Well, hopefully the rest of his reign is long and glorious
Will be interesting to see if he resorts to pinching from here on. The media will be ready to catch him out if he does.

Hey fellers, let me say it again: “don’t complain and don’t explain”.
We stand behind our captain and our players, we’re 100% Hawthorn here, they’re all part of us. There are enough Hawthorn haters out there.

The posters here attacking Ben Stratton should be ashamed of yourselves.
Let’s get behind him.

Remember 1985 when they tried our captain in the criminal courts?

Rant over

Mate he did some pretty dumb things, things you wouldn't want to see done to our players.

He's copped his whack and then some but that doesn't mean our supporters have to act like it's all sunshine and roses and that he didn't do some dumb things.

A consistent pattern of underperforming and underwhelming legal strategy should be treated just like a poor player.

Replace with a better representative (e.g. the Cats guy Ben Ihle managed to free Ablett (although that was easier).

Otherwise, we are going to get stuck with a poor advocate for more serious cases too.

In all fairness his second chair Gerard Whateley carries a lot of the load.

Even the AFL website questioning our legal strategy

Still thought, the weaknesses were :
1. Didn't mention whole AFL career without suspension (I.e. good record)
2. Past precedents regarding penalties
3. Negligible harm caused
4. No character references
5. Didn't call stratton to testify

Edit: Possibly could have asked for a fine with a suspended sentence (given the AFL seems to love suspended sentences)

We've been garbage in that department for years. Have heard we've got people with great reputation representing us, but every time I look at what they've said to defend our players I want to facepalm.

Of course this weasel chips in

What the hell happened to the old unwritten rule that you don't dob an opponent in? This new generation of players is all too willing to chuck their opponents under the bus. Always seems to be someone that's a bit dirty themselves too, Jed Lamb acting like he's a cleanskin is a joke

Probably a good thing, Luke Hodge has a silver tongue compared to him.

I will throw in a conspiracy theory.

The outcome was arranged and here is why.

Gillon came out yesterday and was very strong on not commenting on Stevenson of Collingwood and the alleged betting, repeatedly saying he wasn't going to comment since it was yet to be heard. This was in comparison with Goyder's and his own actions on the weekend regarding Stratts, which were totally at odds with the AFL's own policy of officials not being allowed to comment prior to a hearing to avoid it being prejudicial to the hearing. Clarko gave them both a clip on Monday night on AFL360, so much so that even Robbo agreed it wasn't right what was said by them, so it was high on the club's mind that Stratts wasn't going to receive due process.

So my conspiracy theory is that a deal was done in the background and the Hawks accepted 2 weeks, because there had to be something so the footy world didn't implode, any more and we would have appealed on the grounds that the AFL top dogs had prejudiced its own process.

You know the saying though, if it is a conspiracy or a stuff up, back the stuff up every time, and it is the AFL afterall and they have a lot of side deals going on and stuff a lot of things up.

It started with our David Polkinghorne in 1982 !!

In 1982, Carlton’s Wayne Johnston was reported for striking Hawthorn’s David Polkinghorne. At the tribunal, Polkinghorne broke the code of silence and told the truth. Johnston was found guilty and suspended for a week.

Polkinghorne was criticised by former players and journalists. There was an unwritten code all footballers adhered to, no matter what happened. There was no video evidence. Polkinghorne didn’t have to tell the truth, but he must’ve been angry.

I’m glad you weren’t around in 1985.

Lethal Leigh would be just getting out of jail!

I was and I'm sorry but supporters on a forum saying they think what Stratton did was shit is fine.
It's not 1985 for one thing and has nothing to do with what peole thought was acceptable in 1985 for another

Good result.
Deserved every bit of three penalties from the game.
The only thing Stratts didn’t get was a punch to the face for pinching.

He has been is terrible form & should have been playing BH anyway.
I hope he comes back with a point to prove & takes being the captain of Hawthorn seriously & leads the team well for the remainder of this year.
