The most bizarre thing about McGuire right now is the rise of his son.

Yes, nepotism. Not what I mean.

I cannot understand the way the other veteran journalists are trying to out do each other talking up how great “Xander” McGuire is. It is very Soviet.

BTW if your name is Alexander and you shorten it to Xander you might just be a ****wit.

The Jones issue and his "apology" was the lead story on 9News tonight.

Obviously Tilley wasn't happy and obviously nor were the Serbian community, who Jones offended. They were angry at the "joke" that everyone, without exception, saw as an embarrassing flop.

That's you Tony Jones. Chompers the flop.

Ed is the man! North Melbourne people should show him some respect. He’s always gone into bat for us. Plus, he’s never forgotten where he come from. A rare trait for someone worth a few hundred million.
The bloke who said we’re shaking his hand while we’re picking his pocket?

its true isnt it? He’s on the record more times than i can count suggesting we belong in the comp and big clubs should prop up the struggling clubs. Think whatever you like, if it wasn’t for people like Ed, we’d be in history books only

I spoke to him a couple of times when my kids played at Prahran. Always came across as a very genuine person. He’s got the same gift as Don King is said to have. When he talks to you, he makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room.

I agree with this. When I was on the Footy Show he made a point of speaking to people and making them feel comfortable. It was quite deliberately done, but he was very good at it.

Sure. But he's not on record suggesting that big clubs should give up any of their largesse so that we don't need to be "propped up". Ed and Collingwood know very well that that being a big fish in a big pond pays better than being one of a smaller number of larger fish in that same pond. It suits them for us to be small.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. They have more leverage when there are smaller clubs around to outclass and out resource. Who would go to Collingwood if every game was attended by 70k plus and every club had cashed up coterie groups taking care of you?

Plus who else are you going to get to work in developing markets and play the offbroadway timeslots.

We’re good for the ecosystem

They’re a self-fulfilling entity.

The AFL use them, and their fan base, through fixturing to maximise revenue.

Which is most beneficial to the suits that run the game.

It’s why the powers that be get so sour when ‘The Big 4’ aren’t performing.

It damages their bonuses.

They can't get 18 games a year at the MCG without North, Bulldogs, Saints, Melbourne etc taking the travel burden interstate.
They can't get double ups and guaranteed games against Essendon, Richmond, Carlton etc and avoid Fremantle, GC, GWS games at home without us to take up the slack.
They don't want to be travelling to Geelong multiple trips to WA, SA, QLD, NSW per year.
They don't want to be competing against West Coast etc and not have unique strength in their home market and a higher travel burden.
