Some scary stats from the Vic press conference.

In the last 2 weeks, about 90% of people didn't isolate between the first onset of symptoms and then getting tested. About 50% did not isolate in the period between getting tested and receiving a result. That's helping to drive new cases. Andrews acknowledged that the loss of income was one reason people weren't isolating because they don't have access to sick leave. Victoria will provide a payment to people who are facing loss of income.

No changes to current restrictions.

It is beyond me the stupidity of people, seriously they have then gone on to possibly infect numerous others, some of who may in fact die. What part of self isolate do people not understand? 😡😡

Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has revealed the reason why the second lockdown doesn’t seem to be working and it all comes down to people with COVID-19 symptoms or waiting for test results failing to isolate.

A fortnight into the second lockdown, Victoria has announced another record high of 484 daily COVID cases.

But the Victorian Premier believes he knows the reason why and it all comes down to the fact that half of the new COVID cases now admit they failed to isolate after being swabbed for COVID-19.

A stunning 90 per cent failed to immediately isolate after feeling unwell but before they were tested, spreading the killer virus throughout Victoria.

So basically, people being campaigners. Now there's a surprise.

I listened to the presser. These are the specifics. He sounded very frustrated by the results. People saying they can't believe Victorians have done anything different to rest of Oz. These stats suggest otherwise.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said from the 3,810 cases between July 7 to July 21, 3,400 cases did not isolate when they first felt sick and when they went to get a test.

"Now, that's an interesting measure in that people have felt sick, they've got symptoms, and they've kept going shopping. They've kept going to work," Mr Andrews said.

"But the only thing you can do when you feel sick — the one and only thing that you can and must do when you feel sick is to go and get tested. Nothing else is acceptable.

“And if people don't do that, then we will continue to see numbers increase.

“I'm being as frank, as blunt, as clear as I can. Because this message is central to the overall success —or otherwise — of the strategy and the restrictions that we have in place.”

I wrote down those 2 numbers but he also said 2,056 cases or 53% did not isolate straight after they went and did a covid test and were waiting for the result, still went to the shops. Also from the presser.

Six-week lockdown could be 'much longer' if the situation doesn't improve

"Unless we have people who get tested staying at home and isolating until they get their results, then we will not see these numbers come down," Daniel Andrews said.

"They will continue to go up and up. And a six-week shutdown will not be for six weeks. It will run for much longer than that. "But we can't have any longer, nine out of 10 people taking too long between when they first feel sick and when they get tested.

"And we certainly cannot have one in two people who are waiting for a test result simply going about their business as if they didn't have symptoms, as if they weren't waiting for a test result, as if this wasn't a global pandemic."

I didn't hear CMO talk but he said;

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said he suspected the state's R number was still above 1. He said he couldn't expect numbers to go down and said there could be "an even greater challenge" in coming days.

"That means that we're going to look at 500-600 cases per day," he said.

"I absolutely don't want us to go there. So we have to reinforce the things that we know will make a difference. And that is the very simple principles of isolation and quarantine."

Australia's Deputy CMO Michael Kidd reporting that a new COVID-19 case has been detected in South Australia. It is currently under investigation.

At this stage I have only heard this from one source but it was the Deputy Chief Medical Officer's press conference on SBS.

Confirmed, we do have a new case no details on where it was acquired and it is still being investigated.

Before the hotel quarantine program stuff-up the the reproduction number was tracking below 1 in Victoria. Back then they had a chance of achieving elimination but now that's a distant dream.

Yeah I was talking about the second wave, not the first. They did similar things to the rest of Oz. But they had the hardest restrictions and they were slack when they were reduced. But I heard maybe 3 commentators say when the 2nd wave hit ie numbers 40+ that they didn't think Victorians were doing anything different to the rest of Oz. it started with hotel quarantining not using police, ADF and trained security, and has been other reasons since then including the Cedar Meats outbreak and the handling of that.

I heard our old mate Professor Tony Blakely who was originally a herd immunologist but is now an eradication advocate on the ABC last night. He believes Victoria needs tighter lockdown rules.

It's more than annoying that Victoria threw away all the good progress they were making. The Chief Health Officer has said there's a chance 100% of the recent outbreaks originated from the hotel quarantine program.

And so it begins... better not have been some tosser crossing the border and not isolating.

It's interesting that states like WA and SA were able to achieve elimination without going to Stage 4 lockdowns like NZ. So I think elimination is achieve-able with Stage 3. I think it helps if you don't have much community transmission to start with. But you can't afford breaches of the lockdown, border control and quarantine protocols. Any breach and you could be another Victoria.

Interstate and overseas (one historical case), so shouldn't be worried as both were quarantining. What is more interesting is yet another case of someone coming through Victorian hotel quarantine testing negative over there and then positive here... Looks like they haven't fixed the problem.

The main problem we have is convincing people that this covid-19 is actually real, a lot of people are going doing there thing thinking that it's all fake and a conspiracy theory because they believe everything they read on FB like Pete Evans...

Until people are convinced otherwise, the numbers in Vic will keep rising.

Ya reckon?
My feeling is that exhaustion with the covid process has set in.

Where is this information coming from. All I have heard is the case is still under investigation. Can you post a link please?

I have it thank you. As you post yet another Victorian negative that later tests positive interstate. This is the fifth case I know of where the Victorian test has been a false negative.

We should not be trusting any testing done in Victoria.

it is a relief that Prof. Spurrier believes the situation is under control and is not unduly concerned.

One woman flew in from Pakistan the other from Mumbai.

Funny that all the ones saying it's a hoax are all on Facebook.

I'm sure the people that know the truth are sharing memes on Facebook...

It might have something to do with the extremely high statistical probability that if you're under say 60 (even then looks good) you're as likely to get run over as you are to die of COVID. You can only scream at people so long (this goes all around the world) that something is dangerous when everyone can see the huge body of evidence that for the majority of them it really isn't. Once you had the protests that were OK'd that was it, combine that with a low mortality rate and a basically 0 mortality rate for anyone under 50 worldwide you get what you get.
