Australia's idea of achieving safety is to fine the bejeesus out of everyone for everything, sprinkle drug and alcohol buses over the entire city and suburbs,

Ever had a loved one killed by a drunken driver? I have. I’d like to see more alcohol buses, not less.

They’ve even made Sunday a 23-hour day, so it’s less time before you can gloat at work on Monday!

Au contraire mon frère.

There will be no gloating at work on Monday because I'm taking a couple of days off in order to properly celebrate our 16th. The workplace gloating will take place on Wednesday.

We have an absurdly low road toll compared to the rest of the world. No offence, but it's this style of thinking that boosts the fines and police surveillance levels to unnecessarily oppressive heights.

Think I’ll resort to the old let’s agree to disagree. This back and forth is boring for other posters.

If you have ever been to Tokyo, and Japan in general, it is about as safe a tourist destination as there is.
I lived in Tokyo for a year. Even the police are bored because there is nothing to do. But they don't achieve this level of safety through fines and police presence. And Tokyo has its compensation though for having the most obedient population in the world.

I was enjoying it.

Amateur. I’m on long service leave to continue celebrations right up until the SuperBowl.

5 year olds commute to school by themselves on trains.
Here you're lucky if you get to be part of a parent supervised crocodile walk to school. That's despite the walk or ride actually being much safer now than was the case 50 years ago.

What exactly is being oppressed? Your right to endanger others? How often do you feel this impacts your life?

Nordic countries have 50% (ish) lower road tolls per capita than we do. Seems like we can do better. Maybe if we scaled the fines that seem to preoccupy you so much to be proportionate to income, you'd be happier.

The ACT has the right idea - pub hol on the Monday instead.

I think Melbourne ticks a lot of boxes. Safety is one of them.

Great food and drink options from a wide variety of cuisines, great art and culture, live entertainment everywhere, one of the better sporting cities in the world, interesting nearby places to visit.

Downsides are the inconsistent weather, traffic, and all the construction disruptions (off the top of my head). It's not bad!

Couldn't agree more.

Melbourne is where you'll find the finest coffee, a delightful selection of multicultural cuisines, and the best quality sourdough bread.

Our rugged coastline will become even more of a worldwide destination when the rest of Australia becomes too hot to live in.

2 more key Melbourne attractions:

  • Mark Latham lives in NSW
  • Pauline Hanson lives in Qld

Now you are singing from my hymn book. Traffic fines have become income collections for the Govt. Confession _ I have been to 12 points twice and still needed help from family members during the 12 months amnesty so maybe you sympathy meter just dropped Vicky Park

I do have a funny story of a relo who nicely agreed to take some points for me. He had previously been pretty nauseating with his history of never having had a speeding fine. Took 3 for me on a day i accrued 6. One year later gets pinged on the Hume Hwy. Asks the copper if being a cleanskin would help. Was told 3 times "Absolutely Sir , but be sure because wont be good if i go back to the car and check the data base and find you are telling porkies". Copper goes and checks and comes back and says "Mate you had one 12 months ago". Penny dropped. He was tempted to plead his case but wisely.......

This brother is a member of the legal fraternity so as of now i have turned this story into a work of fiction. Would have been bloody funny if it happened.

The amount we pay in fines is obscene.

I have to teach on Monday. That’ll be interesting.

Your energy will be contagious, the class will be buzzing.*

* Provided the post celebration hangover is not too severe; in the case that it is, yep it will be very interesting.
