As an aside, I think the influence of media in people’s viewpoints in these specific matters are overstated.

People consume the media that adheres to the world view these days.

Murdoch viewers/readers have already made their mind up. Just like readers of the age can’t help but nodding along vigorously at every Age editorial telling us how bad the world is for minorities etc. minds have already been made up at the ends of the spectrum and unfortunately there’s very little middle ground these days.

Just echo chambers of hate
Fair point, but not sure the Age is doing that anymore. They're very watered down. Guardian, maybe. At the bottom line, though, the progressive movement in general has lost steam and vaguely hateful bollocks is taking over. And maybe, at a grassroots level, it has itself partially to blame, with this ridiculous focus on DEI/gender stuff instead of worrying about the economic side of things, but we're veering right. Unmistakably. Consequences of that? In the eyes of the beholder, but I don't see it improving the country

I've never really understood the resistance to changing the date, even just by one day.

How do we even know that 200+ yrs ago they even got the date right, that the actual date didn't get lost or changed over the early years of colonisation, that a bit of damp air didn't smudge a 25 to look like a 26.
Or something equally as possible and dumb.

Is it going to make any difference changing the date?

I think thats the ultimate question.

As long as that big blue flag waves around people are going to yell at it.

The day for the indigenous people is a day of mourning, and celebrating on that day to them is like throwing it in their face.

I don't see how moving back a day affects US in any way, but it's a step toward making their lives better.

Wouldn’t expect anything less from the people that run the club.

The best thing to do is sit on the fence.

What’s exactly the stand that’s been taken? We’re deciding to not celebrate a day which plenty of other people choose not to celebrate.

It’s not exactly marching in the streets and lining up the romanovs is it.

The club has also rightfully platformed the thoughts of some indigenous players on the issue which is important.

At no point did I talk about the clubs stance on the issue.

I was talking about the fact that if invasion day didn’t happen there wouldn’t be a sport called afl football and by extension an organisation called the North Melbourne Football Club.

True

If there wasn’t a Big Bang none of us exists

You are heading down a Simpsons Episode

Not a chance. They wont get the teal seats back and wont flip enough ALP seats. Worst possible outcome for the ALP will be a hung parliament.

Never in history as an incoming opposition leader won government after losing. Also, no one prefers peter dutton. You’re kidding

You may want to check the polling DY on all of the above.

Albanese is the worst prime minister we have had, which is saying something.

I’m sick of being lectured to by the club on these political agendas. It’s Australia Day. No date has been changed, so stop guilting people (including indigenous) into not celebrating our one day of national pride we have.

I actually don’t care if we change the date either. But only if it is about celebrating Australia and a day of national pride. All of us together.

Not some divisive, twisted take on history from these urban grifters (many of whom have English ancestry) who cash in on shaming other Australians with welcome to country’s etc.

We are the lucky country and whilst historical injustices should be realised, it shouldn’t be constantly the centrepiece of every Australian celebration and we should be proud to acknowledge what the early settlers did to create it.

It certainly shouldn’t be our clubs responsibility to take hard line political views either way.

I’d just forget about it; the post was a trigger to see how many of us again would buy into the debate

Probably sitting back having another laugh at the shit show he’s created for the day

How miserable must it be daily pulling apart the faults of the Club; if it’s not training standards it’s the Captaincy, if it’s not the AFLW it’s our Coaching funding, if it’s not concussion it’s not flying the flag

Repeat. Rinse. Wash.

If we can’t decide on a date to celebrate unity, it’s pretty clear we’re not as unified as we think.

Hopefully that day comes in the future.
The boomers yelling on Facebook about whinging aboriginals and women and woke and this and that.

Yeah, the day is dead.

You’ll have to wrap your head around a couple of things. Pushing jan 26 as something good, is a political agenda.

Secondly, stop being narcissistic. You’re using your feelings to justify why people shouldn’t express the complexity of the date. Your feelings of guilt should not be used to shut down a debate. Grow up.

StKilda have put out a similar sentiment fw
If we move the date, colonialist’s can continue to celebrate the 26th, indigenous can continue to morn the 26th, and collectively we can celebrate a new day that’s for All Australians. And we can get the hottest 100 back on a public holiday 🙂

The top 3, though not all Australian, were some of the best songs of this decade

Yeah but we don’t protest and hate the Big Bang so we?

Is there an annual argument about it?

One happened, the other is an artificial political exercise.

My take is simplistic. I am in favour of reinventing the day we celebrate our nation and moving the date. I just don't know what is acceptable to all sides of the discussion.

The solution is actually really easy.

Bring in proper Treaty with First Nations Australians, and use that date to celebrate everything that is Australia for everyone.

Woah. When did I attempt to shut down the debate?

I’m not pushing January 26th. January 26th is our national day and until that changes, myself or anyone else should be free to celebrate it without shame and guilt.

I certainly shouldn’t have to hear it from my football club.

Couldn’t we maybe just focus on the positives of today like welcoming new Australians, family and community coming together?

WesternRoo latest polling looks better for Albo and worse for Dutton;

roy morgan has based all their opinions on 2pp. If it was first past the post the coalition would have it.. however, if there was no coalition, the libs would never hold power on their own. I wouldn’t be sure the Nats are the regional power houses they once were either.

Its not clear cut. Im still thinking it’ll be hung, a Labor victory is not out reach and the coalition are next to zero chance of winning a majority. They’ll have to take ALP strong hold seats and I dont think they can do it.
