ps David Cloke far better sorry, but I understand your point.
David Cloker was a warrior in the ruck and around the ground for us but he never succeeded as a forward like he did at Richmond. A Rocca did better at CHF for Collingwoodf as did Travis. Not that they were better footballers over their careers but if we are talking just Collingwood David Cloke can't get near any cvombined forward line IMO.

Greening did enough.
And he was stopped in his absolute prime....his next 3-5 years would have set him apart from just other AFL Elite.
He was the Bradman of AFL....and just as Bradman had to be stopped by bodyline....so was Johnny Greening.
1977 grand final - we coulda had Greening as a mature star and Carman in his prime.

For me, it's Buckley v Swan.
Both Brownlow medallists.
Buckley, 260 games in B&W, Swan 258 games in the B&W. Close.
Buckley 7 times AA, Swan 5 times AA.
Buckley 263 goals in the B&W, Swan 211 goals in the B&W.
Buckley Premierships - 0, Swan Premierships - 1
International representation, Buckley - 2, Swan - 2.
Copeland, Buckley - 6, Swan - 3.

Stats and damn stats.
How do we seperate them?
Well for me, it's this....
Buckley -Brisbane Lions - games 20, goals -21.

Sorry Bux, but you ain't a Collingwood player for life. Not your fault, but it gives Swan the win.

Flame away.
Swan averaged a little over 20 disposals in 3 Grand Finals, far below his home and away average, more than 10 disposals off his norm.

Buckley prepared himself like no other so when the real heat came he didn't disappear or drop off like fun luvin Swanny did.

Bucks by a lot.

With all due respect in all finals he played Swanny averaged 26.65 touches and over a goal a game. Thats more average possessions AND average goals in finals than Chris Judd and Gary Ablett who are his closest contemporaries.

However I do think Buckley was a better player.

Yeah but the GF is the big stage and he failed miserably by his own standards. And those stats would have been even worse without the replay route.

In the draw he had the most clearances on the ground despite us getting pasted in the ruck.

In the replay he had the most clearances on the ground and was our leading tackler as well.

In 2011 he got tagged out of it by Ling but that game was lost in the coaches box not on the field.

You can't argue he performed in GF's when he was over 10 disposals off his own pace, and we both know that's because the tempo goes up and any lack of preparation or unprofessional off field lifestyle choices will be shown up... and they were

Ironically compared to his career stats compared to GF's

In GF's Swan has a 17% drop in possessions.
In GF's Swan has a 4.3% increase in contested possessions
In GF's Swan has a 224% increase in tackles
In GF's Swan has a 178% increase in clearances.

Granted its only a small sample size but the numbers don't lie......

Career includes the first few seasons and poor form seasons that drag the average down, it's a disingenuous stat when the guy was getting 40 disposals every other week during the period in question and suddenly drops to 20 when it matters

He didn't play on cameron Ling who is easily the best defensive mid of all time every week either....

Buckley had no problem winning a Norm Smith in a losing side against the best in a generation, stop making excuses for him, he'd be the first to say he let himself down

And deep down we both know if Swanny had Buckley's application he would have been a triple Brownlow medalist... but we forgave him because he's a larrikin and we love him... but that won't ever change the numbers on the biggest stage

Sorry mate but the comparison is mute. Daicos is "DaVinci" whilst Buck's paints houses. One was the most consistent accumulator and lovely long kick the other was a pure footballing genius. I loved Buck's self assurance and his work ethic was unquestionable....but Daicos could see things on the field (opportunities) that players like Bucks just couldn't see. Maybe if Buck's hammies hadn't restricted his move forward later in his career we may have seen more of his "pure" ability but as it stands he was one of the first "big" midfielders and a lovely kick. Daicos was the best small forward of the last 50 years.
