Below is a COVID-19 graph for Victoria produced by the Department of Health.

There's been a recent jump in the number of people in hospital (black line) and the number of people in ICU (red line). 23 people were in a Vic hospital on Friday, up from six just a week ago. Five of those are in intensive care up from one. We're already seeing the impact of the recent surge in cases on the hospital system. The system isn't under stress but you can understand why the Chief Health Officer is quite concerned.

A new outbreak has been linked to an emergency department in Melbourne's north. Two healthcare workers were diagnosed with the virus on Friday. All emergency department staff are now being tested.

If I searched your posting history would I find a similar objection to the BLM protests? It's basically the same thing but far worse ethically because it was the first mass gathering of people since the lock-downs started. Protesting during a ******* pandemic is arguably the more selfish and irresponsible act. It really doesn't matter whether there was any physical community transmission at the protests, it caused a shift in perceptions and that genie isn't going back in the bottle. I understand why the protests happened, I support the cause, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it. Same with these Melbournites flouting rules, I understand why it's happening but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it.

Getting fairly close to "whataboutism" IMO.

The local BLM protests didn't raise my level of frustration at not being able to visit my folks in SA, or encourage me to break laws by attempting to cross state boundaries or pique me into breaching the general recommendations here in NSW. Quite the opposite. My first thought was, well this is a calculated, sorry, falsely calculated, risky activity the protesters are taking, thinking wrongly IMO that they were capable of weighing it against their emotion over what they see as a life and death issue. Of course they weren't making a fully rational decision. Whether they marched legally or no it was certainly risky. And my reaction, as a near CBD dweller was I'm going to stay away from it, wait a couple of weeks, and hope things don't blow up. Maybe that's just me. Whatever.

That said, one group's response to a perceived life and death issue is not the same as a bunch of individuals unilaterally resuming their recreational activities.

At least the bloody marches generally sought permission - however disorganised they were on the day.

The new Melbourne hotspots seem to be a combination of blatant disregard for the law combined with some pockets of ignorance.

Was one riskier than the other? A few mass outdoor events or multiple smaller indoor gatherings? Neither group could possibly know the answer to that because no one else does (although current loose consensus seems to be that "indoor" allows for a higher chance of droplet sharing).

The marches did not cause the shift in perceptions - it may have triggered some already poorly disposed to the shutdowns and maybe also to the protests for any number of other reasons. Your genie was never fully in the bottle. You may understand some of the bogus justifications from some of them. That's about all we can know, until a few Melbournites get a serious interviewing in numbers.

I have zero problems with the SA government refusing to have a hub in SA in light of the Victorian spike. Footy is just a game. I'm a little bit staggered by the anger about it tbh. Surely it's the state government's job to keep South Australians safe as a first priority.

Players and staff are being tested 100 times a week it's a joke really. It's exactly what I expected from S.A though.

Not half arsed I tried driving that way earlier. Was stopped at road blocks twice and had to show my licence and state where I'm going. Shutting the whole state is not necessary. Barely a bed in a hospital is being used.

The testing is inconsistent and unreliable. Some of SA's recent cases came from people who tested negative on crossing the border before testing positive once they were here.

Then test em again on this side. SA is lagging behind, time to show the country it isn't a dead end and is prepared to take a risk (which correctly managed shouldn't be risky at all, people cross the borders everyday, why should footballers prepared for a fortnight or longer stay be different) at picking up the slack where others are failing.

I agree. When I look at the way States like Queensland have lowered their COVID standards just to get a hub it makes me glad I live in SA. I am happy for the Victorians to serve their 14 days in Qld. even if some of them are not really in quarantine. They can come play at Adelaide Oval when they are proved to be virus free.

My initial knee jerk reaction was what the **** but when you think about it SA has done the smart thing. Of course we also need the AFL to do the smart thing and program Port Adelaide games in Adelaide.

You can’t make this sh*t up 🤣🤣

Footage emerges of Eddie McGuire declaring the next player breaching COVID-19 protocols should be fined $100,000 and suspended for the season
Just days after the Collingwood president played down Steele Sidebottom’s three COVID-19 protocol breaches, footage has emerged of Eddie McGuire demanding that the next player caught should cop a $100,000 fine and be suspended for the season.

What exactly is SA lagging behind on?
Property prices?
Standard of living?
Sustainable and shared growth?
Effectively dealing with Covid?

Did the AFL announce how they decided which Vic clubs would go to which hub states?

It would be interesting to know if Geelong and Collingwood have a better away record in WA than they do in the other hub states and likewise each of the other Vic clubs in the respective hub states.
# of hotels and facilities for players to use would have been a consideration. The state governments would have made suggestions re facilities as part of their discussions/negotiations.

Collingwood and Geelong were the first ones slated for Perth hub before the blow out in numbers forced all teams out of Victoria.

Why Sydney over GC for first week?? Maybe didn't want players in a holiday resort for a week before hard lockdown in Perth.

Lagging behind what?

The testing is unreliable and football is absolutely not an essential job or service. Having a hub in SA will require hundreds of non-essential border crosses.

I can't believe the SA government are getting stick for this. It's just football. All over the world, governments that don't take this seriously are seeing uncontrollable spread and mass deaths.

We'll just win the flag playing away every week and then by the time we've done it, SA will be safe enough that we can hold a parade for it.

800 players, 200 staff = 1,000 x 100 times a week (ever 1.64 hours) x $100 per test = $10,000,000 / week.

Nothing like a good Exaggeration, Eddie style.

The ability to step up and take over from others when they aren't up to it.

Also that growth bit.
