Konstas squeezed out perhaps?

Khawaja
Head
Labuschagne
Smith
Webster
Carey at 6
Connolly as No 7 and 3rd spin option
2 quicks + 2 spinners
Think Connolly only plays if Kuhnemann is unavailable.

#5 between McSweeney, Konstas & Inglis. I would pick McSweeney as best batsman & also useful spin option. Would open with Konstas instead of Khawaja.
.
Lyon, Starc & Kuhnemann (assuming he is fit) all play. Then it's a question of Boland v Murphy depending on conditions.

Given the description of Kuhnemann's injury, there is no way he's going to be available. It wasn't his bowling hand, but there's no way he can bat or field with an injury like that.

Agree that Kuhnemann plays ahead of Cooper if he's fit... he just won't be fit.

Webster would be our 2nd quick.
Medium.

Will come down to the wicket whether we go the extra spinner or actual quick.

With Webster able to bowl spin, along with Head, Labuschagne & potentially McSweeney... with 2 other spinners, should be enough spin options.

That's sounds like a lot of part timers, though.

I don't hate Webster opening the bowling as a possibility.

Lyon & Kuhnemann likely to bowl 60+% of the time.

Leaves the 2 quicks, Webster & part-timers for the other 40%.

Out point of difference could be our quicks in shorter bursts.

Isn't Smith injured?

So maybe we think -

Khawaja
Head
Labuschagne
McSweeney
Konstas
Webster
Carey
Starc
Kuhnemann
Lyon
Boland

Don't think that'll work.

Workload etc probably dictates we play 2 quicks
Unless it's a complete raging turner, 2 quicks, 2 main spinners & Webster, Head, Labuschagne & perhaps McSweeney would be plenty.

Not much workload for quicks on the Sri Lankan decks. If anything, Webster's ability to bowl spin as well as medium pace relieves the workload on our spinners.

There is absolutely no need to play 2 quicks on the decks in Sri Lanka - doing so only limits the number of spinners you can bowl, when it's spinners who will be doing all the work.

Which you can bet with almost certainty that it will be. At best, it will be a deck that offers less than nothing for the quicks.

Starc has an awesome record in Sri Lanka. Averages 17.

Better than Lyon who averages 32.

I would be going in with 2 quicks as they are where we have an advantage.

It's clear we have differing opinions here. I'd be going in with Starc & Webster, leaving room for an extra spinner. As a bonus, that extra spinner is likely to be Cooper Connelly, which also gives us an extra batsman.

Why, when are quicks have a better record than our spinners?

We already have enough spin options.

Lyon outside of Australia has a mediocre record - he's not a big turner of the ball, and the overspin is less effective overseas.

What?

In Aus 268 wickets at 31.08
Away 271 wickets at 29.72
