The spread of Coronavirus the last few days has been unprecedented. The number of cases outside of China has jumped significantly with more than 82,000 people infected globally and is worrying governments worldwide with it's rapid spread. The PM has initiated an emergency response plan as a top Australian virologist has declared that 'everyone is likely to contact coronavirus' and that we are on the verge of a global pandemic. More information regarding this can be found in this Herald Sun article - heraldsun.com.au/lifestyle/health/coronavirus-questions-over-home-isolation-rules-for-chinese-students-returning-to-australia/news-story/b7d91a7fe8e431868007e36a7a7e2542

For those unaware, Coronavirus has a long incubation period (roughly 2 weeks, sometimes longer) therefor the number of cases worldwide is a rough estimate and we don't know how many people have actually been infected.

The reason I bring this up in regards to the AFL, is that numerous sports events are starting to be affected by this virus. The Six Nations rugby tournament has been postponed due to the number of cases in Italy, the last two stages of the UAE Tour in cycling have been cancelled and A-League side Perth Glory have refused to play an AFC Champions League game in Korea against Ulsan Hyundai. Other sports events such as the Cheltenham Festival, Euro 2020, the Giro d'Italia and the Tokyo Olympics are all monitoring the situation.

Should the AFL release a statement or have a plan in place in regards to the spread of the virus? While the number of confirmed cases in Australia is at 23, that number could well rise and potentially affect scheduled games.

Not sure if this has been touched on yet - if so mods please delete.

What's worse (or more accurate) is that this doesn't include people who get a bit of a cold and recover without reporting or needing any medical attention.

Was planning to travel OS in the next 6 weeks or so and now not really sure??? Never been one to heed travel warnings and been in quite a few countries safely even though the media was painting bleak pictures but this situation has me hesitant.
In this day and age of Fake news its hard to tell what is being reported is over the top or understated, which is just a tad frustrating.
As BigFooty is a forum of members form all over the world it would be great to hear some REAL stories from people in China or elsewhere that is being effected by CV.
Any info would be highly appreciated and big thanks in advance.

Probably going too early on it if they did.

What would it say? - "we're monitoring the situation"

I imagine they'll have some contingencies in place, such as playing games but only televising them instead of allowing crowds type thing to mitigate the monetary loss. Shortening the season by cancelling round(s) if it starts to look to be an issue.

This thing is likely been blown out of all proportion by the media, which would be true to form. Nothing but exaggerating, sensationalising, clickbaiting attention seeking whores.
It's 0.001% of the world's percentage lol.

The flu kills 650000 people every year.

I haven't been keeping up with the whole saga as much I probably should have , so I'm a bit confused. As far as I've heard it only seems to be people 65 and over , usually with pre existing medical conditions that seem to be dying, which seems quite typical for the flu. Apparently a newborn baby recovered from the virus without any medication the other day. So why has this whole thing blown into a massive saga where some sports are being played behind closed doors and places are being quarantined?

Just genuinely asking because I honestly feel like I've missed something crucial with this whole thing.

Where ever people are in the world at the moment the message surely must be stay there and certainly don't travel overseas as i can see a situation soon where some countries are going to ban all people from infested countries if they are not nationals of the country.

In a perverse way this is also a positive. One ‘expert’ said 70% of the world population may contract carnovirus but most wont even know it.

The last pandemic was 2009 with the H1N1 flu. I don’t recall any AFL games being cancelled in 09

Because it has a longer incubation period than the typical flu, there's no vaccine for this strain of Coronavirus and there's always the worry of it mutating into something more deadly.

The mortality rate of the normal flu is lower than the mortality rate of Coronavirus.

In saying that, there's no need to be alarmed and panic at this stage.
