Autopsy Collingwood: Where to from here?

Where to from here ?
We will have to bottom out for a few years eg Hawthorn and stop giving away early draft picks,
The list is stacked with players 30 + old.
Its time to do the right thing.
Long Term Gain etc,
Would also like to see a lot more development in the reserves also.
Many Collingwood people will disagree with me but it was bound to happen a bit like the Aussie Cricket teams when the greats retired.

Not sure about the Aussie cricket team reference, but good onya Marty
At last. Some sense from a pie supporter. What next?

I feel like this is still a pretty strong team, one that should be playing finals (fitness permitting):

Quaynor - Frampton - Maynard
Houston - Moore - Perryman

Cameron - Naicos - JDG
Jaicos - Crisp - Sidebutt

McReery - McStay - Elliot
Hill - Mihocek - Schultz

Bench from:
Pendles
Lipinski
Mitchell
Membrey
WHE
Howe
Cox
Parker
Allan

Plenty of experience in that group

Geelong nailed that one. Holmes is a gun We spudded it up with Macrae.
Collingwood were one of the few clubs that did very well out of the 2020 draft, unfortunately we’re not seeing great return at our club. Henry with 78 goals in two years elsewhere was an astute selection at 17 in a weak draft. I don’t particularly miss Ginnivan but he can play and we got awful return on his trade out.

McCreery is the only strong selection still with us. In a good draft, taking McCreery in the 40’s would be a solid pick but by comparison to this awful draft, he’s stunningly near enough a top 10 player.

Macrae I think is a write off, McInnes has one year to find himself in defence (where opportunities will come if he’s good enough) and the others are gone.

Collingwood’s ladder position in 2024 reflects where they are at as a football club.

The benefits of their inclusions will be offset by the decline of their aging players.

And that’s if they stay healthy.

Lose Darcy Moore and they could be challenging Richmond for the wooden spoon.

Darcy Moore is an appalling one on one defender per many Carlton supporters including you, so not sure how an injury would result in us becoming the worst side in the league.

Our 2024 result isn’t an accurate reflection at all. It was the 2nd finals miss since 2017, a period which has had a premiership, GF and two more preliminary finals. Big, strong clubs perform well and you can likely expect more out of Collingwood in 2025.

He’s the only AFL-level tall defender on your list, and given your lack of traditional key defenders he is structurally critical to how your team defends the ground.

For all the talk that Geelong don't take kids, they have taken 5 first rounders to the draft in the last 5 years.
Two of their most noted as Sam De Koning and Holmes.

2019 - Stephens (delisted), De Koning
2020 - Holmes, - then they got two others from that draft (Ollie, Bruhn) just two years later.
2022 - Clarke (May have been from the suns, but they still took the pick to the draft)
2023 - OSullivan

Top 30
2020 - Neale
2021 - Conway

We have laid down a foundation for the future. We have invested quite a bit in talls (Neale, Conway, O'Sullivan, Edwards) and it is still too early to tell for those guys and it could all go to shit from here but we have given ourselves a chance at least.

24 and under - first and second round draft picks plus others that have made an impact at AFL level:

2018 - Bailey Smith (Pick 7)
2019 - Sam De Koning (Pick 19)
2020 - Tanner Bruhn (Pick 12), Ollie Henry (Pick 17), Max Holmes (Pick 20), Shannon Neale (Pick 33)
2021 - Toby Conway (Pick 24), Mitch Knevitt (Pick 25), Ollie Dempsey (Rookie)
2022 - Jhye Clark (Pick 8), Oisin Mullin (Cat B Rookie)
2023 - Connor O'Sullivan (Pick 11), Mitch Edwards (Pick 32), Lawson Humphries (Pick 63)

Wellsy will have to roll the dice and try to pick up another Dempsey or Humphries with our late picks this year but if we have a poor year in 2025 at least we have all our 25 picks in hand and we can add to that group above.

I would say it is a completely different strategy to Collingwood personally.

Pies have no early picks so the draft is awful lol

You're looking at these players wearing blue and white glasses.

There's three decent footballers on this list - Max Holmes, Ollie Dempsey and Sam DeKoning.

The rest are somewhere between fringe players and list cloggers.

Every club has 3 decent footballers 24 or younger.

It's nothing to get excited about.

I'm not saying it is a premiership team but we can play to win and then pivot to pumping games into young players if it doesn't work out. Pies can't do that because they haven't got those top 30 pick players to fall back on and they have already traded out their 1st for next year as well.
