I have always thought that TV has been Sydney-centric, channel nine especially.

The best way the media can make a positive contribution to getting us out of this is an active campaign to encourage people to get vaccinated, including the over 60s who are AZ hesitant. Fat chance of that happening.

On on a more general note it's disappointing to see the inability of many to cope with nuance. Life is never black or white (excuse the pun). Dan has done some great things but also some dumb things. The same is true of Gladys.

These partisan views of good and bad are stopping us learning, adjusting and balancing what we are doing to help us all get us through this situation.

Perhaps all the states have been let down by the man who had a vaccine plan which put all our eggs in 2 baskets.

“I don’t hold a hose, mate”

Today's Age editorial isn't Sydney based (and it does come across as a bit of a rant) but it does show that DA missed the moment yesterday.

That editorial is ok until the last 3 paragraphs when it just becomes a bit of a rant (I'm expert in rants btw).

F***, that's a much larger gap than I remembered.

It offers people a lesser but still "reasonable" degree of protection.

Infinitely preferable to nothing. If I wasn't vaccinated yet I'd jump at it.

If I was living in any other developed country, my views would be mainstream. You would be the one out of synch with majority opinion.
Every comment you make about the lockdown is related to your own needs. You never consider the needs of other people. It’s all about what you want.

The thing to know with effectiveness, is that effectiveness data is based on symptomatic illness. The differences with hospitalisations and death between the vaccines and how they are taken are much smaller than they are with symptomatic illness. They're all extremely effective at keeping you out of hospital - pre-Delta at least.

I trust or hope that you're right. I'll admit that I haven't come across much in the way of studies measuring effectiveness according to hospitalisation and deaths.

Nevertheless, I'm inclined to think that the initiative is a good one. I'm on board. Throw needles at people like darts at a darts board. I want nothing more right now (not strictly true) than for as many people to be vaccinated as quickly as possible.

Why? Because I don't share the same view as you? Let's see how Victorians tolerate the next few months before we decide whose views I represent.

Your view is based around your own personal need.

NSW today reached 70% first dose of the eligible population. That’s an outstanding effort, and they are to be congratulated for it.

Politics aside, as Gladys eases restrictions (she has already in the LGAs of concern, but only on outdoor exercise) with the growing vaccination rate, NSW will be showing us what that looks like. There will be lessons for us, and now is not the time for the egos of competing premiers.

My greatest fears still lie with the capacity of the health system to cope - with the mostly unvaccinated - and with the effect of the virus on children, where it will take off.

I hear ya.

One of my daily rants is going to be about how being Australian has changed a little.

When abroad I tell people I'm Aussie, and quite proudly too.

COVID has thrown this out of whack.

What does it even mean to be an Australian today?

The woefully inadequate Commonwealth leadership coupled with the divisive state politics have me feeling dissilussioned about the state of the federation.

Perhaps as JB1975 mentioned (yesterday?) a Hawke or a Howard would have risen to the task and gotten us through this as a country. More united and in sync.

* More rants to come in due course.

I wish you would say just one negative thing about Dan.
Agree with Chameleon75 his ears are big, has a bad posture, seems at times he is talking down to people, has made mistakes with lockdowns and border with NSW, covid zero is now impossible not before.

However in saying this, Morrison is still my favourite No.1 target and now a close second Gladys.

Maybe I have become immune to Dan, don't watch his or any of press conferences anymore.

Agree that ScoMo should be everyone's target. Can't wait to fire his arse.

Gladys has made mistakes but has done a solid job recently in (a) achieving high vaccination rates and (b) offering hope and a roadmap out of the Delta mess that is very much in line with the rest of the world.

I was very angry with NSW initially but 12 months ago other states blamed Victoria for being the source of outbreaks.

All the studies have had a serious illness result - with the earlier strains there was barely any for all of the vaccines - including the Chinese ones. I don't know about the Delta strain, which is all that's relevant now.

Fair enough but I still want to hold on to the anger, makes the day pass quicker.

They might also show us what happens when the hospital system collapses.

The efficacy of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines appears to reduce over time.

I was wondering if Australia was using monoclonal antibody treatment as it seems to be in the USA with some success and this is what I found. Doesn't seem like a lot if it works. Dated 8th August.

The Australian Government has secured an initial shipment of over 7,700 doses of the novel monoclonal antibody treatment sotrovimab. This treatment has been shown to dramatically reduce hospitalisation and risk of death in adults with mild to moderate COVID-19, who are at risk of developing severe COVID-19.

Some facts from Paul Kelly.

Delta is more infectious, there is little evidence that it is more deadly, or "wicked"/"nasty"/"evil"... The reduced impact on kids is noteworthy but we all know that could change.

No-one with 2 functioning brain cells would propose that we stop our current efforts to prevent overwhelming the health system but knowing the facts is important. We should not live in fear.
