I disagree with this - Dan Cullen isn't a good example; but anyone whose played more than a dozen or so Tests for Australia would be pretty well known.

The long term guys like McGrath, Ponting, Warne, Gilchrist, Hayden, Langer, Martyn, Gillespie would all be recognised by most people.

I agree with you on the long term players but we need to remember this is a forum full of people who love their sport. I think about 10-15% of our population would recognise guys like Jaques, Johnson, Katich and Clark.

u guys are really brilliant
but geez got a bit confused,
there is a spelling on a post above, hence just confirming mates,
1)bigfooty is an aussie forum?right?
2)like cricketers are the number one celebs in india, in oz top afl players, top nrl players, top cricketers, top hollywood actors/actresses,top other sporting stars rank as the most well known faces?correct or no?

i am really sorry if i am pissing off someone but i am born in oz and i do not know as much about it, as i want to, btw, i can only post after 5 days as i have just joined in

1) Yes, it's an Aussie forum
2) Yes, the top ones are up their with the other well known faces.

By the way, you've managed to rack up 25+ posts so you're no longer a newbie;)

Haha really? Do you talk to DC much?

Yeah, we have the odd chat. He lives with a couple of his teammates from Woodville. Really nice, down to earth bloke which most people find hard to believe because they think he has let his ego get in the way of a promising career. Couldn't be further from the truth.

I will try to answer this as best as possible because of your persistence.

In my opinion, the top celebrities are the top Hollywood actors/actresses and the most well known Australian actors/actresses. I am basing this by the amount of interest that the paparazzi show in them.

The Australian cricket team is without doubt the most high profile sporting team. That's because it's pretty much the only game that all states play.

I think what you're asking is similar to awareness and marketability. I will direct you to this reference, which ranks sportsmen in a sponsorship appropriateness ratio in which the proportion of people who rate a sportsperson as being worthy of endorsing brands and organisations is compared to the proportion of people who are aware of that individual.

The cricketers dominate the list (6 in the top 10) and you will find that there are not many football players in that list.

To make it easier, below is the top 20 sportsmen/women:
1. Ponting
2. Gilchrist
3. Grant Hackett (Australia swim team captain)
3. Ian Thorpe (former swimmer)
5. Lee
6. McGrath
7. Harry Kewell (Australian soccer player)
7. Pat Rafter (former tennis player)
7. Steve Waugh
10. Symonds
10. Cathy Freeman (former runner)
12. Greg Norman (former golfer)
13. Craig Lowndes (racing car driver)
14. Lleyton Hewitt (tennis player)
15. Warne
16. George Gregan (former rugby union player)
16. Layne Beachley (surfer)
18. Kostya Tszyu (former boxer)
19. James Hird (former AFL football player)
20. Leisel Jones (swimmer)
20. Libby Trickett (swimmer)
20. Mark Skaife (racing car driver)
20. Clarke

Having said that, the people in the list above do lead a fairly normal existence. They won't be mobbed walking down the street, and I think Ian Thorpe even attends university in Sydney without much trouble.

guys, if there is a location mentioned for everyone who is posting, then is it understood that, tht fellow lives in that particular place?

mate by australian actors and actresses, do u mean, hollywood ones?

mate by australian actors and actresses, do u mean, hollywood ones?

Yes and no. Australian actors who have also featured in Hollywood like Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are the most in demand Australian celebrities. There are other high profile celebrities in Australia who appear mainly on Australian TV, not Hollywood.

Hope that helps.

1. Yes, it is the norm over here.

2. The most recent research results from Sweeney Research shows that the number 1 sport in Australia is Tennis, followed by swimming, then cricket.
A year ago, the number 1 sport Australia wide was cricket, followed by swimming, then AFL football.

Sweeney Research is Australia's most authoritative report on sport and sponsorship.

The Australian cricket team is the most well known sports team here.

I have already told you the three most well known sports (in my post above).

all my queries will be over if i get to know the following three things, anybody can answer the three questions in a single word, yes or no and i would be put out of my misery, i am really curious and anxious to know.

1)is the australian cricket team the most well known sports team in oz overall on a national level?yes or no

2)who are the most well known people in oz?like in india its cricketers and bollywood actors/actresses?are they sportstars(inculding cricketers, afl players, nrl players, etc.) and hollywood actors/actresses?yes or no

For the last time...

1. Yes
2. Top actors/actresses are most well known.
3. Tennis, swimming, cricket - in that order.

I reckon 70-80% of my male mates would recognise Johnson and Katich in the street.

Most females would recognise Johnson I'd reckon.

please please put me out of my misery

if anyone living oz can please please answer these questions, my curiousness would get over

1)are cricketers as well known as stars from any other sport in oz?

2)stars from which all fields are the most well known stars in oz?

3)who do aussies of indian origin support and i am talking about both who are born in oz and outside oz?

i have checked both links u posted after u posted but i had also checked them a million times before u posted them
thanx for them
can u tell me, a couple of simple answers,
1)who do people of indian origin who are living in aus, support in sport, those who are born in and outside aus?
2)on a national scale overall, cricketers are as well known as sportstars from any other sport or not?
3)which is the sport that nationally overall gets the maximum coverage in the aussie media?

1. It is a mix but from my limited perspective I'd say they usually support India.

2. Cricketers are well-known but not as much as AFL or League players.

3. I'd say AFL but I don't know what the other states are like. It'd be AFL or cricket, maybe cricket because in NSW and QLD AFL doesn't get that much coverage whereas every state loves cricket.

thanx a ton but confused,
1)it is a mix but mostly india fo both born in australia and abroad?
2)why is it that sweeney research has 6 cricketers in the top 11?
3)you have said both afl and cricket, so one can say that they are tied?
