Its more about commentators saying that just because an afl player kicks a soccer goal, doesnt mean he is good enough to play soccer, and vice versa.
Just annoys me mate.

Its common usage and has been for decades.

If I told you "he soccered it from the pocket for a goal" would you be able to describe what happened? Yes, yes you would because the meaning of those words are ingrained into you.

Its combining hyperbole with a metaphor (simile?) to accentuate the moment. You shouldn't take such comments literally. Its meant to be tongue in cheek.

If I were to say to you "My dick is so big, girls need a snorkel just to blow me", would it offend you to find out girls don't *actually* need a snorkel to give me head?

Absolute pet hate of commentators is when they compare players and say, for example, "the best players in our game are your Judds and your Fevola's"

Firstly theres only one of them running around the paddock, and secondly, noone owns them so why are the refered to as 'yours' =/

I hate it when whoever is doing special comments tacks on either "this afternoon" or "tonight" onto the end of every sentence. We know when the game's being played, you don't need to remind us every minute or so.

Michael Christian's "oh gee" after every turnover or dodgy looking possession gets old pretty quick too.
