Great decision. Middle order batting is so important given the form of Bumrah. Good luck Beau!
Plus the First Test in Sri Lanka is only 4 weeks away (January 29). If Marsh had played and failed twice in Sydney, what then? This is a smart decision, with a view to the future.

Very comforting to know that the Aussie selectors read Big Footy and take note of what I post.

Geez, what a load of sentimental claptrap from Crash Craddock in this morning's press. According to Craddock the Aussie selectors were in a bind over dropping Marsh because he is such a nice guy. Craddock could not resist the temptation to compare the agony of dropping Mitch Marsh with that of Laurie Sawle dropping Marsh's father Geoff all those years ago.

Mitch Marsh has not earned his spot in the side and nice guys come second in my book. If a player is not performing he gets the chop simple as that. Doubtless SA Speaker Leon Bignell will be tapping into Cricket Australia to see how they handle Mitch Marsh's axing. That is another story which I will touch upon in the Domestic Politics thread.

Welcome to Test cricket Beau Webster here is hoping you kill 'em.

It has always been harder to be dropped from a successful Cricket team than it is to earn you way in. When was the last time Australia rolled out 3 Debutants in a series where we were sitting top of the tree and winning the series?

Also, when was the last time we rolled out a Test team with so few NSW representatives?

For those that watch Fox/Kayo who is the old Indian cricketer who carries on at the toss like he's introducing Kane vs The Undertaker?

Ravi Shastri?
Yep - he's the go to Indian Voice on the Fox coverage. You're right about his commentating style but he's pretty balanced as far as Indian commentators go - had no problem in declaring that Jaiswal was definitely out despite the DRS snicko not conforming any contact when commenting live for example.

Marsh will be back. He'll likely ton up against SA and be declared "in form" again and welcomed back to the team with pats on the back and forehead kisses. So I hope Webster and then Green cause some more heartache for the selectors when it's time to name the Ashes squad. Would be nice to have 6 genuine bowling options.

Geez, Scott Boland is good value. In 13 tests he has taken 47 wickets at 19.53 but he is also economical, he goes for 2.84 runs an over. That is pretty good stuff. It is a pity that he did not start his Test career 10 years ago. Australia looses nothing with Scott Boland as a backup quick.

He has a 24% strike rate in his first over.

Joel Wilson should be catapulted.

Do you have a replay that clearly shows the ball rolling on the ground? Never mind, I've made my decision.

Beau Webster taking his first catch in test cricket. Buckets for hands makes him a handy add to the slip cordon.

His hands are so big he could wrap them around Justin Langer's giant gnome head.

Am I right thinking that the nature of what is deemed a catch in first class cricket involving DRS technology has been up-ended in recent years as a result of a couple of DRS decisions? Especially with no 'soft call' capacity for the on ground umpires?

That any touch of the ball on the grass, even if incidental, is likely to see decision of 'not a fair catch' by the third umpire?

Yes you are right. Up until a couple of years ago, as long as the catcher had their fingers under the ball any contact with the grass was considered incidental. I think it changed with the Starc diving catch in the Ashes that was overturned on video review. Now the catch is policed to the letter of the law.

Starc claimed the chance at fine leg when Ben Duckett toe-ended an upper cut shortly before the close of play but replays showed the ball being scraped along the turf as Starc slid around the boundary. Australia were bemused when the catch was overturned and Pat Cummins had a conversation with the on-field umpires.

"Law 33.3 clearly states that a catch is only completed when the fielder has 'complete control over the ball and his/her movement'," MCC posted on Twitter. "The ball cannot touch the ground before then. In this particular incident, Mitchell Starc, was still sliding as the ball rubbed the ground, therefore he was not in control of his movement."

Steve Smith is filthy on the decision.

And now we have the ridiculous situation where you can catch a ball that has cleared the boundary rope, throw it back into play and claim the catch. Yes it looks spectacular but it is bullshit.

Webster replacing Green, both men having a huge a wingspan, admittedly Webster looks more a 3rd slipper than gully fielder like Green, but Webster will probably field in the gully if there is only 1 or 2 slips, reminds me of Joel Garner being replaced by Roger Harper, who both had huge wingspans.

Garner and Harper effectively covered the area 2 fieldsmen would, when the ball was in the air, was just another reason why the West Indies were so dominate in both Test and ODI cricket for so long. They both took so many brilliant catches. Harper was 12th man for about 25 tests and would regularly come on as substitute fieldsman and do something brilliant in the gully.

Green has already done so in his short international career and Webster looks like he will take plenty of great catches, and probably will pinch a fair few off Steve Smith, if he remains a 3rd slipper for the fast bowlers. Smith has one of the top 5 ave catches taken per innings fielded in test cricket. That average might get a decent dent if Webster and Smith play 20 or so tests together.
