no more souvenir stumps for players unless they pay up.

Pulling a stump out of the ground in the euphoria of victory to claim as a souvenir, has been a cricket tradition for more than 50 years.

But now players will need to pay up if they want to take a memento home.

Brisbane Heat hero Spencer Johnson went to seize a stump from the middle of the SCG to remember his man-of-the-match performance by in Wednesday’s final, only to be stopped by an official in Sixers’ hat.

Johnson was told the new Zings light-up stumps cost $2500 a stump and had been hired out to Cricket NSW, with the expectation they’re returned as a full set.

The big quick graciously accepted the decree in the midst of his emotional celebrations on the field, but was so keen on acquiring the keepsake to send straight to the pool room, he asked if he could instead buy one.

Sources say cricket authorities and Johnson are now trying to work out how to do the invoicing to make sure the Heat star can – eventually and with some paperwork – get his hands on that stump.

Women’s star Megan Schutt had the exact same issue after the WBBL final, when organisers had to go and find her to ask for the stump back after she had instinctively claimed it out of the turf in the moments following the Adelaide Strikers’ triumphant victory.
Reminds me of the scene in Moneyball when the players had to pay for their soft drinks in the club. BBL is the Oakland of T20.

Sight screens. How on earth did we cope before entire bays of seats (some of the best in the house) were covered in white tarps?

Yes, it's something that has me scratching my head. The bowler begins his run in, and suddenly a batsman pulls away. Then you see he worried about someone in the third tier of the stand, or a piece of paper that's blown onto the ground square of the wicket. I would think he should be focused on the ball in the bowler's hand to the exclusion of everything else around him.

As you say, how would today's players have coped in the days of that tiny sightscreen on wheels at the MCG?

I don't think today's players would do all that well on uncovered pitches. I don't know how they'd go against bodyline bowling to bodyline fields either, but I don't think it'd be all that well.

Isn't it a good thing then that they don't have to worry about either of those things?

While it does feel like princess and the pee stuff sometimes, I'm pretty sure if you asked those who had to deal with the above if they could get a sidescreen plus white tarps behind the bowler they'd have said absolutely.

You play in the era with the conditions you're given.

Howie said on a Kayo segment that it costs $30000 per stump for the zing stumps. That's a far cry from $2500.

Timestamped video of the segment

Surely that’s the cost of the middle stump only?
oh ok, so the middle stump has 2 cameras in it.

if you didn't need the fancy cameras/branding etc, then less than $3k for a set online.
Makes a ton of sense! Thankyou both for putting the pieces together

Absolutely does not annoy me, but don't know where to put this.

Who is going to try this out at their local club on Saturday?

On a related note, I saw a woman on the train today who appeared to be taking a Duncan Fearnley 405 cricket bag to work. And that's cricket bag, not cricket bat.

Was that the Graeme Hick one?

I used to have a pair of 405 pads. When a mate of mine's Nanna died he found a World Series Cricket washbag in perfect nick. Only one I've ever seen.

That Mitchell Starc appears to wear his wedding ring on the field. Surely that has to be considered a breach of regulations?

And no I’m not suggestion anything suspicious at all I don’t think he’s dodgy or that he’s stupid enough to cheat
ICC test match playing conditions (and the laws of cricket) refer to jewellery only once, in saying that "anything that a player is wearing, including such items as spectacles or jewellery, that is not classed as external protective equipment is classed as clothing, even though he may be wearing some items of apparel, which are not visible, for protection."

Which sounds to me like it's allowed.

Absolutely not saying it’s breaking the rules it just seems odd given the crackdown on things that can be perceived as potential threats to the integrity of the ball that a ring is ok

As I said he’s the last person I think would ever do anything illegal

they usually put some tape over it, right?

I remember forgetting to take mine off once years ago and it was at a stage when I’d been on a big weight loss kick and it was very loose on my left hand. I came on to bowl and on my first delivery as I put my left arm up to lead into my action the ring flew off and ended up somewhere over near backward point

No im pretty sure he just wears it as is. It’s one of those black titanium bound ones or something
His ring is silver (the colour not the metal) as you can see it in photos when he's not playing. He puts some sort of band over it when playing which at the moment is black but I can remember it being white with black dots at one point and he's had a pink one during the SCG Tests too.

****ing pathetic that I've noticed it to be honest.

I'm pretty sure Nathan Lyon wears his while playing too but its just not as noticeable as its not his bowling hand.
