I like it Hatchy, ultimately hugely influential on creating democratic rights, celebrates the southern cross, and sticking it to the "man".....ultimately a celebration of our egalitarian society, and multi culturalism.
I hadn't considered the democratic part of it when thinking about it, but that was ultimately a huge influence on the make-up of our country.

If it does get done, I imagine the costs will be split between state and federal governments as well as private equity.
Who's providing private equity (AFL aside) based on project cost, likely cost over runs, and limited returns based on the size of Tassie/Hobart population???? If you find out, can you please let me know, I guarantee I can generate a much better financial return, risk free as well!

The Eureka Stockade was fundamental in the development of "universal" suffrage, ie the right of everyone (well every bloke anyway) to vote regardless of whether they held property or not. It then led on to proper universal suffrage.

True, it's not the birth of western style liberal democracy but it was a very important touchstone.

The only problem is one particularly part of society taking the Eureka flag as an emblem… which has ruined its connotations as a beacon for universal labour rights

I’d like to see anyone on this forum try to kick me.

It's been usurped by two different parts of society - right wing neo nazi / white nationalists as well as left wing building unions. The unions arguably had a connection to the original purpose (although that's flimsy despite what Kevin Sheedy says). You could just as easily argue that the stockade was a rebellion by small, independent business owners demanding no taxation without representation. The nazis are kidding themselves if they think the original protest had anything to do with their idiotic cause.

It's a shame because it's a beautiful flag and would make an ideal national flag for the independent sovereign nation of Victoria.

We only need to go back to Albo, an absolute joke of a PM
It's weird that we get into these arguments over whether the current Labor PM or the most recent Liberal PM is the worst PM ever. What are the odds that it would come down to those two? Recency bias clearly plays into this just as it does with any football conversation about greatest ever. But on raw data or historic failings, it's challenging to mount a case against either one of these peanuts being worst ever. Neither one completely tanked the economy, put us into recession, or got us into a foreign war with no exit strategy.

Because only our dear Horace can say whether Alfred Deakin was the worst

Go wild my friend.

I wouldn’t be surprised if, between two branches of govt, in an election year, they’ll eventually get enough sweeteners to make it worthwhile.

Its funny that cos the leader of the uprising turned out to be a bit of a toff campaigner. Well at least according to some people. Definitely an interesting guy.
