Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

You do realise that there is an American football league, i.e. gridiron league, here in Australia.

No doubt our American friends are frantically fapping at the news that 40 expats are running around a paddock as proof that 'their' game is going global too.

yes, and with NFL Europe they are to a certain extent.

I knew a guy who represented Australia in baseball. He went on and got a contract overseas. Was pretty good too. But unknown here. Look at Jason Dunstall. Virtually unknown in his home state, but what a magnificent contribution he was able to make in the VFL.

Sure, there are plenty of globally played games that don't have to brag about being a "World Game".

As for soccer being world game, look at the maps on the FIFA site, it is popular in Europe and South America and a rabble everywhere else ... does that really constitute a "World Game". Yet it is the closest thing to it, so it can generate the hype.

None of us (except for soccer fans) have delusions of global domination. All we want to see is for the game to achieve a wider appeal, which to a certain extent it is doing.

AFL vs World Cup

After last night and seeing the euphoria that has swept the nation after Australia won 3-1 i cant help but feel slightly concerned about which sport has the ability to captivate people dancing in the streets, flares going off are not scenes ever associated with AFL and i think Australia is getting a taste for the excitement soccer has to offer. I asked myself if Australia were in the world cup final and it was on the same time as the AFL grand final which would i watch and i am leaning towards the world cup. Does anyone feel these are dangerous times for the AFL?

Re: AFL vs World Cup

The only people getting paranoid about all this are AFL folk. I wonder why that is..you know thinking its the best code in the world and all that and having the biggest bunch of non accepting fans the world over.

Other codes in Australia are working with the world cup and not against it. But suprise suprise AFL is shaking in their jollimont shoes.

Easy,

If the Adelaide Crows were playing in the AFL grand final then I would be at the game and consequently watching the AFL but if it was anyone else playing I would not care to watch it as a world cup final only comes around every 4 years.

I would not miss that opportunity to watch my country play in the world cup final

Hmm...bit of a difference here. Soccer World Cups are every 4 years...Australia hasn't been in the World Cup for decades......we won a game in the World Cup. Of course people are going to be excited. However, once it's over and we have been thrashed the planets will realign and AFL will be back in the spotlight :thumbsu:

Re: AFL vs World Cup

Also die hard soccer fans are suggesting it be called football in Australia. Why then is the national side called the 'Socceroos?'

Cleary you would do both. They will never clash. One is in Sept and the other in the middle of the year to suit the seasons in the Northern part of the world.

Soccer at World Cup level, with Australia playing, will creat a great atmosphere. But Soccer in this country will always be the 4th Code. There is simply too much money everywherre else.....and no where near enough money in the game in Australia.

i would be shocked if anyone in at AFL house would be concerned at all!!

b/c australians have this knack of trying to name their sporting teams. Its downright embarrasing and smacks of trying to be american - again.

And its an 80s' thing. Some where in that horrible decade some uninspired ad man decided that its a good idea to give all our sporting teams a name that relates to our wild life.

Its bloody embarrasing to be honest.

I understand that but if Australia make ith through to the second round it will be huge. The thing is World bup qualification takes 4 years it starts soon after the world cup, if Australia do solidly in this years final then their profile will lift, they will play more international friendlies against more high profile opposition and people will follow it. There is a reason this game is the the worlds most popular sport and deep down Australia has always wanted to be apart of it.

Re: AFL vs World Cup

AFL has zero to be worried about.
I am excited about the world cup, as it is an event that comes along every 4 years, and it is awesome to see the Socceroos in it and performing well!!!!! 3-1 Magnificent.

However, i would rather visit my wifes grandma in a smelly nursing home, than go watch whatever the Melbourne team is have a gripping 0-0 draw against the Central Coast Cats (or whatever they are called) in the scummy A-League.

This is why so many pockets of australia is filled with mediocre simpletons. When its people like you who embrace mediocrity and think "ohh how grouse they named the team afta our kangas - grouse"

Re: AFL vs World Cup

You are right, the A league doesnt compare to the AFL at the moment but look where Soccer was 5 years ago and look where it is now. Anything that makes such large gains in such a short time potentially is a force to be reckoned with. Whether Soccer is a flash in the pan or not is yet to be seen and only time will tell however the A league will be bigger this year as a result of the world cup it will be bigger again. It just concerns me that the AFL is taking a complacent stance on the issue and just continuing on their merry way. It is true there is only so much money in this country and most of it is in NSW which is where FFA is targetting. The AFL cannot afford to concede ground in the states where AFL is not the premier code.

Re: AFL vs World Cup

I find it insulting that you can simplify so many of the nations problem into a two sentence post on big footy.

What is your suggestion buddy. Whinge like a cut cat and provide no alernative. Typical of the small minded person you are. The biggest moment in Australia Soccer and all you want to do is cry about a name the team as had for 20 plus years......Maybe a focus on what happened last night......rather than something so trivial.

mention the term Socceroo to anyone and they know who you are talking about.......Marketing people call it branding.

Re: AFL vs World Cup

Once in four years the world embraces soccer. Give it a year and some ridiculous riot at a racially-based club match will open peoples' eyes to soccer and the inherant violence that accompanies it.

All will be well.

Im not endorsing the violence but that violence is a result of the tension and passion evoked from the game. A game that can push someone to violence obviosly means something to somebody. This is the attidtude that will cost the AFL 'All will be well' yeah lets just lay low until it all blows over. That was Chamberlain's idea when he gave Germany Poland, yeah give them a bit and it will be fine. Unfortunately some things dont blow over
