Interesting. Listen to podcasts but never troubled any of the non-club sanctioned North ones.

Any recommendations? Past episodes of note?

I’d only recommend the yearly chats with Kingy. They’ve had Rick on as well once or twice which is good, but it’s negated by the rest of the crew.

Dean Vasic’s pod is good at times. Depends who’s on.

I’m only really interested when there’s insights on that escape me. Rick gives you that. The rest is just rambling sadly.

This is the story as best as I can recall. It was the year 2000, and Peter Bell was coming off an All Australian season (and went close to a Norm Smith Medal in the grand final win). He was having an even better season in 2000 and went on the win the Syd Barker Medal that year. But he was playing uncontracted. He and his fiance wanted to buy a house but his bank wouldn't give him a mortgage without a contract. So he went to the club and asked for a contract on the same terms that he was being paid. The club (Greg Miller) dragged its heels. As the season dragged on, the situation for Bell changed as his fiance's father became terminally ill. There was strong pressure from the family to move home (Perth). West Coast and Freo somehow heard about the situation and started circling. Offers came in. Bell is a really loyal bloke and he felt he owed Denis Pagan so he went back to Miller and begged him to put him under contract. Miller low-balled him. Meanwhile, the WA clubs were outbidding each with what Bell describes as ridiculous money. He agreed to terms with Freo. Finally, Miller came to see that he was about to lose a valuable player and so he offered to match the Freo offer. Remember, Bell was prepared to sign for way less money just months earlier. Bell was so pissed off by this stage that no amount of money was going to convince him to stay, and so off he went. Miller then sent an email out to all the members explaining his side of the story and describing Bell as greedy. Bell has never forgiven him for that.

Interesting to hear that account.

Spoke to a player very close to Peter in the year after his departure and heard a very similar take. This player had also approached the club to rollover his own deal and was told (quote) "**** off". His words. The player mentioned the money Bell was offered at the time in a context of it being crazy money.

So can 2nd a lot of your story from a different source.

Fwiw Miller did far more good than bad at the club. Was a cowboy who shot from the hip and unfortunately burnt some deals like this one.

The trade he negotiated after losing Bell was actually exceptional:

Only Jess who came good but the deal could've been the rebirth of the club if the picks had all been nailed.

Whateley just used the word ignominious on SEN. What percentage of SEN's audience do you reckon knows what it means or could use it in a sentence?

Whateley using exclusive language is another example of his pretentiousness.

It was a good chat, he was very open and relaxed, almost like he was 12 beers in.
Funny thing was as the podcast went on he sounded more and more like Robbo

I thought Kingy sounded 3 sheets to the wind tbh. It was entertaining and reinforced his love for the club, but I'm not sure I got much else out of it.

Agree, he sounded a bit 1/2 cut but was coherent and interesting to listen too. Thought the f-bomb came across a little aggressive and should have been censored given I assume there are likely young kids listening in.

Same. I had it ready to go when I got in the shower & hit play & it disappeared.
I had a patch where I had to stop listening to it for a bit due to the overwhelming negativity (around the time of Luffy quitting etc). Started listening again when we beat Richmond.
It’s generally pretty good.

I have tried approaching many individuals to join me as me chatting on my own would annoy the listener and myself pretty quickly.
