How the **** is that still a discussion when the Gabba looks like a stadium from the 80s and is increasingly losing priority from the ICC?

Queensland's premier doesn't believe Brisbane "needs another stadium," as a 100-day review into infrastructure for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games kicks off.

But David Crisafulli also would not directly answer whether the government would veto the option of a new stadium if it was recommended by the independent panel.

While Mr Crisafulli has previously spoken about "no new stadiums", the terms of reference do not explicitly rule it out.

The former Labor government had originally proposed demolishing and rebuilding the Gabba stadium ahead of the Games.

But amid growing concerns about the $2.7 billion cost, then-Premier Steven Miles ordered a 60-day review of key sporting venues headed by former lord mayor Graham Quirk.

Mr Quirk's review recommended replacing the Gabba rebuild plan with a new "greenfield" stadium at Victoria Park,
at a cost of up to $3.4 billion.

Did they not realise that hosting an Olympics might cost some money? For a city the size of Brisbane and with mining money, stressing over the cost of a new stadium seems a little bit ridiculous.

The Rain in BrisBane falls mainly on the plain. ;)
Wait til next season when they will have the day night test when the rain in likely to be more prevalent...

Well suppose this test has more chance of going into a 5th day.

Ignore all that, it was bluster because we had an election.

They'll build a new stadium at Vic Park. Gabba is pretty much end of life, and it's location makes it tricky to make a major rebuild practical.

Surely the Olympics is the perfect opportunity to build a new stadium that isn't behind every other major capital city...

Trying to one up the political achievement of Victoria killing the Commonwealth Games.

I don't know why so many people want to move to qld.
I went there for a handful of Crows games in the '10s. I was living in Canberra at the time, and there is an appeal to being able to go out at night in a T-Shirt in the middle of June.

Yeah getting out of here to qld in winter I get purely for the temps and the natural stuff they've got going on. Everything else sucks and summer time is the worst.

This might be the end for McSweeney for now, unless he makes runs in the second innings.

I can see the truly miserable winters of Melbourne or Canberra being a tipping point for some. (though midwinter Canberra has a guaranteed 90 minutes a day of perfect weather in the early afternoon). Canberra has the worst hayfever season, and an institutional and cultural denial of the existence of summer that makes it less tolerable than you would think in the warmer parts of the year.

I just read your post, flicked it on and Marnus out.
Feels like it's approaching the end for him sadly. Or at least a bit of time out of the team to reset. Technique looks a mess and batting has become a grind.

Which is a worry because he's one we were banking on with Smith and Khawaja near the end

One one of Smith or Marnus should be dropped, with McSweeney moving into his preferred middle order & Konstas opening with Khawaja.

Marnus can make his way back with form but Smith would be his career. Marnus looks in worse form.

Once again we are relying on a big innings from Head on a ground he has a poor record.

I'm curious to know what you mean by "denial of the existence of summer"? Agree with your comments about midwinter days (which are mostly sunny - albeit leading to freezingly cold nights) and hayfever.

Canberra hasn't had a decent summer in at about 5 years. The Summer of 2019/20 was the bushfire summer, when venturing outdoors was a nightmare due to the everpresent smoke. It was hot, yes, but you couldn't even go down to the coast for a swim because of the fires & smoke. 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23 were all La Nina summers, when the temperatures rarely reached 30 degrees (we had 1 "century" in total for these 3 summers combined). 2023/24 was theoretically an El Nino summer, but it behaved more like La Nina, with more cool & wet weather than normal. Today is predicted to hit 36 and tomorrow 37, so we appear to be on track for our first decent summer since 2018/19.

CA needed them to get through 15 overs to avoid having to pay full refunds. They got through 13.2. Those 10 balls which didn't get bowled are set to cost them millions of dollars.

Obviously Canberra summer is less severe than just about any other Australian city. But IMHO Canberra Summer is much less of an improvement over Brisbane Summer specifically, than Brisbane Winter is over Canberra Winter.

And it's less the heat of Canberra Summer, and more that a moderately uncomfortable high 20s day will still be 20C, 100% humidity, with no wind, at 2AM in the morning.

By "denial of the existence of summer", I mean you never get any relief from walking into public buildings/malls/libraries/cinemas/etc. like you would from the immediate blast of ice cold air-conditioning in Adelaide. In the most extreme example I mean stuff like getting on a bus on April 26th, while it's sunny and 25C, and finding the heater is on full blast because "BRRR! JUMPERS COME ON AFTER ANZAC DAY AMIRITE!"
