2nd case of corona virus from a Melbourne BLM rally protestor in the news today. Hopefully there's no more & it has no impact on returning crowds to the footy.

Incubation period not over yet. I expect there will be more.

Hopefully they live alone and not working and haven’t infected the wider community.

I think a hell of a lot of people are walking around with Covid and are asymptomatic, I wonder if these positive cases from the protests are people feeling unwell or they got randomly tested...... Are we even doing random testing?

I recall seeing something on youtube last week from a WHO press conference saying children very rarely show symptoms and are unlikely to spread it for some reason.

The former I think, though I believe Victoria will test you even if you don't have symptoms but it's still self-selected. I don't know that any states are doing random testing.

WA is doing 'random' testing. Some industries are encouraging their employees to test without symptoms.

Just the rapid screening finger prick tests that are a bit pointless. Did one 5 minutes ago and another about 4 weeks ago.

One upside to corona virus is I don't think my hands have been this clean ever. Two months ago you couldn't get hand sanitizer, now I can't walk into a store without a free dispenser to use.
Turns out I’m allergic to one of the soaps at work.

A lot of the hand sanitizers were removed because visitors were stealing them, so staff were encouraged to wash hands with soap and warm water as often as possible.

By the end of my shift (this was a few weeks ago now) I was turning red, itchy every where, especially my hands. And by the time I arrived at the Mater, my throat was tightening and lips tingling.

Adrenaline and an IV drip for a few hours, and I was all good.

Now we’re back to hand sanitizer in every room and hallways, etc.

Wouldn’t mind betting the thieves stealing the sanitiser were the same idiots hoarding supermarket supplies.
“ oh no we are going in lock down let’s buy 10,000 cups of noodles, just in case we starve to death”
What’s the world coming to when people are stealing sanitiser, something that is now sold in every shop in the country.

There is a certain type that will steal anything if the opportunity arises.

If you're referring to the protests, then I am very well aware of the 432 statistic which is the reason for the protests here in Australia. That being said, the 432 stat can be debunked and no one cared about it until some moron posing as a police officer killed a black guy in America. I'm not for police brutality and racism, I think both are ******* awful, but if we're going to be protesting at least make it about the lack of health services offered to indigenous people (which isn't happening), because it's illness that makes up majority of that 432 stat.

If you referring to me missing a point or post then ignore the paragraph above.

Yes, as mentioned above, I am very well aware of the larger issues that are being protested in Australia. However, as I said, that stat can be debunked and the efforts of the protests could be geared towards something that could actually make change. Protesting the treatment of black lives without direction of how to improve that treatment is not "larger significance" it's called running around with a blindfold waiting for somebody else to make a change for them. Majority of the BLM organization has no idea how to fix the treatment of black lives, they just protest when something happens and hope for the best and governments are no better when they pass stupid laws and implement rules that do nothing to to fix any issue. If BLM was an organization that collected donations to help black lives in a variety of programs then I might change my mind in regards to these protests.

I'll tell you what, I don't like BLM. I think they're a terrible organization. Not because they value black lives above every other life (because lives don't matter if they're white or asian), not because one of the founders (Shaun King) is Hispanic man pretending to be a black man (which was confirmed by his parents) and not because right now the people involved with the organization are destroying homes and businesses in America - of which these businesses are already on their last legs because of Covid19 - some of these people are friends of mine.

I don't like BLM because they don't see the bigger picture. Right now is the worst time to protest when we have a virus that can kill people running around. Right now is not the time to protest because this virus is highly contagious. It's not because people want others to see the significance of current issues, but it's because people have been inside for too long and have become crazy from a lack of social interaction.

Tl;dr
Although I'm pro freedom of speech and pro protesting, ultimately these protests will do nothing, so I would appreciate it if reactionary sheep could respect social distancing so I may at some point get into the Gabba and watch a game/play card games at a game shop with my friends/go to work/do literally anything that may be stopped by a second wave of Covid19. Protesting is fine, but if it comes at the cost of everyone else living life, then we have a problem.
I know it's a few days old, but I really appreciated reading this post.

In the wake of further cases following the protests I am quite frustrated at the hypocrisy of the so-called BLM leaders and protest organisers in this country. I get people wanting to protest these issues, but I find myself stunned that organisers can justify the risk of bringing a killer virus back into indigenous communities where access to health services is known to be harder to come by. More needs to be done about disadvantages, but putting these people at risk is not the answer, especially when the bigger picture has been ignored, as you say. It's a sad fact of the nature of outrage movement but this approach will ultimately divide people further on irrelevant issues and yield zero improvement in quality of life for indigenous people.

I find it funny that people are so quick to speak for the Indigenous communities, when the organisers (at least in NSW) are Indigenous so would be more aware that most of the trade-off between using the opportunity to try to effect change versus the risks of coronavirus spread.

There is a lot of that going on at the moment.

Just looking at protesting hordes, it looks like the majority of them are non -indigenous.

It seems like you're trying to draw an analogy between people attending an event organised by Indigenous members of the community who are asking them to speak with the same voice, and others who, well, aren't. It's not rocket science to see the difference between those two.

Not all indigenous people share the enthusiasm

There is no doubt that racism exists and that aboriginals are disadvantaged.

Simplistic slogans and marching up and down in en masse in city centres does nothing to address these complex issues

What it does do is create unnecessary public health risks in the middle of a pandemic.

I disagree on the "doing nothing". There's a hell of a lot more people discussing it right now as opposed to if everyone had sat on their arse at home.

What it does do is create unnecessary public health risks in the middle of a pandemic.

"Unnecessary" is a matter of opinion. Anyone who claims to be able to objectively weigh the risks versus the benefits of the protests is really just expecting everyone to substitute their moral viewpoint for their own.

I wouldn't have done it and didn't do it. But I understand why the organisers might feel that trade-off is tilted in one direction more than we do.

The organisers didn't seek opinion of the non-protesters as to what they thought of the trade-off .......but there's no point in continue arguing about this.

Let's agree to disagree.

FWIW I have no issue per se with the BLM movement.

It's the timing of the rallies that deeply concerns me/

Really? I know we all see things differently, but for me this is just over the top.

Some people don't have enough hobbies & way too much time on their hands to mull over things like this.

However, this is a corona virus thread so I should probably include a segue.

Like most of us, I watched on in disbelief with all the corona virus panic buying of bog roll, rice, pasta & meat. Can't understand what would drive people to behave so selfishly and irrationally.

Now I may become that which I most loathe.

The Colonial Pale Ale is one of my faves, gonna head out to do some hoarding of my own, just in case ;)

I saw that. The big news to me was I'd always thought it was owned by one of the big guys for some reason but turns out it's just some local investment group.
