Recent polling has suggested it’s not really a debate at the moment
That's what happens when living standards/income value get worse imo. You don't have as much time for moral quibbling, and people look for things to hang onto. One of those things, somewhat understandably, is a day that supposedly illustrates that we still have it good here.

It's always left a bad taste in my mouth. Sure, most of us are here because of colonisation, but I'm not going to rub it in their faces with '**** yeahhhh campaigner' behaviour and general boorishness. If I had my way we wouldn't have a national day at all, and instead appreciate being in the country on a day-to-day basis, but that's not how the human mind operates. There need to be special days and months for things

There’s be no NMfC

Nobody is proposing we all head back to ancestral homelands. The NMFC will still exist once we grow up and move on from jan 26th

For **** sake. Idiocy.

My take is simplistic. I am in favour of reinventing the day we celebrate our nation and moving the date. I just don't know what is acceptable to all sides of the discussion. I have discussed this with a few indigenous folk over the last few years and it seems nobody has a good solution. Move the date, no worries. Call it something different, no worries, but let's get on and do it. I understand the distress this causes some indigenous folk but not all. Some do not agree with moving the date. I'm confused as to how we resolve this and create something where all Australians can celebrate together. I just hope we can do it soon because the day now is becoming a platform for professional vandals and protestors.

Let’s just move on from artificially imposed patriot flag waving days.

If we can’t decide on one, there isn’t one that deserves to be celebrated.

I’m happy to change the date if that’s what the people of oz want.

Just that when you think about it, indigenous people’s pride in their culture from a minority point of view (still here, always was always will be Aboriginal land etc) is predicated on colonisation. Not to mention any indigenous person with mixed parenthood is protesting against their own existence.

Australia Day can mean different things to different people. That’s ok.

I also think there’s an anti progressive movement underway ( I’d like to call it anti woke but the word woke seems to trigger a lot of progressives).

I mean Dutton is about to become our next PM. That says a lot.

I’m aware that change the date doesn’t equal all none indigenous people leave the country. But it’s undeniable that by saying we wish colonisation didn’t happen, we are also saying we are happy to forgo all the magnificent things that happened because of it.

Including millions of individual people (indigenous and non indigenous) whose very existence required colonisation to occur

No it just makes you look like an idiot.

But once again, a certain ****wit percentage of this fanbase is triggered because some players expressed an opinion. Like clockwork.

Not a chance. They wont get the teal seats back and wont flip enough ALP seats. Worst possible outcome for the ALP will be a hung parliament.

Never in history as an incoming opposition leader won government after losing. Also, no one prefers peter dutton. You’re kidding

Where has the club said they wishes colonisation didn’t happen? Can you link me?

Cost of living pressures will see ALP vote drop

Anti progressive movement will add to that

And the greens won’t do as well

IMO

At no point did I talk about the clubs stance on the issue.

I was talking about the fact that if invasion day didn’t happen there wouldn’t be a sport called afl football and by extension an organisation called the North Melbourne Football Club.

So that negates the wishes of players expressing a hope that we remember the crimes and attempted genocide against Indigenous people?

And the impacts of this continuing to this very day?

Are you ok with conversations about that? Those convos can happen whilst you are bbqing if it’d make you more comfortable.

I get all that, ALP havent performed that well. Albo has been fairly flaccid and got a couple of things wrong, especially around the Voice.

However, for that last result to turn it would take Labor to implode, dont see it happening. If you listen to staunch political conservatives they dont see it flipping.

Those old Lib strong holds they wont get back from the independents. They’re gone and in ALP strong seats, mate. They may be a task too far.

No offence but you seem to be projecting what you think I’m saying as opposed to what I’m actually saying

- I’ve previously said Australia Day can mean different things to different people

- I’m not against a change of date if that’s what the Australian people want

- I haven’t said players can’t say what they want

- I’m not “celebrating” Australia Day, it pretty much looks like any other day for me.

- I’m not BBQing today, and I’m wondering if that’s an offensive stereotypical offensive comment.

Not really sure what your first point is getting at. If it's basically saying that without colonisation they have little reason to externally express their pride, then yeah, that goes without saying. Not sure what implications it has though.

Second paragraph is pretty much spot on. I think it's part anti-progressive movement, part media-orchestrated tidal wave. Think how hard a progressive/non-conservative party needs to work in order to attain power in the Western world vs. the conservative parties, which are generally absolute basket cases, objectively making the lives of the majority worse, but get away with their incompetence because the Murdoch web applies its spin to it at every opportunity. Then there are the people you know who were radicalised during COVID, and now hold some personal vendetta against every politician who was in favour of lockdown and their like, as if the lockdown was personal. At some point, the tidal wave becomes strong enough that the usual obstacles (critical thinking, logic, fact-checking) are simply wiped out. In the age of misinformation and predatory algorithms, I think the tide's only gotten stronger.

It's all pretty yuck. Gonna be an ugly next three years, especially as Dutton has less interest than Labor in addressing the main issues on peoples' minds; immigration, cost of living, and housing. Yell about how the other side isn't doing enough, receive a boost from your media cronies, be elected, do **** all, create a mess that the other side has to try and clean up, rinse and repeat.

lol I guess the shift to discussion of political implications is further evidence that your flag waving day has nothing to do with ‘unity’.

Do your flag waving virtue signaling all you want. I’m proud that my club says nah it’s more complex than that and we’re not doing it.

Deal with it.

Wouldn’t expect anything less from the people that run the club.

The best thing to do is sit on the fence.

As an aside, I think the influence of media in people’s viewpoints in these specific matters are overstated.

People consume the media that adheres to the world view these days.

Murdoch viewers/readers have already made their mind up. Just like readers of the age can’t help but nodding along vigorously at every Age editorial telling us how bad the world is for minorities etc. minds have already been made up at the ends of the spectrum and unfortunately there’s very little middle ground these days.

Just echo chambers of hate

The age lol. A bigger urgency is media literacy.
