I would love a lottery between the last 8 teams with more balls in the barrell for the teams that finish lower, but not enough to validate tanking a game or 2.
Also think it would make for great veiwing and excitment.
If you finish 9th or 10th you would be a very rough chance of getting pick 1 but you could get lucky and snag something like 3 or 4 instead of 8.
Priority picks are no good in my opinion but maybe a second round priority would do instead of a first.

I really think the best system would just be to leave it as it is except make priority picks before the 2nd rounds of picks. Or perhaps priority picks at pick 9 or something, after the bottom 8 teams have all had one shot. That way you're still helping the teams down the bottom but not so much as the best 2 youngsters they can find.

Well clearly something has to be done not the least of which is to get rid of priority picks completely. Personally I am in favour of some form of lottery, certainly for the bottom four.

how is this for a controversial idea

the draft to consist of only two rounds, so that only the best of the u/18 are picked up,
and then have an extended rookie list system so that the form plyers from wafl, vfl, sanfl players are give a go.

my reasoning for this is that there are too many "development" players on afl lists. there are too many players who are still learning the game and gaining experience at lower levels and who are not seriously challenging for selection at afl level.

i'm waiting to be shot down in flames over this proposal!

How about this?

1st - pick 16.
-
-
-
-
-
16th - pick 1.

Rinse, cycle and repeat. Works fine as long as there are no priority picks.

Finally some common sense, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Sides like melbourne geninuley need pick 1, i do not agree with PP's they should be scrapped all together.

After 15 rounds (everyone should play eachother once, bring the old draw back)
13, 14, 15, 16 then go into a playoff, with the winner of the most games in those final 7 rounds getting pick 1.
Now this could work, as i think with 7 rounds left in the season most teams above 12th would still be eyeing finals.
That could be a format, change it up a little though if there is holes which there is bound to be.

I read this in a newspaper article a month or 2 ago (can't remember who wrote it though) and it makes sense. Eliminates 2 of the AFL's biggest issues : tanking and fixture.
Everyone plays everyone (simple) and the ladder as of round 15 is the order in which draft picks are allocated..
Two birds one stone!!

Just take out priority picks and make the bottom 8 a lottery.

People can still try and finish 13th I guess, god this has gone crazy. Get rid of priorities and addopt an NBA style lottery. Easy.

What i like about this idea in the OP is that the same teams are not getting the first pick in every round.

My problem with the system is why should last place get the first pick in every round. That's too big an advantage...especially if you are also getting priorities.

But I don't think this is the solution. However I do like the fact that you are trying to get more equality into the draft instead of rewarding the low place finishers in every round.

Agreed

16 8 balls
15 7 balls
14 6 balls
13 5 balls
12 4 balls
11 3 balls
10 2 balls
9 1 ball

1 ball from the 36 are drawn for the number 1 pick. Which ever team wins the number one pick all their balls are removed and the lottery continues again for pick 2. Continue until pick 8 then just continue as normal. Maybe from the second round onwards just revert back to 16th getting the first pick in the second round.

makes sense

The 9th placed team has odds of 36 to 1 of getting the number one pick so you can imagine that it wouldnt happen very often, if ever.

Clearly the bottom eight lottery is the way to go.
The past has shown that pick 1 isnt always the bast so if the bottom team gets pick 2 or 3 well im cool with that.
Also would be great tv viewing, you would be sitting watching with your fingers crossed if you only had 2 or 3 balls and it would feel like winning lotto if you scored a top 3 pick.

Rather than picks given out as a result of final ladder positions, how about this:

At the end of each round teams are given points equal to their ladder position. At the end of the year, team with the most point gets first pick, next highest gets next pick etc.

Pretty simple and logical.

I have explained many times why Lottery doesn't stop or even reduce tanking (especially if your definition of tanking is list management).

Can someone explain how they think it STOPS tanking or even reduces tanking? I just don't see it. I think we have to be honest and admit that the lottery does nothing for tanking and its basically liked as a concept as it is sexy and gives one more day on the AFL calendar (i.e. the day the draft is held).
