Cotchin wants to keep the #9

God forbid our great club honor the greatest player our club has ever had.

Mate I am a big believer of tradition and I put JD right up there.

I think the problem that everyone has is that you watch kids come on from being raw rookies to promising young men to genuine guns and in the process you become attached to their number, especially if they have a 'low' number (with the possible exception of 41 as everyone loved 'shutdown' Turner and now Foley).

So it kind of doesn't feel right when their number gets taken off them and to be honest, the history of that number gets cut off mid stream. That's how it feels for me. It just kind of doesn't work for me when I think of names getting put on lockers when the very best of our players (and usually the captain is the best player) swaps jumpers at the peak of their career.

I also don't really like the possibility that sons of players who wore 17 (and there were many fine players) wont be able to wear their dad's jumper if they are drafted.

The problem is that now we are locked into a tradition where abandoning it seems disrespectful and possibly a bit embarrassing for all concerned.

Trent Cotchin....probably the best player to have pulled on our jumper in the last 25 years. A fearless, tireless worker with extremely good skills. To be honest the bloke is a god to me. He's not disrespecting anyone here or being selfish. He simply wants to remain in the number he's played 80 odd games in. The number he has already won two B&Fs in + 2nd in the Brownlow. It's not hard to see why he would be keen to hold onto that number. This guy oozes leadership. How many times has he put us on his back and carried as to a win? We'd be in deep shit if he ever gets a bad injury.

Thank god Cotch is keeping 9 as my Richmond guns hand signed memorabilia piece remains current!!!!

It has Riewoldt, Cotchin, Deledio and Martin, my main concern now is Dusty cracking the shits and leaving which would really make it worth nothing!

It's memorabilia, it's already worth nothing

Thats debatebale. I paid $400 for the piece at my local football club night.

It has quite large pictures which are hand signed by each and once they finish their careers I will be updating each players plaque to read their achievements, games etc.

I'm fairly sure, if Riewoldt keeps winning colemans, Cotchin nabs a brownlow or two and the others get the odd all australian, plus the ultimate "a premiership" i'm sure someone will be willing to fork out over $1000 for this as these 4 players could be seen as the ones that arguably changed Richmonds fortunes.

I'm most likely going to keep it, but hate memorablia that becomes outdated due to someone leaving a club or for example all of those fools who bought Lance Armstrong stuff.

Bullshit it was started by Greg miller and wallet and most on here can't wait to get the knives into those two, tradition my arse

Did they start it did they? Well it's one decent legacy they left the club... Tradition has to start somewhere and things like this help create great culture. It's just my opinion but I truly believe it's a great thing. Think 40 or 50 years from now - the Jack Dyer spirit lives on...

this isnt just about Dyer. If allowed to continue, in 50 years the 17 locker will have the names of the best leaders in our club. 17 will matter not because of Dyer, but because only the best leaders get to wear it, and its something to aspire to have your name on that locker.

Personally I think part of the issue people have with 17 is our recent captains:

Campbell - unfairly accused of a lot of stuff by RFC supporters, ranging from being soft to a white anting traitor

Johnson - Workhorse and not a "gun", so got labelled as unskilled, useless, and worst trade outside McMahon by one poster

Newman - I have never understood some of the hate this guy attracts. Again, consistent and hard worker, but because he's not a sexy player, he's a dud and an insult to the team to have him in our first 22

I suspect because Cotchin is the first fan fav we have had as capt since Knights this is coloring a lot of the views because of the recent hate directed to our capts.

If you had a pair of Riewoldts undies (with some red pubes as authenticity), that he wore when won the Coleman, it might be worth something.

Jump online and have a look at ebay or similar sites. Always people willing to pay for memorabilia, it just depends on how good it is which determines pricing.

Pretty sure if Martin left richmond, and cotch changed his number then that would affect the price of mine.

Right now i'm happy to watch those 4 guns continue to rack up accolades and add value to my piece.

Also adds to Richmond if they choose to go at a later date we will get a better bargaining chip.

Passionate or desperate

shouldn't be either, she's supposed to be a bloody journo.

other than us freaks, I cant see anyone giving a shit. Only way SEN are making this sound relevant is by drawing the long bow and suggesting the club cannot force Cotchin to choose between 9 or the captaincy (no matter what side of the 17 argument you are on, I think we all agree Cotch is the next capt regardless of what number he has)
