Mal Michael was not fringe, 8th in Copeland one year, but he became a much better player at Brisbane

Bulked up, became more daring, integral to Brion's triple premiership
He looked really promising but then had a heap of injuries and an attempt to turn him into a forward. Then shipped out.

I think just on principle you don't back a Ken Hinkley coached team to do much

TBH I don’t pay that much attention to other coaches - but Port fans seem to hate their own coach. Why is that? Been there too long for too little success - or is there something else?

As far as I can tell it's that and Hinkley being an "outsider" that they see as being protected by the media class.

No Melbourne and Carlton in top 4 contention for 2024? The Demons appear to be imploding, following a trajectory that started in mid-2022 when Melksham punched May in the head.😳

But Carlton? I’m hoping this year was a false dawn for them - but they do have some players.
I would be genuinely nervous if I were a Dees supporter. They feel like they need a Collingwood 2021 type reset, but until they drop they’re every chance to compete again. From my perspective they’re in that pack of 8-10 clubs alongside us, the Dogs and the 5 interstaters I mentioned that the top 8 will come from. I excluded those two because in the context of us and top two they aren’t as important as the interstaters.

I think SR is bang on though the academy system needs adjusting. It only gets worse once Tasmania enters and fixes their talent pathways because one club having priority access to football heartland is going to last 10 minutes before it’s challenged. It’s not the ideal solution, but I’d change the Vic setup to align Coates league teams directly with AFL clubs then allow 1 pre-draft priority signing per year per club. Roll that out league wide and have all clubs adhere to the current NGA rules.

For a practical example it’s a shit year for us if we were aligned to Oakleigh (the Knights has always made more sense to me 🤷‍♂️), but it would mean Smith next year. GC on the other hand get Walter, but miss Read, Rogers and Graham because they receive a bid pre 40. I bet under that system the clubs invest to grow the pathway and we aren’t left with drafts ending in the 50’s…

Madge hadn't been delisted at this stage last year. And Kelly hadn't been re-signed. Unless they've signed, it could still go either way for Begg and Kelly.
With only picks 19 and 39 and having already delisted or lost half a dozen players. I can't see another two delisted.
Being Begg and Kelly.

Schultz so far the only in.
Dunno mate

I’d like to see more dash and rebound from IQ at half back. I reckon he could break games open for us.
Q's developments has been great, yes some more dash and rebound would be great but often looking after the oppositions best small you are a bit limited in getting off the chain

It's a bit like using Darcy as a marking target coming out of defence - would love to see it - but we keep those guys in place so that we can stop goals on turnover.

Might cop a bit of heat for suggesting him - but I would personally have Aiden Bonar across the summer as a potential SSP signing. The hype around this bloke heading into his draft was pretty big (188cm big body mid who could go forward), and he put in some very impressive performances for GWS as a young mid that could hit the scoreboard, but was squeezed out of that midfield (as many have been over the GWS journey), and sent to North who bizarrely have tried to turn him into a KPD.

He's only 24 and imo has a heap of talent, and I wonder if through a mix of injury and poor development he might not have achieved what his ability allows him to. If a summer with our fitness crew and trying to rebuild him as the midfielder he was always meant to be, he could be an Oleg 2.0 in a role I think we are light on if we cop a few injuries (that being a big contested midfielder).

Smith is a gun. Averages 20 games a season and gets plenty of it, even when played out of position. He would be a massive get. Every chance to be a 300 gamer.
I agree, but 2023 was a negative blip in the Bailey Smith trajectory. Do contracts diminish in size if the blip continues.

One year is a blip and two years a decline. It’s a hard one because if it’s a blip then you’re getting a good one and his price is high this time next year, but if it’s a decline the price is low and you’re probably getting an unfulfilled talent.

I’m on a similar page to Sidey and thinking crazy Bevo is playing a role in their struggles. The Egan appointment is crucial for their 2024 chances and contract talks.

How smug is Mitch Cleary… pushing the Geelong angle at all costs… move over mate, the pies are in the market for Bailey smith and we are 10x the proposition geelong will ever be!
