I'm somewhat surprised (disappointed) all the recruiters (bar 2) don't agree to meet at another secret location, leaving Doddo and Hackie at Marvel stadium trying to do Ess/Gee and Gee/Ess only deals and one-up each other!

My exact words were “they’d likely get pick 1”. Nothing certain or automatic in that. It’d come down to what the panel recommends, but 1 thing I am sure of is that it would be way better than pick 18. The tenure and salary would demand it just as they justified the changes to the rule.

Saying they'd "likely" get pick 1 is pretty definitive, just as much as my opinion that they'd "likely" still end up with pick 19.

There is no reason to think the committee would give the premier a free pass to a higher first round draft pick no matter the circumstances, as it is again contrary to the whole equalisation system that the FA compensation arrangements are meant to support and the outcry from every other club (and bad press) would be significant.

The fact that clubs have learned to some degree to run with the ball is irrelevant, indeed the scuttlebutt coming out of AFL HQ is that they are looking at tightening up the process and cutting off some of the loopholes that clubs have been exploiting since the system came into being.

The reason I said Haynes, was that I saw something on Zero Hanger suggesting that GWS might bundle a juicy draft pick with Haynes as a salary dump.

That's old news, recent reports have indicated that he is staying with GWS and that they aren't interested in doing salary dumps, I'd guess because they may have secretly managed to get buy in from the playing group to take one for the team on salaries in the short term given how close they got to a GF and how good their prospects are looking now.

it’s a forest vs tree’s scenario, the objective should be to improve the list not win the trade on paper, it’s how dodoro ends up missing out on bobby hill, bravo Adrian you won trade week, we won the flag because of him, at least he didn’t overpay I guess.
Yea but this sort of thinking is also how you end up paying two firsts for Beams and Treloar.

No it's not, it's an opinion. Nobody can know because it's a discretionary process. I'm certainly not a member of the panel. Your denial of it because of the Hawks ladder position is just fanciful. When has something like that ever stopped the AFL? They created the discretionary process for a reason, the poor compensation return Hawthorn got for Franklin was that reason because there was an outcry about how poorly they were compensated.

Length isn’t factored in.
The only things considered are age and avg. income for the contract….no matter how many years it is.

Also, interesting side note (and this is more a question), the last part of the rules say the committee can intervene….but are they allowed to recommend anything outside the bands? Or are they constrained to work within the bands, but flag things where they think it’s wrong.

Your right, it's the age of the player. Was thinking that in Franklin's case tenure was a consideration of the approval. AFL imposed a special caveat on contract impact against TPP over the full 9 years regardless of him playing the 9 years.

I'm surprised that the media hasn't made a bigger deal about the Geelong and Mackie shitshow. Here's a club that has stayed towards the top for a decade by topping up their list annually with players wanting to go home or looking for success.

Now Ratugolea has asked to go to Port TWICE in two years and they are saying no. Pick 24 is actually great for them for a player that was playing VFL. Chris Scott on 360 said that key defenders are worth too much and they want to keep him but last year with Ollie Henry the commentary was how Collingwood were mean because we were stopping a home sick kid go home to play with his brother. And then traded out the picks that would have got the deal done which meant it nearly didn't get done. But in the end Mackie got his way and the thing that pissed me off the most was his cocky snarky stupid face thinking he was the trade messiah at the end.

So I'm really hoping Port win this one even though they are a bigger threat to us next year.

I hope Port lose out and Ratugolea moves in the pre-season draft - no-one bar North or Hawthorn wins then and maybe Mackie will then come in for criticism.
