I didn't really mean the stoppage, although he's still doing a lot of the. I more meant the general play. Against the Dees it was more half back because we couldn't move it out of defence, but generally, he's staying in the actual midfield and most of his possessions are there - distributing it to the forwards and runners. I think he covers very similar territory to what centremen used to, back when that was a different position to the followers.

Against the Dees he was starting midfield though and just in the defensive half because of their forward half dominance.

Picking up a HH who be epic for us whether we pay 700k or 900k, if we do then we can fit him in. I rated him very highly ( note I don’t think he is a 900k player but if that’s what it takes then so be it )

You can’t pay someone like HH 900k. It’s Grundy 2.0. It then limits us elsewhere. He’s a good player but hardly worth that

It's not harsh and it's not true.

We have better mature aged talent.

Pies can't go back and change what happened can only move forward and hopefully get some luck, It's our time now we need to strike this year.
They have Rozee and Butters who are both older than the daicos brothers who are easily the equal of those 2. Drew, Farrell, sinn and McEntee have been around a few years and are far from stars. Bergman is leaving and that's about it for their youngsters . We have players equal or better than the likes of Drew etc and all around the same age. I think our window is only just opening and we will be in it for the next 5 years.

I don’t remember suggesting he’ll be delisted? I also don’t think he’s got glaring deficiencies like say a W Kelly.

I don’t believe he has a future at Collingwood because he’s undersized, not blessed with pace, a shaky decision maker and I don’t think he’s a great fit for our game style. Murphy shares a few of those traits and sets himself apart with his competitiveness. Two into maybe one doesn’t go perhaps even none if HH comes in.

He’d be a good fit for Brisbane, WC, Sydney and GWS if they lose HH, but if Collingwood do offer him a 1 year deal like Bianco it would be career suicide to accept it.
Sorry - I assumed from your tone that you thought he’d be delisted.
I actually don’t feel as negative about him. He’s taller and bigger framed than Murphy, with a more effective and neater disposal. His Anzac game showed he can intercept mark, and his point pass to Ginni I50 in the heat of the contest showed composure and maturity.
Agree that he may choose to seek greater opportunity elsewhere, which would be understandable but nonetheless disappointing.

Last year there was obvious need and spot for Mitchell. This year there isn’t for Parish.

You can always use an extra quality midfielder. Before the start of the 2024 season Pendles will be 36, Sidey 33, Adams 30, Mitchell 31 in May. To be clear, I think he'll re-sign with Essendon and I don't necessarily want him, would prefer to see Draper, Macrae, Allan and Harrison getting those opportunities. I just disagree that signing Pendles gives any indication of our potential interest.

Only played about a game and a half for us up forward - he was mediocre at Melbourne though, despite the incredible highlights making him anything but mediocre. Interesting that old article saying that the original plan was forward/wing. I think Jezza could have been a game changer as a wingman. Current wing is very much about runners, but I do think a case can be made for an aerialist as so much is about those down the line contests
I’m led to believe that they might be experimenting with this role for when he returns. Reason is they think his last kick inside 50 will be damaging

Josh is 14 months older than Rozee and 16 months older than Butters.

Not much but probably 1-1.5 seasons of football ahead in terms of development.

The more professional the game and its junior development pathways become, the earlier the most talented players contribute at an elite level. Just look at Nick and JHF for example.

So in reality while you had to really build up 7-10y in advance for the right list profile and when you hit the draft hard, these days it matters a lot less. You can kill it on one or two draft nights and you’ll reap the benefits within the next 5 years (eg Port).

I’m a lot less worried than I used to be looking at our age profile and number of youngsters. With elite junior talent able to contribute within two years (currently just the very top does but guarantee you it will becomes very common like it is in global sports codes), and free agency providing positional top ups there are a lot more avenues to success than there used to be.
Plus the ease of movement of young players which even we aren’t immune to with the loss of Henry. Not suggesting it’ll happen or if it’s even the right play for us, but a 2024 off-season of say Callaghan and McDonald announcing they want to join the club would instantly put us at the head of the queue in terms of young talent.

I wouldn’t say I’m particularly negative towards him (I do get that angle though) because he’s a handy 10th defender on our depth chart I’m just not particularly bullish either. Murphy gets the nod due to his competitiveness and I’d add that Ruscoe’s ball use might be neat, but it’s not consistent.

Now that Murphy’s entrenched, Howe is set to return, there’s green shoots with Frampton and Markov is in the best 26 I don’t see a path into the best 22 without injury. Trying to break into the league’s best defensive group is always a challenge so yeah it’s no slight on him.

IMO, his opportunity was early 2022 when Murphy, Maynard and Roughead were missing, but we chose Madgen which was the right call. Unfortunately Ruscoe’s game in early 2022 had a whiff of “I’ve got this” about it after he’d had a decent back end of 2021 and it set him back. It’s sometimes all about windows and like Madgen with his contract trigger I think Ruscoe has missed his at Collingwood.
