Good luck with the grass.
It’s about time AFL was played on astroturf. We should also wear padding and helmets. Why handball and kick when you can throw?

Mollythedolly, Tasmanians will show up to support teams that are actually half decent or their own. NBL games in Tasmania used to get largely ignored. People now show up in force. Because they have a side they have a connection to.

So which is it? They had the reigning premiers (clearly a half decent team) playing out of York Park and still couldn't manage even 75% capacity. I'm happy for you to think they'll turn up, but the evidence doesn't support that premise. I worry they'll never overcome the North-South divide and that it'll be years before they're team is competitive enough to justify it. Good luck to them, I think they'll need it.

I don't think you can base it off current gate figures in Tassie. For a large percentage of the tassie population - those games are neutral in terms of support - how many of us diehards go along to many non-pies games? Once they have a club which is widely supported, their should be more buy in - it'll be interesting to see how quickly they do get the supporter buy in and how many continue to barrack for their current team.

And I don't think you can ignore them given they're the only actual evidence we can draw upon, and the numbers are already augmented by travelling supporters. I've also got a number of mates with MCC memberships who live in Melbourne who won't hesitate to turn up to neutral games at the G. I used to have access to free tickets, and I've done it myself.

I personally think a Tassie team will struggle - player retention if nothing else. But I think crowd analysis and prediction is one area that I'd expect the AFL to be on top of, so I don't think that'll be an issue if they do get the green light

It's memberships that they'll be banking on, not attendances.

There aren't many supporters who travel from interstate. Across Tasmania, yes. Interstate, not really. I'm sure there are some but it's not very common at all.

My partner supports Hawthorn and we used to go to at least one game every year in Launceston and in those early years there were massive numbers coming down from Melbourne. Flights and accommodation were always full.

But Hawthorn started playing 4 games a year there, mostly against non Vic sides, and Hawthorn aren‘t the biggest club. Naturally, the numbers travelling started declining.

When the Tassie team starts up there will be huge numbers of away fans travelling again. And the novelty won’t wear out as fast because teams won’t play there every year. Hawthorn had 4 games every season, most teams will only play 4 games in Tassie every 6 or 7 years.

I intend to go see Collingwood play there as soon as possible, but I guarantee it will be hard getting tickets for those first few times.

This is the Collingwood news an media thread?
No?
Nuff talk of Tassie unless one of the boys has put a shot of the "map" on social media.
Not Jordie surely?

Exactly.
Tassie going to get 100% behind their team as well. They'll be filling their stadium regularly.

The Ginnivan/Elliott event I went to last night was pretty good (though I agree that for the price it arguably wasn't worth it).

The two interesting points that I picked up on:

The host asked Elliott about the difference between Bucks and Fly as coaches, and then asked Ginnivan what he thought of Bucks. Ginnivan replied "no comment."

Elliott said he was quite close to going to Brisbane in 2019, and it was solely because he had lost faith with our medical team. But he said changes were made to that department that gave him peace of mind, and he now feels like can go for another 5 years.

I think that's the best part of what has been announced. Tasmania deserves a 21st century stadium. It'll have much broader applications than just AFL footy.
Though speaking to a few taswegions recently when I asked if they were stoked about a team starting up there (and the stadium being built), they were more unhappy the $ isn’t going into a hospital upgrade.

I did warn you they wouldn't be buying into club politics.

But a whisper I've heard - it's only a whisper - is that Bucks started losing the playing group as his marriage collapsed during hub life. By the middle of 2021, after the disaster of 2020, he was so far removed from the core and club that the players began coaching themselves and he was there simply for media purposes. We'll never know the truth of what went down at the club in that period but there were a number of unhappy boys and much disconnect. It speaks volumes that only 10 players from the 2018 Grand Final side remain at the club.

Fortunately, we are in a much happier place now, as the 2022 season shows & players want to come to us now.
Bring on 2023!!!

Of the others though, Six retired, four traded and the others delisted.

Can’t blame him for that, the fans had lost faith too.

