently, Collingwood, Geelong and the Bulldogs all have 5 players on their books who (originally) went to the club as F-S recruits.

I’m sure I heard somewhere along the line that Nick was being held out of rep footy, and was just going to play for school/APS.

Either way, you don’t go from all-world to can’t make the Oakleigh U16’s squad that quickly. Something doesn’t add up there.
Exactamundo!!
If his name was on their list he'd be the first selected.

We need to be very careful with Nick, don't wanna show him the lights to early.

Interesting. Wouldn't you assume though that it doesn't make a difference? At some point Daicos would get to the TAC Cup (or NAB League, whatever) anyway, and any list manager or talent identification staff worth their salt would be aware of him anyway?

Up to now he's been killing it vs players in the tac teams but in school footy instead, given many play both. All it does is dampen expectations of supporters, scouts would still have a rough gauge on his ability and potential.

Played school footy for the Carey firsts today against SKevs. Apparently played pretty well too and kicked at least one goal.
