There could also be the scenario where we liked him but in the 50-60 range and given the results from trade period and list spots we might think we get the 3-4 we want inside 40-50. Given this we’re unable to commit.

Yeah, I think the list spots probably played a part. And with less picks being used.

The Club had included Dib in training sessions & openly mentioned him on several occasions.
Obviously no guarantees ever…although most supporters probably felt he was going to be drafted with a late pick (sometime after pick 40).
No evidence or reason, just an assumption. There were other NGA prospects who weren’t given the same exposure or apparent opportunity as Dib, hence he was on the radar.
I was surprised as well.
Maybe we collectively ‘got ahead of ourselves’ on this one.
Draft day will be determined by the Hine/Wright draft board.

That’s my assessment on it and my feel is that it’s been a carefully considered decision rather than the sudden change of mind possibly influenced by a newly appointed coach hinted at by Spinny.

I guess the big positive for me was that I won’t need to read dream draft scenarios of Daicos, Dib, player x blah blah blah. I know it’s a reflection on me, but it ground my gears!

A tigers mate of mine reckons the pies end up with Derek Eggolese-Smith. I don’t know anything about him. Thoughts on him?

If they go that way it could explain the reduced interest in Dib

I've been hoping we get him since Last year (he was Delisted and redrafted by Richmond)

If there's 40 players better than Dib in the draft, I don't really care if we get him or not. I'm pretty happy with what we've been able to achieve. We got Krueger the tall forward we've been in desperate need of. We bolstered our midfield with Louie the Lipinski & we're getting arguably the best kid in the draft. All three fit the age profile for our rebuild & we haven't lost any of our best 22. We've done well

solid highlights! I'd be curious to know how a kid like this doesn't get drafted. All I can think of based on that package is that 188cm may not be tall enough for AFL if you don't have great athletic ability to compensate.

It's because Duval was playing suburban footy 3 years ago. He's only had 2 years in the SANFL but has played some excellent footy. I like Duval because he offers something a little different. A guy that can play back pocket on smalls but still intercept. Which means he can co-exist with the other interceptors and offers something different to our other small defenders.

Not Cox, he can't ruck. It would need to be Cameron and we backfill with a forward. Get a ruckman in the MSD

Cox definitely can ruck and has done so effectively in the past.

Prepare him in the ruck role rather than as a key forward and he'll do perfectly fine if called upon.

Imagine if Lynch does a Witts and ends up captaining Hawthorn. 🥵

To be fair they've had some pretty average types as captain at the Hawks either side of Mitchell/Hodge so it wouldn't be a surprise.

While I wish Lynchy all the best obviously I don't think he's getting to anything near Witts' level as a footballer.

Cameron too. I think they'd make a decent ruck/forward combo. I think they're both pretty good ruck forwards, but cop criticism because we don't have KPFs and thus they have had to be primary targets.

Don't know about that. If he can reproduce what he showed against Melbourne this year and be given the opportunity, at senior level to build on it, I think he could be pretty good.

Yeah saw that too. What’s the passageway from vfl to afl? They still need to nominate or we can upgrade? Guessing have to spend at least a year on vfl list before club can select for seniors?

Yep, Goldsack played 150 games almost on intensity and pace alone. That kid looked to have great hands too. Perhaps a bit heart in the mouth with the ball though.

Yeah it makes you wonder if with the step up in pace at AFL whether Duval would get caught, where he gets free at SANFL level. His kicking didn't look the cleanest ball strike but seemed to get where it needed to go, including some higher difficulty kicks. Kinda like Jonhson's used to. Still there are a few qualities to work with there: defense, speed, agility, intercepting and intensity. I'd take a punt in the rookie.

It was the decision making not skill execution that I thought was a bit of a concern in that clip. Seemed to take off and then go "shit what do I do now?"

Ben Reid. Nathan Brown. A long time ago, but he’s definitely done it.
He was also super keen on McDonald last year, and rated Zach Reid too.

There were rumours on here and ebnw (prior to the draft) the club read Hine had been tossing up between Naughton and Stephenson pre draft at our pick. If only...

We'd never have made the 2018 GF without Stevo and so if we're dealing in "if onlys..."

"If only" in the last 2 minutes Treloar didn't kick it straight to McGovern
"If only" in the last 2 minutes Langdon didn't give the ball straight back to Rioli so he could kick inside 50 for the winning goal

I still think Stephenson was a great pick - added pace and excitement to our club - and he should have delivered a flag - don't blame Hine

Whos knows whether we would of or not but one things for sure we lost and Naughton would of held us in much better stead moving forwards.

We'll need to find the next Naughton I guess. The 2022 drafts gonna be fun.

If Treloar’s money comes from us and is included in our Salary Cap then why would it matter to the dogs when it is paid?
So they pay less in the first couple of years, but carry most of his salary in the latter years of his contract.

Get it, "There will be every belief in the club that they can play finals with a bit of luck" is the sort of thinking that justified trading our 2021 R1 pick for two 2020 R2 picks - what's that pick worth now to GWS? I like optimism, but it comes to a point where we all need to be realistic - in all probability, a finals game in 2022 is absolute best case - planning on best case scenarios is fraught with danger as you're likely to make poor decisions, best to develop a strategy that is based on most likely scenarios and hold course. Considering Cox as a first ruck IMO, is junk insurance.
Very different scenarios, little correlation with what I’m saying.

Not sure he was blaming Hine for anything, and agree that Stephenson was a good pick at the time, but sliding doors. We didn’t get a flag and Naughton will be one of the premier key forwards in the comp for the next decade… 😕

What we pay him should have no bearing on how they structure their payments.

Maybe. No guarantee on that.
