Autopsy Collingwood: Where to from here?

That too.

I've never heard a Collingwood supporter getting excited about guaranteed multiple number 1 draft picks in upcoming seasons.
Probably because Collingwood hasn't won back to back flags in almost 90 years.

Tigs had their time in the sun, the price they pay is going back down to rebuild to go again in the near future.

Give it a few seasons mate, all your old players will need replacing just as Tassie is starting up, fun times ahead.

Huh?

Your reason for Collingwood not getting excited about multiple consecutive years of number 1 draft picks is because we haven't won back to back flags for 90 years?

What was Carlton's reason in the 2000's AND 2010's? I don't recall any back to back flags for Carlton during those years.

Regardless, it's good to see the Richmond and Carlton folk having each others' backs. It's important for misery to have company.

Yeah, we were told that after 2021, in addition to the Grundy, Treloar and Stephenson (!) trade decisions.

And guess what happened?
Your older players were 4 years younger, 10 out of your starting 18 are over 30 you won't have the resources to cover them all, if you think you're going the Geelong route remember they hit the draft as well.

Firstly most of them aren't as important as they were. They have been pushed out of their star roles into role-playing positions.

Pendlebury = NDaicos (he has taken most of his midfield time)
Sidebottom = Lipinski, with Quaynor also playing his role and many more who can do it McCreery for example.
Howe = many players play his role (Dean, Crisp or Parker if we want run)
Mitchell = Perryman or Allan
Crisp = playing forever
Elliott = Schultz, Hill
WHE = fringe but why not Houston or Parker
Mihocek = more difficult but we have Membrey as a temporary backup or replacement for him and McStay.
Cameron has a few years but there are always rucks available if we need more next year. Also Smit or Condon are possibilities.
McStay has a few good years baring injury but Membrey is a good backup.

It's not about replacing stars because none of them are that any more, it's about replacing the roles they currently play. We have done that well over the last 2 years bringing in:
Hill
Frampton
Schultz
Perryman
Houston
Membrey

Who's to say we won't bring in 3-4 more next year.

We also have players we have drafted, who knows they might magically become AFL standard players.

I'm sure he will down as one of the greats of our game, more so than any of our current playing list
He hadn't even HEARD of the game at the age of 23

Yet here he is 10 years later with a premiership medal and unique highlights package

If only your current playing list had his heart and desire

Yep, our playing list has no heart or desire.

What's this 'best 22' rubbish.

Love to see where the line is drawn for our best 22, and what ranking the other 10 players (who would all be in Carlton's best 22) get...
Straight from ur own fans Fudgey. Don't really count the sub as we don't know what the AFL will do with rules for next season.

And are you meaning the next 10 players as in best 32? Your list is packed with spuds half of them wouldn't get a game anywhere in the league. Campaigners like McInnes 😂

Looks like a pretty good list on paper, doesn't it?

10 players. If we include Cox and Membrey, that's 12.

But then you look at the list of players in their absolute prime - 25 to 29 at the start of 2025:
J. Daicos
P. Lipinski
B. Maynard
I. Quaynor
D. Moore
J. De Goey
B. Hill
L. Schultz
B. Frampton
L. Sullivan
D. Houston
H. Perryman
O. Markov (to be Rookie drafted)

There's another 13 players.

Then we have the under 25's, with scope for improvement:
N. Daicos (scary, I know!)
B. McCreery
----------‐--------
C. Dean
N. Long
R. McInnes
F. Macrae
E. Allan
H. DiMattia
J. Ryan
W. Parker

Above the line, there's 27 players who could easily be in our best 22.

Then from the 8 young players below the line, one can reasonably expect a couple of them to be pushing up to stake a claim in Collingwood's best team by the end of the year - that's how the system works.

I have excluded Harvey Harrison, who has showed enough to give us confidence he's likely to be a long termer, though will be unavailable for most of 2025.

Sorry folks, Pies will be expecting to be regular premiership contenders for foreseeable future with this list, with some astute drafting and trading over the next handful of years.

'We'll let other clubs do the developing for us'.

That's how you can manage your list when you're a powerhouse.

If we look at Collingwoods list this is one way of breaking it down in terms of its AFL standard players (those that have played at the standard. I will highlight the older players. We need 7 players roughly on each line.

Key backs: Moore, Frampton, Dean
Versatile backs: Maynard, Howe
Small defenders: Houston, Quaynor, Markov

We look like we have the backline covered for the next 3 years at least with those players. We also have a few other players who have played limited games that may get to the standard Eg: Parker, Jiath, Ryan. Overall the backline looks good although we could use an upgrade on one lock down KPD.

Midfield: NDaicos, DeGoey, Perryman, Mitchell, Crisp, Pendlebury, J Daicos, Sidebottom, Cameron, Cox

This line looks the weakest in terms of older players, however the playing minutes of those older players in the midfield have decreased a lot over the last few years. We also have a lot of backup in this area that I have not included players like Allan, Long, McCrae and Sullivan are at least handy backup if shit hits the fan.
Overall we need to find 1-2 more solid midfielders to replace Pendlebury, Mitchell and Sidebottom. Perryman looks like the midterm replacement if not this year then certainly 2026. Allan looked a star for the 1 game he played in there against Melbourne but it's only 1 game so you can't make any major calls on him yet. Overall the midfield looks good for the short to medium term. But we need to find at least 1-2 more either internally or externally by 2027.

KPF: Mihocek, McStay
Versatile Forwards: Membrey, Johnson, WHE
Small forwards: Hill, Schultz, McCreery, Elliott

You could argue that this area also needs some work with Cox playing forward alot, along with Mihocek, Elliott and WHE (mostly). It an area that is missing the most backup as well although you could probably place a range of players up forward from the midfield or backline to cover in this area. Eg Howe has done this at times. Harvey Harrison looks like a player although he is injured at the moment so I won't count him.
Overall we need 1 KPF to replace Mihocek in the next 2 years and then probably 1 more in the next 3-4 years to replace McStay. This is Overall our weakest area so no doubt we will target this area in the draft and the next few years in the trade period. We have a few potential rucks that may or may not come good to replace Cox. Cat B player Codon at 212cm looks the most likely if he comes over.

That's correct, as evidenced by 0-60 in a final, they are flat track bullies and downhill skiers

Now back to the thread topic, Pies in great shape for next year , beyond that who cares, can only play one year at a time

Great analysis.

The inconvenient truth for supporters of other clubs who want to see the back of us, we're in good shape for the short to medium term.

I expect we'll contend for 3 of the next 5 flags, allowing for a down year (as we saw in 2024, and a near miss).

What was the overriding emotion you felt when you wrote out that team?

Fear or jealousy?

And at what stage did you come to the realisation 'Shite, this is actually an extremely strong team'?
