Autopsy Collingwood: Where to from here?

Yep.

Oldest list is irrelevant to next year, as is the absence of a first round pick. Pendles is still best 22, and would likely be in any team. Sidebottom is still best 22 and, based on his last 4 weeks at least, would be in any team. Not sure who else you think is deeply valuable now that will decline next year.
So just because Pendlebury still best 22, you think that automatically means he will produce his same elite standards 30 weeks later at the age of 37?
Same thing could've been said about Sidebottom at the end of last year. He was still playing good football in 2023, only to slow down dramatically the following year. Might be in some ok form now, but what makes you so certain he won't slow down again 30 weeks later as a 34 year old?

It's easy to pick and choose individual players who are still going alright at an old age, but when your list is so heavily saturated with old players it can be hard to keep up. I know Geelong have made top 4 this year with an easy draw, but even they have shown clear signs of being too old to keep up with younger, fresher, harder running sides like the Bulldogs and St Kilda.

Again, even Craig McRae in a press conference has said Collingwood's age demographic is something that needs to be addressed, which makes it all the more confusing that all the old players including Mason Cox are likely to be retained.

Naicos is a fantastic offensive player but doesnt have a defensive bone in his body. Pulls out of contests, cant or wont take a contested mark and only runs one way. Its amazing what the highlight plays can hide in lots of peoples eyes, especially Collingwood supporters

I agree. It's not something that I said - maybe quote the offending poster (which I believe was a Carlton supporter).

Start ? Thats all you have
Who do you have in that team? Carlton has a list that has not been able to win a Premiership, is in decline and does not have one outstanding youth in their team. i would be more concerned about your list and their inability to perform when it counts. Your list had done nothing, absolutely nothing and you sit here criticising other lists. You have Walsh who is a stat padder who cannot impact a game (only 6 goals for the season), Curmow who gets stage fright in finals and big games and a heap of recycled hacks who are not up to Premiership football. Spend some time on your own insipid list.

We have 2 players over the age of 30, half the Pies best 22 is over 30.

Not even slightly comparable.

Dumbest post ive seen in months.

Your list is absolutely f**ked going forward. Dads Army group who are all past it, nobody coming through depth wise, no draft picks and Tassie coming in soon.

You bag our list and yet we are above you on the ladder you twit.

Blues are on the rise and while the Pies are plummeting and your excuses are laughable

More than 20 years of building and rebuilding to have a single year peak where you get on a run of 9 consecutive wins to finish 5th - so far behind 4th that your final home and away game is a dead rubber - fluke two finals wins by less than a kick, and fall well short of a genuine contender in a Preliminary Final.

Sad.

Carlton have a mediocre list that has been nowhere near contending in the past 10 years.

Collingwood meanwhile....

Nowhere near comparable.

'But Carlton's list is younger...'

Obsessed.

Percentage but.

Heā€™s got a spreadsheet of all Collingwoodā€™s wins over a given period and marked the ones that do and donā€™t count (hint: all the ones that are wins, are the ones that donā€™t count, because they arenā€™t by enough, or the other team scored too many points etc).

This is a man who would rather go four decades watching his team lose every week and claim that his team is great all the time because in one tiny pocket of excellence they hardly lost a final (and he routinely makes excuses for one of those that they did lose), than have the grace or spine to acknowledge other sides who simply had the consistency to make finals and win or lose them because they often made them when they werenā€™t at the peak of their powers.

He also talks down the margins by which other teams win finals as though it makes a lick of difference.

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

In 3 days we'll have 8 spoons between Carlton and Richmond since the turn of the century.

That's 33% of all spoons in that time shared between two clubs.

The next best from any club is two spoons.

No wonder their supporter bases are like peas in a pod....

I thought Pendles might decline this year. He hasn't. Sidebottom has barely changed this year compared to last, so not sure what you are talking about there.

Of course our age demographic needs to be addressed. But it needs to be addressed over time. As many have noted, our draft hand this year is awful. So we can't ditch half a dozen older players as well as the younger ones we don't believe will make it.

And we haven't really looked like we were run off our feet this year.

An easy draw? But we had to play the younger, fresher, harder running sides Bulldogs, St Kilda [and Hawthorn] twice. Plus the highly fancied Blues who were flying both times we played them. Then road trips to take on Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle and Gold Coast (unbeatable at NT) weren't exactly easy assignments. Only playing one of the 3 genuine easy beats (Richmond, NM, WCE) twice. Not an incredibly difficult draw. But it's a myth to say it was incredibly easy.

Backline has been all at sea this year. How much of that is due to aging players not getting back and defending? That and whispering one way player.

Part of the issue with having so many older players is that Fly isn't giving the younger players a chance to develop. Guess we can expect another 3 or 4 mature age recruits this year.

I could feel your desperation the moment you launched into a personal attack. Yes, we have heard it all before, just like in 20 and 21. You are fixated on age. It does not matter what age you are if you cannot play and that is Carlton's issue. They have a list of players that cannot play or cannot perform in big games. Oh, but our age demographic is right. How has that helped you? How many flags has it won you? You have the most over hyped, overrated, insipid list in the country. You also have the worst youth of any list hence why you have no players in the 22 and under side. 30 more years of pain for the Blues.

Excuses excuses yet again for your crumbling club. You have won 3 flags in seven decades ffs.

I know you are hurting but get used to it šŸ™‚

And by the way, Happy 30th Year Premiership Drought for 2025 and Happy Birthday to Adrian Whitehead (Your Youngest premiership player) who turns 50 next year. i really think Carlton supporters think the 70s and 80s are modern era. A club that hasn't won a flag for just on 30 years is trying to bag club who won last years flag about lack of recent Premierships.
