Hickey had less disposals than Gawn (17 to 19), less marks (4 to 5), less contested marks (1 to 3), less hitouts (24 to 30), less tackles (1 to 2) and the same amount of goals (1). Hickey did win clearances (5 to 3).

BUT Hickey did play well, so that is considered ''beating'' Gawn.

He didn't, but that's the narrative everyone runs with.

EDIT: Gawn had 30 hitouts from 49 contests and 14 hitouts to advantage

Hickey won 24 hitouts from 71 contests with 7 to advantage.

So even in their respective ruckwork Gawn had a better win% and a better hitout to advatage %.

But yeah, Hickey ''beat'' him.

he really didn't though. It's just that no-one expects anything from Hickey. If Hickey had Gawn's numbers people would be saying the same thing.
One game doesn't matter when comparing careers, but Hickey being good/better than Gawn definitely helped make the difference on the weekend.

Cox's tap work gets undersold a bit because everyone remembers his skills and mobility for his size first.

So at what stage do the player ratings factor in all of the game time that Gawn was deep forward and Jackson was rucking?
Well if he’s kicking goals and otherwise doing stuff I’m sure the ratings would give him points, if he’s standing around doing bugger all up there, well not so much!

The whole point of the ratings is their impact over the entire game. Are you suggesting he shouldn’t be rated for when he is up forward?

Of course. You're saying Hickey beat Gawn. Yet you're using player ratings which mark Gawn down signicantly for time when hickey and Gawn weren't even playing on each other. If anything, your stats show that Gawn likely outperformed Hickey when rucking against each other due to his time spent forward and Jackson rucking.

One's ranked two out of 44 and the other 5. Meaningless.

Especially when May is ranked 8 when most consider him best on ground after one of the great finals games by a key defender.

The coaches awarded 6 players votes in the Gary Ayres Medal, yet they awarded none to Gawn or Hickey. I'm far more interested in the eye test than ''ratings points''.

I don’t know, the Cox is better than Gawn because Tom Hickey was a pretty compelling argument.

It’s well known that Cox came out the victor in the ruck battle in all of his 290 games.

Are we allowed to talk about Gawns performances in finals yet? The 5 goal prelim looking like the massive exception to what he’s been putting up otherwise
You can discuss whatever you like.

Gawn wasn't the reason we lost last night.

15 disposals, 2 contested marks, 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 36 hitouts would be in line with his career averages (or better).

Do you want to talk about his and Cox's career records when it comes to coaches and Brownlow votes ?

Cool raw stats. How about 7 effective disposals against Darcy Fort of all people.

Disappeared in the second half when the lions made their move. Fort had more second half touches.

Need more from your best players

He didn't have a great game, but it was far from a shocker.

When the heat was on, i.e. early in a final, he led the way.

We know he has groin issues, which may have limited him later in the match, but c'est la vie.

Back to the coaches and Brownlow votes ? Or their respective contested marking history ?

Because Dean Cox only ever played excellent games…

Funny that the Eagles fan boy picks a game where Gawn was statistically superior to Cox’s CAREER averages as the one to illustrate how poor Gawn is.

When the alleged poor game is statistically better than your man’s average game, well, game, set and match.

But, but… Cox might have taken buggerall contested marks, and got buggerall hit outs next to Gawn, but you see, the ones he did get, wow, they were all at the right time! What you need from a ruck is the ability to consistently hit up 25 metre passes.

Gawn was shit but he also had a corky and couldn't move.

Its a stupid comparison, because West Coast fans naturally don't remember any bad games Cox had given he retired long ago.

Dean Cox’s corkies were much better than Max Gawn’s corkies.

What’s more, Cox also had a better beard, and better nose.