Disaster of 2020? We won an EF in the west?

he was so far removed from the core and club that the players began coaching themselves and he was there simply for media purposes.

What was the footy boss, senior assistant, and assistant coaches doing amongst all this? Even with slashed staffing levels due to Covid, hard to imagine players of any club having to resort to coaching themselves.

We'll never know the truth of what went down at the club in that period but there were a number of unhappy boys and much disconnect.

2017 to 2021 will go down as an intriguing period in the club’s history. Surely somebody will come out with a book about it (Buckley? Ed?)

It speaks volumes that only 10 players from the 2018 Grand Final side remain at the club.

I don’t remember too many of those who left had requested a trade?

2020 was a disaster off-field. We underperformed on-field and were lucky to play finals. In 2019, we went from being near top of the table to, just a year later, having to fight most games to win. Many teams showed us up and Geelong absolutely roasted us in the semi-final that year. The EF was a good game but we were close to choking.

The footy boss and others were doing their best BUT the club really was in crisis. It was a disaster compounded by COVID. Had COVID not hit, then I believe we would have made the Grand Final that year. We were good when we were on but far from it too often.

I don't know if a book will ever be written because it's not in the AFL's style to have damaging or hard-hitting books written, particularly not about clubs. But some players may let slip little gems as they move on from the league.

Not many of them requested a trade, but Treloar, Grundy and Stephenson are the most notable omissions. Retirements will always happen and there were six of those. The delistings aren't a positive sign, either.

The 2 aren’t mutually exclusive.

This probably isn't the right thread for this, but this is disgusting.

That said, this article in The Age didn't strike me as particularly relevant.

He'll be drafted on his apparently special footy ability - his background means nothing, unless he is not allowed to play on the sabbath.

It's nothing to do with Collingwood but Joffa Corfe has admitted a guilty plea for one count of sexual abuse of a minor.
It's sad to see him in the Herald Sun with all of his Collingwood gear and gold jacket alongside such articles.

Collingwood icon Jeffrey “Joffa” Corfe has admitted sickening sex acts against a 14-year-old boy – but he is set to avoid jail for his crimes.

Corfe, 62, pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16 – a rolled up charge involving two acts with the boy at his Coburg home on January 29, 2005 – in Victoria’s County Court on Wednesday.

He had previously denied the allegations when charged in May last year and a trial date had been set for next year.

But he entered his guilty plea after a series of secret hearings were held last week, where he applied for a sentencing indication if he was to admit the single charge.

On Friday, Judge Gerard Mullaly accepted submissions by Corfe’s lawyer Christopher Terry that a wholly suspended jail term would be an appropriate punishment.

A gag order prohibited the Herald Sun from reporting the details until today.

The court heard Corfe – one of the Pies’ most recognisable supporters and former cheer squad leader – was aged 44 at the time of the offending.

He used an alias and said he was 30 years old when he began communicating with the teen via email and MSN messenger on January 16, later inviting him to his home to have oral sex.

“Do you still like getting head and what do you look like, champ?” Corfe wrote in one message to the boy.

He handed over his address to which the boy decided to attend.

The court heard the complainant was “significantly traumatised” by the offending.

Mr Terry had asked for a “merciful” sentence, citing Corfe’s poor health, “dislocated upbringing” and his contributions to society and lack of further offending.

“The law is to protect young people … because their vulnerability can be exploited,” Judge Mullaly said.

Corfe appeared via videolink from Queensland, where he now lives, for the 9am arraignment.

His bail was extended, but he was told he would have to fly to Melbourne for a pre-sentencing hearing in February, where his victim wanted to eyeball him in court and read out a statement on how his crimes had impacted his life.

Disagree, it would be a community based team, similar to Geelong and a short distance away from Melbourne.

It will be different and not for everyone but there will be a whole town behind them and they don't have the high living expenses of somewhere like GWS.

Tassie has some serious talent, but it gets lost through lack of pathway. Victoria has so many ex-AFL players and quality coaches in their junior ranks. Over time Tassie would develop this and you would see an increase in the talent coming out of Tassie.
