That's just lazy thinking - supermarkets are "essential" so we will allow them to open without restriction and watch as they draw crowds like bees to the honeypot because nothing else is open and because people want an outing. It would be far smarter to diffuse the crowds by allowing cafes and restaurants to open rather than having every man and his dog lining up at the local Coles. But for a politician to take that sort of decision they would have to be both smart and brave. And we don't have many of that ilk in this dumb country

So more like Switzerland who have a death rate almost 60 times higher then what we do ? Australia’s management of this has been as good as any other country in the world.
Nice to see you quoting switzerland - their lockdown has been pretty hard - it's the swedes who have not had mandated lockdowns

Yes - the virus is not spreading in supermarkets despite the crowds because community transmission is now pretty much non existent. That's just a further argument for allowing cafes and restaurant's to open.
The lazy thinking that you mentioned, is you thinking that people behave the same way in a restraunt compared to the supermarket.

i have to admit to being slightly confused here...

On the page 31 of today's Monopoly Mail we have an SANFL plan to relaunch local football from June 8th. The SANFL has submitted a return to play plan that the Marshall Government based on the 'AIS Framework for Rebooting Sport'. Under the framework the following protocol will apply_

  • Infection control training briefings for players and support staff.
  • Disinfected footballs
  • No access to change rooms , gyms or wet areas.
  • No sharing of water bottles, towels etc.
  • Training sessions will be conducted in groups of 10 across 3 divided areas on an oval with mixing or crossovers between groups

As I interpret the article the conditions above will apply to local and children's sport but the SANFL will continue to consult with SA Health and the Office of Recreation and Sport with a view to restarting 'competitive training followed by matches' next month in the senior leagues. I assume 'competitive training' involves training in groups of more than 10 and use of gyms etc.

In the meantime there is this...

On the same page the AFL has not ruled out a restart to the AFL season as early as June 11. Of course Collingwood have to be involved in yet another signature game albeit in a good cause. As Victoria returns yet another double digit positive test count there are those at AFL House who want to push the season start ahead by a week. To me that is living on another planet stuff.

In SA, a State with a single infection in almost three weeks and only 2 people hospitalised, we are rolling out local and school sport in carefully measured stages and still negotiating a start to competitive training for the SANFL and I assume the AFL clubs. Meanwhile across the border, in a State that has recorded over 100 community transmissions in a week, they are talking about restarting a national competition a week early.

Could June 11th happen? It might, but it will need a major reversal from the Andrews Government and pretty soon. Training in groups of 10 isn't going to do it as a restart needs full squad training, sharing of resources etc. We are unlikely to get that in South Australia before June 8th so I cannot see how the Vics will get it.

I guess we await developments.

There is an article in today's Monopoly Mail in which they outline the key points in a Hospitality Industry Restart Submission to the SA Government. It is about what most people would expect it to be, restricted bar service, 4 metre square rule, 1.5 metre distancing etc. The only thing missing is the bloody restart date.

No dates are mentioned but a bit further in the paper in red In The South Australian Road Map for easing COVID-19 Restrictions under 'Future Steps for Consideration' is the listing- Licenced Pubs and Bars Non Food. This would suggest that the reopening of pubs and clubs is a flexible matter and not limited to a particular stage of the Road Map. It is probably wishful thinking on my part but if the Industry submission is compelling enough and safeguards proposed are tight enough then restrictions could be eased on or before the 8th June. The door is obviously not wide open but it is not shut either.

Marshall has made a big deal about pop up bars that are frequented by his yuppie mates, it is a pity he does not display as much compassion for the 22,000 workers who depend on the pub trade for a living and thousands of others in the supply chain that feeds the industry. A few small bars mainly in the CBD are small change compared to the hundreds of pubs, restaurants and licenced cafes dotted across South Australia. To me it is an anomaly that small bars will be allowed to reopen on June 8th but not pubs which presumably have more space and greater scope for social distancing. If you apply the 4 square metre rule many bars will not get more than a dozen people in them at peak trading which makes in unviable for them to open.

I will patiently await June 8th but if there is no announcement re the reopening of my local on that date I will be hiring a Hi Lux and getting some Land of the Free posters made up. That will change of course if we have a sunned outbreak of the virus.

mate I m actually a little worried about where we are going to be in a year's time.

And it's not the virus or economy that has me worried the most.

Raptalia old mate! Where has this change of heart come from? I had you pigeonholed as the lockdown king and ardent supporter of all government restrictions. Were’t You advocating keeping people off the beaches and didn’t you buy a new phone to download the vaunted covid app? Ahh, the bright dawn of reason, slowly but inevitably it arises to light the way for all 👍

With the various gradual easing of restrictions the states have been announcing there are going to be businesses (eg pubs, cafes and restaurants, etc) that will decide that it's still not viable to reopen if they can only admit 10 patrons or less - it will be interesting to see the attitude of the Feds to these businesses re continuing JobKeeper payments, etc.

Might have something to do with the 1 new case in 17 days?

If we'd opened up when you wanted to, everyone would be dead by now.

Yes, the longer Job Keeper is active the more expensive it is for Freydenberg. i wonder if he has had that conversation with ScoMo.

I reckon if Marshall holds to his two step Road Map there will be a lot of hotels that will follow the King's Head into liquidation. I cannot see them being able to sustain no trade for four maybe five months.

The SA road map is as clear as mud. On one hand step 2 has a 4 sq metre rule but also it has a maximum of twenty people along side it. If you are a publican with 500 sq metres of floor space you can only have twenty patrons sitting in it. That is a 25 sq metre rule.

Imagine being that stupid. I wonder what these peoples day to day lives look like

Can I ask why these people want to arrest Bill Gates? What has he done? Has no one told them Gates is a US citizen living in the US?

Oh, I see...

I had to look up why they want to arrest Bill Gates. It seems that he's working on a vaccine, but conspiracists believe he's using it to depopulate the earth??? And this is people in Melbourne

I reckon that about does it for me. No AFL football for Victoria in 2020. These idiots are likely to storm the gates at the MCG demanding admission.

Someone tell me this is fake news.

Do any of you have friends/family/acquaintances that have bought into the conspiracy theories at all? I know a couple of people that have gone full anti-5g and anti-vax. I just cant reconcile with this kind of stupidity and i dont think the friendships will survive this whole thing.
Sad, but I feel like this time has exposed a lot about some people.

Meanwhile back on planet earth here is what a real road map looks like...

If WA can do it why can't SA?

Marshall and Spurrier have dropped the ball. While I am not as radical as those idiots on the steps of the Victorian Parliament I do think SA should be moving a little quicker as regards the hospitality sector. WA imposed restrictions that SA did not have as regards travel but they are moving quicker on bars and restaurants.

Geez, cannot get those scenes from Victoria out of my mind. Andrews cannot be seen to be given into a mob so maybe he will sit tight for longer just to show the mob they cannot win? Hopefully some arrests will be made and some people will do gaol time. I can see these images being beamed around the world and it will not be a good look for Australia.
