The big difference is that their oldies were their best players, whereas Moore and Jordy should still be at their peak for a while and Nick isn't even there yet.
Their Pendlebury lite also retired, full strength Pendles is still going for us. Their second level players largely disappointed. That's a risk for us if our older players drop off a cliff, Pendles, Mitchell, Elliott, Howe, Sidebottom, the main ones to be wary of. I think they have another year and that we have enough around them if there is some drop off.

Murphy is the worry, so hopefully we add some insurance there. Mitchell a concern if he drops off or misses games, will need Macrae to come on without Adams. Schultz covers any potential drop off from Elliott.

We just need Allan and Macrae to step up and become regulars next year.

We really need try to get a combined 30 games plus next year out of the likes of Mcinnes, MaCrae, Ryan and Allan to regenerate on the run, allowing the likes of Pendles, Sidebottom and Elliott spells during the year.

That starts next year when we'll likely see WHE, Sidey and Howe retire. Pendles may leave, too.

We have cap space for next year. We have state leagues/mature agers. Not too concerned, really.
If we had a choice of going for another flag next year with all we have or taking a more conservative route to plan for the future and maybe not prioritising contending in 2024, I’d prefer we have a red hot crack at B2B.

Keep an eye on McCreery and even Hill having spells in the middle too.

I think the cats lacked a bit of hunger after their flag success. We may suffer the same fate, but the coaches will be all over any premiership hangovers
Hawkins started and finished the year injured, they missed Henry for a lot of the year in defence and had a fair amount of other injuries and issues. Not sure it was hunger so much as personnel issues. They could easily bounce back and play finals next year, particularly if Hawkins is managed well. Lots of people said he’s cooked but he still kicked 49 from 20 games this year, playing on 1 leg for the first 6 weeks of the season.

I don't think we were gonna use it anyway, it'll be close to pick 40 by the time the compo picks add in
No it wont. By the time the draft hits that point there will be close to as many picks in the 20’s burned as there is Academy/FS players taken.

Yeah. Unless someone pops up in the next couple of days, I think we might get a state League kpd to train with us with a view to SSP.

Mitchell will be fine for another year. I was worried about him late in the season but I'm pretty confident that was due to a big training block as he was super in the finals.

But even if he isn't we've still got a good midfield.

  • Contacted Schultz management earlier in the year around a move next year. Schultz requested a trade due to personal reasons and family last week and management approached Collingwood.
  • Schultz will play a number of roles for us. Pressure key to his recruitment. Coaches will figure out how he fits in.
  • Ginnivan has not had any enquiries. Not seeking to take calls.
  • Scott Selwood may move to Brisbane due to his partner being from Queensland.
  • Unlikely to have more movement. No players we are chasing. Never say never.
  • Sydney opener but he's not quite sure about things.
  • Not disappointed by Adams' move in a professional environment. Feels it is similar to Schultz given both were under contract.

Interesting way he phrased Ginni’s position

Spose if we happen to go back to back next year none of that will really matter will it? We’ll all just have grins on our faces wider than a Cheshire Cat.

We’ll know this time next year one way or another.

It's a big opportunity for Macrae and I hope he grabs it with both hands.

Allan I'm really hopeful for but its no given he'll feature heavily. He's still developing. Avgs. 19 disposal in the VFL which is a great foundation but doesn't demand selection either.

We need to improve the list. Surely losing Adams and replacing him with Schultz isn't enough to keep us in the top 2 (guaranteed home finals) in 2024.

Why not? Adams played HF most of the year, and Schultz is a better version of that. In terms of the minutes Adams spent in the middle, you could have a number of the younger guys provide that?

I’m more concerned about the intercepting backmen depth

They absolutely under achieved this year and probably wasted a year in their prime, which is an unbelievable thing to say given how long they've been up for.

But at the same time we had no ruck etc for stages this year lost Elliott for a while, Sidebottom, etc. and just kept on keeping on. Cheers to depth 🍻

Any side will do well if they have a good run with injury. So assuming that the Cats have their fair share of injuries, then I'm not bullish on the Cats - take a look at their last game, their best two players were Menegola and Smith - neither at the club any more. They are still heavily reliant on their older players (Hawkins still finished in their B&F Top 10). I watched their VFL team against the Pies and their best player that day was George Stevens - he's not even on their list! I don't see much talent coming through and improving their side, I can see the Cats finishing bottom 4 next year.

Agree - it’s not often talked about the adversity this group got through earlier in the season, no ruckman for 6 weeks and the strain that put on structure etc

Still think he’ll have something at play here GW. Whether it’s keeping on an eye on the remaining OOC players and stealing one as a DFA, or making a late play with a pick at someone left field (probably left field for us but on the radar for GW and the club for a while).

48 hours left - a lot can happen in that time

We almost have to as we need to take three selections minimum and we don't want to upgrade rookies unless we have to.
I think we'll upgrade a rookie via our 3rd pick (Pick 80). That will allow us to make a selection in the Rookie Draft or the SSP.

Sydney are the only ones who count that have really improved their team so far.
